🚨ABUSE ALERT UPDATE: A judge in San Antonio recently gave a life sentence to a man for killing a K-9 dog.

Matthew Reyes Mireles was convicted of shooting Chucky, a 5-year-old Belgian Malinois that was part of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. Authorities said that Mireles shot at officers as he led them on a chase through Karnes, Wilson, and Bexar counties. After fleeing on foot, Mireles allegedly fired several shots at officers and also at Chucky, who police deployed in an attempt to catch him. Because Mireles had nine prior felony convictions, he was sentenced as a habitual offender.

“Justice does not tolerate those who endanger others, show no respect for the lives of our citizens, and habitually commit crime after crime,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe D. Gonzales said in a statement.

It’s illegal to interfere with police service animals? According to Texas Penal Code Section 38.151, punishment ranges from a misdemeanor up to a felony in the 2nd degree. We are pleased to see Bexar County taking action to ensure justice and safety is a top priority for our law enforcement units - both man and dog.

Matthew Mireles was sentenced to three life terms, to be served concurrently.

🚨BREAKING NEWS! On April 27, 2023, the Texas Attorney General has issued a Civil Investigative Demand related to possible violations by Petland, Inc and its franchises of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices & Consumer Protection Act.

This follows other investigations by attorney generals in other states like Florida. According to the Florida complaint, the pet stores falsely claim the puppies for sale are already, or could be, registered with the American Kennel Club and make misrepresentations that puppies come from USDA breeders. This is a step in the right direction for Texas!

The Timing on this investigation is crucial as we move full steam ahead into the final weeks of the legislative session. Please continue to follow our action alerts for SB 876/HB 2238 and other Legislation we are fighting to get across the finish line! thln.org/legislative_session

Summer came early this year in Texas - We urge you to think about how the heat affects our furry companions and know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. 🚨

Remember these important tips and reminders of The Act:
⚠️ Bring your pets inside during extreme temperatures.
⚠️ Know where your pets are during the peak heat of the day. Your pet is required by law to have adequate shelter to protect them from extreme heat.
⚠️ Check on them often and frequently, and ALWAYS ensure potable water is available as required by law. Water can evaporate with rising temperatures which leaves them without proper hydration.
⚠️ Watch for local heat advisories and provide your pets with proper care.
⚠️ Take your animal on early morning or evening walks to prevent paw pad burn from scorching hot pavement.

If you see active animal abuse or outdoor dogs in your community whose level of care does NOT meet the requirements outlined in the law, PLEASE document and REPORT to your local law enforcement and animal control!

Need more information? We have resource guides available on our website at thln.org/a_brand_new_day

New York State just became the 6th state to prohibit the sale of puppy mill puppies (and cats and rabbits) in pet stores! Now the bill is off to the Governor to be signed!

Once it is signed into law, around 80 puppy-selling stores will have one year to go humane and partner with legitimate rescues and shelters. In 2020, New York stores imported more than 12,000 puppies from puppy mills in the midwest.

🚨LEGISLATION UPDATE: Today, the Dallas City Council passed the MONUMENTAL humane ordinance related to animal welfare! THLN and The Humane Society of the United States has been diligently working with the city on the ordinances to address many challenges regarding animal sheltering and animals in the field.

This ordinance will prohibit the sale of puppies and kittens in pet stores, prevent cruel breeding practices, close the puppy mill pipeline to Dallas and protect unsuspecting families from deceptive financial practices along with the other major Texas cities with this ordinance. This ordinance will support animal welfare organizations and change the landscape of animal welfare in Texas!

Texas Primary Election Day is TODAY! 🗳️ Your vote directly affects who will be on the ballot for General Elections come November. Your vote is IMPORTANT!

"We strongly believe that animal welfare issues are nonpartisan and endorse BOTH Republican and Democratic candidates who have proven they care about the welfare of Texas animals," said Stacy Sutton Kerby, Director of Government Relations for THLN. "We encourage Texas voters who care deeply about animal issues to consider our endorsements because without these advocates back in the Capitol in 2023, it will be much harder to pass animal welfare laws," finished Kerby.

Don't worry - these are endorsements in districts with contested primaries and animal champions. We'll be making endorsements in the November general election too!

Make plans to get out and VOTE today! ✔️

We are only five days away from the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act officially going into effect for the state of Texas! These images represent just one of the hundreds of similar cases across Texas.

But in just FIVE days… Texas will finally see a change as we BREAK THE CHAINS for improperly restrained, and neglected dogs. This law will define things like shelter, and standards of care - which will provide a baseline for law enforcement and animal control and allow them to step in quickly to save the lives of animals in critical situations… all thanks to .

These photos show 15 mixed pit bulls who were rescued after being found chained up and deserted in a wooded area of Grimes County. Houston Humane Society was able to step in and rescue these sweet dogs.

Thank you for all your support and helping Texas pass this necessary bill, but the animal welfare laws in Texas are far from perfect. We will continue to fight for our furry friends at the Capitol!
