Early last Thursday morning we received notice of Alice who came into Miami Animal Services in critical condition. Weighing only about 11lbs, she was emaciated and needed immediate rescue help with hospitalization and veterinary care. We weren’t sure that she would make it, but we made a commitment to Alice.
Our wonderful volunteers sprang into action. They picked her up and transported her to Hollywood Animal Hospital, where we vowed to make every attempt to save Alice and give her the life she so deserved.
We were told that sweet Alice was in a severe state of starvation. She had been deprived of basic care to the point where her body was shutting down. Alice was malnourished, dehydrated and she had severe diarrhea. X-rays revealed a mass in her stomach, which thankfully moved into her colon where our amazing vets were able to remove it. Poor Alice had apparently started to digest a ropey fabric and some rubber pieces, possibly a rug or other material, to satisfy her hunger. Alice would eat anything as she was literally being starved…
Not only was Alice starving, but she also has aspiration pneumonia, double eye ulcerations, and severe chronic ear infections that were obviously untreated for some time as her ears have become hardened and leathery feeling.
Alice’s prognosis was very guarded. We all immediately began to pray and send healing energy her way as she started her road to recovery there in the emergency hospital.
During the treatment, it was also noted that Alice has evidence of multiple c-sections. The thought of poor Alice being used by an irresponsible breeder to produce puppies for sale, all the while being left to suffer in this horrific physical condition, is absolutely heartbreaking.
Alice began a refeeding schedule on an IV for 5 days in the hospital. She is gradually eating more every day. Alice is going back to the hospital on Monday for new x-rays to rule out any objects still in stomach and recheck bloodwork and protein levels. We have great hope for her recovery.
Alice is so very sweet. She loves to be held, loves head rubs and affection. We’re not certain that she’s experienced any of this before as she seems so surprised and grateful.
Alice already has an angel waiting for her to recover to make her part of their family and give her an amazing love-filled life that she so deserves.
Although we have stopped the normal intake of pugs to our rescue, we are happy to be able to still help in critical needs situations as was with Alice. We are eternally grateful for the excellent care from our veterinarians and support from all of you over the years! Thank you all! ❤️
