We are grateful for all veterans for their service in protecting our freedom.
Today, consider the many ways you can support your local therapeutic riding center. Many of these centers use the healing power of horses to help veterans suffering from a variety of conditions related to their service. Most appreciate your support in the form of monetary donations, supplies, and of course, volunteer hours.

With the temperature changes that are happening this week, please monitor your equines carefully. Colic episodes are more likely to occur during periods of change and stress. As usual, make sure that plenty of water is available at all times. Please let HEC know if you notice any concerning signs of colic!

Yesterday we posted our fearless leader, Dr Bonny Henderson, riding her Connemara pony! Relatively soon after graduating from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr Bonny opened Henderson Equine Clinic. She has since earned many more certifications, including acupuncture, chiropractic, rehabilitation (CERP), and most recently, ISELP!
In addition, Dr. Henderson undertook the writing of her own book "Equine Health and Emergency Management" in order to help owners manage their horses’ health care; prepare for disasters; and prevent, triage, and manage emergency citations until the veterinarian can get on site.
She loves enjoying the Genesee Valley region with her husband, Don, and participating in the Genesee Valley Hunt.

Now that we've narrowed down the doctors, we bet you'll have no trouble identifying this lifelong equestrian! She is riding Machoughlen Lady - can you guess what breed she is?

We appreciate that our clients are very understanding of us in general, but we love this very accurate depiction of all the things that your vet is thinking of after seeing your animals! Remember to be kind to your small animal vets out there too ☺️

Yesterday's pink enchantress is today's Dr. Lauren Powell (and her trusty pony mule's name was Dusty!)
Dr. Lauren grew up in the 4-H program and remembers competing in the costume class at the Steuben County Fair fondly. Dr. Lauren loves to hike and go to farmer's markets in the area with her dog Freckles!

Throwback Team Thursday! Which of our vets is this enchantress? Bonus points if you can guess her unicorn's name.
Tune in tomorrow for the answer.

If you guessed yesterday's Team Thursday was Dr. Emily, you were correct!
Dr. Emily grew up in Connecticut and enjoyed showing in western horsemanship and trail at 4-H shows. She graduated from Cornell Vet School and completed her internship at the Equine Clinic at Oakencroft before joining the Henderson team in 2023. She spends a lot of her free time traveling and visiting family.

Tom is back in the lab to inform you of an important Coggins update! The laboratory that we use to process our routine Coggins tests will be on vacation from November 7th-December 12th, so availability of the Coggins test will be limited. We have another lab that we can use during this time for urgent needs, but if you plan to travel this winter and think your horse needs an updated Coggins before the end of December, please call ahead to schedule an appointment in the next few weeks.
Remember, New York accepts Coggins tests drawn within the past two years (ending in December of the second year). Many other states and some shows only accept Coggins tests within one year, so always check the requirements of your destination.

Everyone guessed correctly! Our throwback photo yesterday was Don Henderson, Dr Bonny's husband, who plays a lot of important roles within the Henderson Equine team!
Don grew up in the Catskills, participating in 4-H and FFA. He has some fond memories competing at the Walton Fair.
He worked for quite some time in a neuromuscular clinical and research lab at Strong in Rochester, but is now taking some time to focus on helping manage affairs at our clinic and continue to raise his Belted Galloway cows!

For our next segment of Team Thursday, we have some "throwback" photos. Can you guess which of our team members this little farmer is? Check tomorrow for the answer!

This Tom Tuesday, we want to express our condolences for the Beutler & Son Rodeo Company of Oklahoma, who lost many horses due to a feed production error. To avoid misinformation, we'll let the news outlets report the specific details as the investigation continues.
However, we know some of our clients may not have heard of monensin and are concerned about their feed, so we'd like to answer some common questions.
1. What Is Monensin?
Monensin is an ionophore, a type of coccidiostat antibiotic added to feed that is meant to selectively kill certain bacteria and protozoa. They have less restrictions than other antibiotics because they aren't relevant to human medicine.
2. Why Are Ionophores Used?
Cattle rely on a balance of bacteria and other microbes for their digestion. Ionophores maintain the appropriate balance for efficient digestion, therefore increasing health & growth rate. They are fed to chickens to reduce parasite load.
3. Why Can Cows Eat Ionophores, But Horses Can't?
Ruminants (like cows and sheep), dogs, and chickens are able to metabolize (break them down) ionophores in their liver. There is a limit to this metabolism, so feed is carefully formulated not to overdose the animals. The digestive system of horses and pigs, on the other hand, cannot metabolize or excrete the ionophores, so they build up quickly with deadly effects.
4. How Do I Prevent Ionophore-Toxicity in My Own Horses?
Although accidents happen, most of our horses aren't at a high risk for ionophore-toxicity because their feed is produced at plants with multiple quality control measures and that don't process ionophores. If you purchase grain from a plant that also manufactures cattle or poultry feed, there is a higher risk, depending on the quality control measures the plant uses.
Horse farms that also raise ruminants or poultry need to employ foolproof methods of keeping horses away from the other animal's feed, both in storage and while being fed.
5. What If My Horse Eats The Wrong Feed?
Call your vet immediately, and know what's on the feed label! These toxins act quickly and, depending on the feed contents, emergency stomach lavage is necessary.

Hey there - Tom is here to catch your attention with a special health alert!
In the last month in New York State alone, there were two reported positive cases of EEE (eastern equine encephalitis) and one reported positive WNV (West Nile Virus) case.
Let’s take a look at some similarities between the two diseases:
1. Spread by mosquitos
2. Not contagious horse-to-horse
3. Early onset clinical signs including fever, lack of appetite, and neurologic abnormalities
4. Often fatal
***5. Virtually preventable via a simple vaccination***
If your horses have not received their booster vaccines this year, or if you have a new foal that has not started its vaccine series, please call the office to make an appointment soon!
As always, happy Tom Tuesday!

Hay Coring
Did you know you can find out exactly what you're feeding your horse by sending a sample in for analysis?
Next time we're heading to your barn, let us know that you're interested in a hay sample so we can bring our hay coring tool. The sample gets analyzed by Cargill, and then we can use the report to guide a nutrition consult with you to see if there are any changes you should be making to meet your horse's specific needs.
