If your pet is ever injured and unable to walk, transporting them to the emergency vet can be a challenge. Here are some tips if you need to urgently and carefully move your pet to get them medical attention:

🚑 Towels, blankets, bedsheets, or pet beds can double as a pet stretcher to carry and lift your pet into the car carefully.
🚑 If you live alone and have a large dog breed, you could invest in a wheeled pet stretcher or wagon to have on hand just in case.
🚑 Injured animals are more likely to bite or claw out of fear or pain so be careful when moving your pet. For dogs, you may need to use a temporary muzzle to prevent a bite injury. For cats, it is best to approach them from behind and wrap them in a thick towel or blanket to protect yourself from biting or scratching.
🚑 Handle the injured animal as little as possible to prevent further injury to the pet or yourself.
🚑 If you are able to, call the emergency vet to alert them you are on the way so they can prepare for your arrival.

If you experience an emergency with your pet, you can call us at 512-343-2837. We're here 24/7/365 for your emergency pet care needs.

Jennifer is one of our amazing oncology patient care team members, and she LOVES her PPE! PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment, and it includes a non-absorbent gown, gloves, a respirator mask, and eyewear. These are crucial for keeping our chemo technicians and assistants safe during chemotherapy administration.

Why is PPE needed for chemotherapy administration, you ask? While chemotherapy is very safe for pets and can significantly improve their quality of life, frequent, low-dose, unprotected exposure to the same drugs can negatively impact human health over time. PPE helps limit this exposure while allowing us to provide the best treatment options for your pet!

Poor Gunner had been vomitting for about 2-3 weeks and originally seemed to get better after being given anti-nausea medication. However, soon Gunner became lethargic and developed vomiting and diarrhea. He went to see to his general practitioner with a temperature of 103.6. Then he returned a few days later for an abdominal ultrasound that revealed peritoneal effusion with a ruptured gall bladder mucocele. A cytology of the effusion revealed intracellular rods. At that point in early July, Gunner was then transferred to AVES for cholecystectomy due to septic bile peritonitis (ruptured from stones), choledochotomy to remove stone, right medial liver lobectomy due to hepatic abscess, Jackson Pratt drain placement, and an NG tube placement.

A month after recovery, Gunner's dad reached out to let our team know how Gunner was doing:

"I wanted to reach out and say Gunner is doing great and is back to his old shenanigans.

My wife and I could not be so happy to have Gunner back playing and having fun. Also, because everyone that helped out with Gunner, he got to celebrate his 8th birthday today. I have attached a few pictures of Gunner playing outside.
Thank you so much for everyone at AVES we can't say how happy we are."

We are so happy to see him doing so well!

🚨 Viewer discretion advised (contains some suggestive body language from our adorable patient! 😉) 🚨

Zira is a 5-year-old neutered male cat who recently had a bit of a rough time. He came to our AVES Emergency Department because he was struggling to urinate and had been vomiting. We quickly diagnosed him with a urethral obstruction—a serious condition where he couldn't pass urine.

Thanks to Zira’s family acting swiftly, we were able to relieve the obstruction with a urinary catheter. This condition is critical because it can lead to life-threatening kidney issues and high blood potassium levels if not treated promptly. Male cats are especially prone to this problem due to their narrow urethras, which can become blocked by clots, crystals, stones, or inflammation.

While this condition is manageable, it’s not curable, so Zira will need ongoing monitoring at home to prevent re-obstruction. Despite his ordeal, Zira was a champ during his stay with us, always rolling over for tummy rubs and soaking up all the love.

Please keep an eye on your furry friends and seek prompt veterinary care if you notice any signs of distress.

❤️Get to know our team❤️

We asked the AVES crew:
Would you rather swim in a pool or the ocean?
Pool floaties represent a pool vote, and the surf board represents an ocean vote.

Our team is almost equally divided. And now we want to hear from you: Are you a pool person, ready to chill with floaties? Or do you prefer the ocean’s waves and surfboards?

Duke loves to come see Dr. Kalis, one of AVES' Boarded Surgeons!

Duke tore his left ACL 3 years ago, and then he tore his right ACL 3 months ago, and then tore his right meniscus 2 weeks ago! Dr. Kalis has helped with the repair each time. As you can tell, Duke is a busy boy, but it is important to have limited activity over the next few weeks while he heals. Wish his mom luck!

We ❤️ you Duke!

Unfortunately, 1 in 3 pets will go missing in their lifetime and only 1 in 10 are found (AAHA). July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month and serves as a reminder to put strategies in place to keep your pet safe. Check out our best tips to prevent your pet from going missing.

If your pet does go missing, file a lost animal report with your local police department, post on community social media pages (such as Facebook or Nextdoor), check neighbors’ yards or video doorbell footage, scout local parks, and call animal shelters in your area.

Margot was brought into the AVES Emergency department because she started vomiting every time she ate and was known to get into and eat things she wasn't supposed to. Our experienced ER team performed a physical exam to better understand what was going on with Margot. They then took abdominal X-rays to look for foreign objects or materials, gave her fluids to rehydrate her, and administered an injection of anti-nausea medication. Since nothing was seen on the X-rays and all other tests were normal, it was determined that Margot most likely had gastroenteritis, which should resolve itself within 24-48 hours. She is welcome to visit us anytime!

Our ER is open 24/6/365 for all your pet emergencies.

We wanted to share some behind the scenes footage of a case we shared last week. In this video Dr. Slead is using a laser under cystoscopic guidance to ablate redundant tissue in order to move the opening of the ureter into the correct position.

Special thanks to Teeter and his parents for letting us share this footage.

Let's look at a recent Internal Medicine case with our Internist, Dr. Slead.

Teeter, a young lab, was referred to Dr. Slead for chronic urinary incontinence. Due to her age, it was thought that she was likely born with this condition, resulting in the recommendation to perform a cystoscopy for further evaluation of her urinary tract. Teeter was found to have an ectopic ureter - the most common congenital cause of incontinence in dogs.

With this condition, the ureter (tube that connects the kidney to the bladder), forms incorrectly and tunnels in the wall of the bladder and urethra, bypassing the urethral sphincter. Using a laser under cystoscopic guidance, Dr. Slead and our Internal Medicine Team were able to ablate the redundant tissue, moving the effective opening of the ureter back into the bladder and behind the urethral sphincter. Many dogs will regain complete continence after this procedure, and we are hopeful this will be the case with Teeter!

A few of AVES scrub nurses went to the Arthrex Vet Systems Orthopedic Summit in Tampa, Florida. The summit gives surgery staff members the opportunity to learn together, share best practices with peers, and discuss topics relevant to orthopedics for veterinary technicians. During didactic sessions, participants learn about joint conditions and minimally invasive treatments. During dry and wet lab sessions, participants spend quality time hands-on training to understand the principles of arthroscopy equipment and procedures, management of fluoroscopy procedures, and efficiency in fracture cases.

The AVES team was so excited to learn how to be more efficient surgery technicians to support our surgeons, as well as bring all the knowledge they acquired back to the rest of the AVES Surgery Department!
