Dillon and I snuck in a ride on one of the nicer days last week. Boy! was he feeling a little fresh, must be that high quality Sentinel feed 😉

Here’s a bit on the extruded feed we offer and why I choose it for the big guy:

How Sentinel Equine and Specialty Nutritionist Jeanne van der Veen combined a love of math, science and animals to create a healthier horse feed.

If you ask her colleagues, they’ll say there’s no other mind in equine nutrition quite like Jeanne van der Veen.
Ask van der Veen herself, and she’ll say with a chuckle, “Nobody wants to be inside my head.”
It’s all humble admissions from the equine and specialty nutritionist at Kent Nutrition Group. Especially humble, considering van der Veen was one of the driving forces in developing Sentinel® Extruded Horse Feeds, introducing a new generation of veterinarians and horse owners to a feed form that provides the best in nutrition and digestive health.
“We developed extruded products to help improve the digestion in the horse, which then helps the horse look better, feel better, perform better,” she said. “With about 75% of the immune system located in the gut, anytime you can improve the digestive system, you’re going to see better health.”

WHAT’S EXTRUDED FEED?
Extrusion takes high-quality, finely ground ingredients and pressure cooks them with moisture into light, airy nuggets. Lighter than feed pellets, these nuggets have more volume, which encourages more chewing and slower eating.
Extrusion also allows feed to break down faster and easier, as soon as a horse takes their first bite. This releases more essential nutrients where they’re meant to be naturally absorbed in the stomach and small intestine.

MATH, SCIENCE AND A LOVE OF ANIMALS
The knowledge to develop these feeds came over a decades-long career in animal nutrition and science-based research. It started in van der Veen’s hometown of Columbia, Maryland, where, as a child, she would nurse injured animals back to health. In addition to a love for animals, van der Veen showed an aptitude for math and science.
That proved useful, earning her bachelor’s degree in animal science from Virginia Tech and her master’s degree in animal nutrition from the University of Kentucky. While she enjoyed all aspects of the work, she was particularly drawn to research and feed formulation.
“We got exposed to everything,” van der Veen said. “I just loved every part of it.”
While working on her doctorate, van der Veen took a job with Kent Nutrition Group as a ruminant nutritionist and formulation nutritionist, which briefly expanded to include equine nutritionist, specialty nutritionist and regulatory affairs manager.

DEVELOPING THE BEST IN NUTRITION AND DIGESTIVE HEALTH
Around that time, the way people thought about horse feed changed. As the industry grew and more people became involved with horses and horse care, research showed some horses may benefit from feeds that are specially formulated with certain nutrients.
From backyard hobbyists to competitive riders, they wanted feeds with high levels of fat and fiber and low levels of starch and sugar. These feeds are easier on the horse’s gut and help reduce excess starch fermentation, as well as the risk of gas-related colic, ulcers and other metabolic disorders.
Van der Veen revamped her predecessor’s two extruded formulas to meet these standards and further developed an entire line of extruded horse feeds, including the top performing “miracle feed,” Sentinel Performance LS. Today, Performance LS and Sentinel Senior continue to be the top selling and top performing horse feeds for Kent Nutrition Group.
“The whole package of extruded feed—easier breakdown, low starch and sugar, high fat and fiber—is what really helps that digestive system function the way it should throughout,” she said.

THE NUTRITIONAL RESOURCE FOR VETERINARIANS
Throughout her career, van der Veen said the biggest changes in the equine feed industry came with the rise of social media. With so much information online, it’s difficult for horse owners and veterinarians to find nutritional advice that’s backed by sound research.
This is an area where van der Veen and the Sentinel nutrition team want to be a trusted resource.
“We’re faced with incredible challenges with what people want versus what they should want, what’s real, what’s false and what’s best for the horse,” she said. “Science is a lot harder to sell than honey.”
When she’s not formulating animal feeds, van der Veen keeps herself busy with long-distance cycling, camping, backpacking and training her dog, which knows over 50 commands, including those associated with canine agility and rally. With so many titles, skills and hobbies, how does one of the most unique minds in equine nutrition keep track of everything?
“To me, it’s all math and science,” van der Veen said. “It’s all equally challenging, frustrating and rewarding.”

Experts like van der Veen, Dr. Randy Raub, Kristyn Sturken and the rest of the Sentinel team can help you make the best nutritional decisions for your horse. Sign up for the latest news, research and expert nutritional guidance for all horses.

New week, let’s make it Egg-celent‼️

I’m delivering some eggs to a colleague at the hospital today and thought it fitting to share the truth about eggs from the experts at Kent and Harvard 🧐

The truth about egg yolks 🥚

Once at the center of the egg, and now at the center of discussion, egg yolks have been quite the topic due to confusion and controversy around their nutritional value. Although eggs are a breakfast favorite, and often a staple in many people’s diets, the yolks have previously been deemed “unhealthy” largely due to their cholesterol content. Many people have been worried that eating yolks could raise blood cholesterol levels and harm heart health. However, this perception isn’t entirely accurate.
Cholesterol in eggs comes from the egg yolks, and people know that cholesterol in the blood increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. This led people to avoid cholesterol in their diet, which included egg yolks. However, research from Harvard Medical School has shown that most of the cholesterol in our body is made by our liver, it doesn’t come from the cholesterol we eat.
Egg yolks are nutrient powerhouses, offering a rich array of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and healthy fats. These golden, delicious gems are excellent sources of vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with antioxidants, protein, iron, phosphorus, choline, and selenium!
Curious about how these nutrients benefit your body? Read on:
* Overall Wellness: vitamins A, E, and K assist in a variety of immune functions, increase bone health, and protect cells from damage.
* Immune Function: vitamin D regulates immune responses and enhances the body’s ability to fight infections and diseases.
* Eye Health: lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants known to protect eyes from blue light and reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
* Muscle Growth and Repair: protein provides the necessary amino acids for muscle growth and repair.
* Bone and Teeth Health: iron helps your body make collagen which strengthens bones and prevents tooth decay. Phosphorus helps build hydroxyapatite, which is the main structural component of bones and tooth enamel.
* Brain Health and Cognitive Function:choline is a nutrient that the body uses to produce acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is a neurotransmitter for memory, learning, and mood regulation.
* Thyroid Function: selenium is incorporated into enzymes that are involved in thyroid hormone metabolism.
While egg yolks have been a topic of debate in the past, their benefits have been proven to far outweigh their cholesterol content. Eggs (and their yolks) can help you reach a nutritional, well-balanced diet. So it’s safe to say, yes, you can have your yolk and eat it too. Now, get to cracking!

Dillon is gearing up for a few cold days ahead.
Here’s a little bit on horse nutrition during the winter weather from the experts at Kent.

Winter Horse Nutrition

As temperatures drop, horses will continue to burn more calories trying to stay warm and acclimate to the weather. This is why feeding adjustments are often necessary to meet the horse’s increased energy requirements. The bulk of a horse’s diet should always consist of high-quality forage. And during winter, this forage base will be what’s keeping the horse warm as they generate heat during fiber digestion. A normal 1,000-pound horse consumes approximately 20 pounds of hay per day, but during cold weather, that same horse may need 25-30 pounds of hay per day to stay warm.
Ensuring horses are consuming enough water is also important in winter. They may not show the same level of thirst as they do in warmer months, but they still need an adequate supply of fresh water. Proper hydration is critical year-round as dehydration can lead to colic in equine. To encourage this water consumption, access to a trace mineral salt block through winter can help, as well as making sure the horse’s water source is free of ice every day and at the optimum temperature (45-65°F).
Warm bran mash can also be provided to horses during winter to increase water intake and help prevent impaction colic. Bran mash is a fluffy, low-density feed that is similar in nutritional content to oats. It’s half the density of corn or wheat and relatively high in vitamins. There are a variety of recipes for creating bran mash, most involving 4-8 cups of bran, a tablespoon of salt, and mixing warm water until the bran is well saturated. Another option is to make a mash out of the horse’s feeding by using a 100% extruded horse feed. Sentinel’s extruded horse feeds work great for this.
High-quality forage should form the basis of the horse’s diet during winter as it provides essential nutrients and helps generate body heat during digestion. Supplementing with a concentrated feed also ensures they receive the necessary nutrients to support their overall health. Feeds with higher fat content are a great choice during winter months to help maintain body condition as fat packs two times more calories per pound compared to carbohydrates and protein.
