Im excited to share a unique opportunity for your child to join the Riding Club of Austin IEA Dressage team for the upcoming season! A neighboring coach recently extended this invitation, and I’d love to see our talented students take advantage of it. The registration deadline is this Thursday night, so please act quickly if interested.

Signing up does *not* require your child to commit to any specific shows. Rather, it simply secures their place on the team, allowing them to participate in any competitions they choose throughout the year. This flexibility ensures your child can enjoy the benefits of being on the team without any pressure to attend a certain number of events.

Joining the IEA Dressage team brings numerous advantages for young riders. Competing at an affordable cost, riders can work toward a National level, gaining invaluable experience along the way. Participation on an IEA team also looks fantastic on college applications, enhancing students' profiles as they demonstrate commitment, discipline, and skill in equestrian sports.

The dressage training will be immensely beneficial to their jumping abilities, enhancing focus, control, and overall form. Riders often experience a boost in confidence, strengthening their mental and physical skills as they work within a supportive team environment.

This weekend’s hunter/jumper show was an absolute triumph, not just in terms of ribbons, but in personal growth and achievement. Watching our students thrive in both the ring and barn showcased their dedication, progress, and growing confidence. Their efforts during lessons, combined with previous show experiences, truly came to life this weekend. The ease and poise they displayed, both on and off their horses, were a reflection of their hard work and commitment. Seeing them build such a strong connection with their horses and carry that trust into the competition ring was a moment of pride for everyone involved. I’m incredibly grateful to witness these transformations, and I can’t wait to see where their journey takes them next!

One of our new members “Lucky🍀” practicing being introduced to ”new” scary jumps. With horses who have anxiety surrounding jumps I’ve grown to love this method of strengthening their anxiety threshold. I don’t do this exercise every ride either if there is more anxiety that I’m working with. I will have a working student warm them up in the round pen without the burden of weight on their back and without the pressure of multiple aids - just simple low pressure warmup to get their body into a state of relaxation. Then I hop on and do my flatwork. As I’m doing this I begin moving my horse around the jumps from all angles and sides. These are always jumps that were from last ride - set up exactly the same. Then we go over the jumps at a relaxed trot. the first approach I allow my horse to say “no” and encourage them to stand in front of the jump. I utilize techniques used in people with ptsd in this moment to help them process what’s in front of them then relax and breathe deep from my belly. We then turn away and reapproach this time I provide a gentle leg of encouragement through and through. Once we’re doing this without fail over and over and my horse is even wanting to pick up speed I then rearrange all the jumps and set out brush, flowers, cones, etc. all things my horse has seen by themselves but not in this drastic combo. What I’m doing is I’m intentionally pushing my horse into anxiety but only at a low level - then I stay with them all the way until they come back to baseline then we just cruise there and have a little fun. Rinse. Repeat. Understanding the limbic system of a horses brain is very identical to ours. And this is how horses are so therapeutic. As we understand our horses brain, we understand ours more too.
