Happy Tom Tuesday!
Tom and Butternut are staying hydrated this cold season - are your horses? In the winter, your horses are less likely to drink water because of the colder weather and (in some cases) ice in the buckets. Decreased water intake can increase chances of an impaction colic, which can sometimes be life-threatening!
Increase your horse's water intake this winter by keeping their buckets thawed and by providing extra electrolytes in their feed.

Tom has been busy checking our stock of dewormers! Now that we've had a few good "killing" frosts, it's a great time to do your fall f***l egg count and deworming regimen.
Did you know horses within the same herd can have very different parasite loads? Drop by the clinic with a sealed and labeled f***l sample (one fresh f***l ball will suffice)to check your horse's worm burden and receive a veterinarian's recommendation for a deworming protocol.

Other management practices that will help reduce parasite burden during the winter include :
- Limit pasture overstocking / overgrazing to minimize f***l contamination.
- Remove manure from pastures and paddocks at least twice a week.
- Harrow pasture and turn out areas regularly during the coldest weather. This breaks up manure exposing parasite eggs and larvae to killing sunlight or freezing temperatures.
- Provide plenty of clean water to limit drinking ground water.

Happy Tom Tuesday, and Happy Deworming!

It may be Black Friday, but that doesn't mean your barn has to be dark! Remember - if you want a February-April 2026 foal, you will need to begin turning lights on in your mare's stall now. The recommendation is 16 hours of "daylight" and 8 hours of darkness.

This is also a good time to consider a nutrition consult or a chiropractic/acupuncture evaluation for your future broodmares to boost fertility!

Too soon to pull out your Christmas lights? Maybe!
Too soon for preparing to put your mare under lights? Not at all!

It takes about 2-3 months of artificial light exposure to stimulate ovulation, so if you're considering breeding your mare early next year (before April), you should begin putting her under artificial lights December 1st.
See Colorado State's article for specific lighting requirements.
https://vetmedbiosci.colostate.edu/erl/2022/12/13/putting-a-mare-under-lights/

It's also a great time to re-evaluate your mare's nutritional program and body condition. Good nutrition is important in improving fertility.

If your mare struggles with low fertility, consider an acupuncture treatment regimen with Dr Bonny to give her a boost this year!

We are grateful for all veterans for their service in protecting our freedom.

Today, consider the many ways you can support your local therapeutic riding center. Many of these centers use the healing power of horses to help veterans suffering from a variety of conditions related to their service. Most appreciate your support in the form of monetary donations, supplies, and of course, volunteer hours.
