SIT Service Dogs Support and Independence through Teamwork Recipients often report a greater sense of control, confidence, and independence after being partnered with a dog.

Sit (Support & Independence through Teamwork) trains and places service dogs with people who have physical disabilities. We work from an all encompassing paradigm; a service dog needs to assist their human partner not only through performing daily tasks such as turning on lights, opening doors, or retrieving dropped objects, but needs to provide a level of comfort and social support to their peop

le. Our dogs are trained assist with the daily chores that most mobility dogs perform as well as recognize/respond to withdrawn behaviors, anxiety, and episodic depression. This means more trips to the movies, out to dinner, shopping, and new adventures!

Our Fall 2024 service dog teams have GRADUATED! Congrats! I am incredibly proud of this hardworking group of committed people. From my trainers who worked more than 40 hours over 4 days (yes, I counted!), to the families who opened their minds to our words and hearts to our dogs, this has been a spectacular way to end the year for SIT. I was again reminded why I do this; to help people and dogs be at their best. And I get to be a part of it. What a lucky program director I am. I’m fairly certain my heart grew 3 sizes this week. Special thanks to Giant City Lodge and the Kelly Family, Don Taco, my staff and students, and our trainer, Sym, who helped get our vests ready. I know how lucky we are to live in a community that welcomes our clients from all over the country. We couldn’t have pulled this off without you. -Lex, SIT Program Director

Iwi (pronounced ee-wee) is a…SALUKI! Iwi means “dog” in ancient Egyptian and comes from “iwiw”- a reference to their bark. As we’re finding out with our Iwi, they’re a special breed. They’re known for being loyal, gentle, and quiet, but independent. We know this was a unique choice of breed for therapy work but after many requests, hours of research, and discussions, we’ve decided to try our hand at another atypical breed given Salukis’ ties to our community. Southern Illinois is known as Little Egyptian for a myriad of reasons dating back to 1800s- heck, we even have a Cairo (pronounced differently)! It was only fitting, then, in 1951 that SIUC opted for the Saluki as their permanent mascot. Just like Chewy, our Belgian Malinois therapy dog, we’ll be working WITH her breed traits to tackle her therapy work. We picked her specifically as her breed traits manifested in wonderful ways: for example, her independent Saluki streak has made her a very secure dog. Beyond this she seems to adore affection, from anyone and everyone 🤣. She’s also a bit of a mischievous pup- something our program director, Lex, loves in our Community Outreach Dogs. It means she’s curious, alert, and intelligent. We’ll be fostering and honing these skills over the next year! Oh…and she loves all of the dogs. Please don’t hesitate to say “hi!” if you see her out and about. And if you’re interested in having Iwi come visit at your business/class/facility, reach out!
