Milky muzzle Monday! Just as soon as the foals arrive at LCC they need to learn to drink from a bucket and they need to learn NOW. It has been several hours since they've gotten their last drink from mom and they don't know how to drink from a bucket. They are tired, hungry, frightened and confused. The buckets and bowls come out immediately, Victoria and staff start gently getting each foal to drink one by one. All the while they are monitoring who is drinking, peeing, p**ping, the color of the poo, (if it's yellow we call that "sunshine p**p" it means that they've gotten colostrum) and looking for any injuries or conditions that may need to be addressed. Some foals will pick up on drinking quickly, some it takes some time and a lot of effort to get them drinking on their own. Getting that first drink into them is crucial but not always the end of the education, just because a foal starts drinking on their own it doesn't necessarily mean that they get it, many times they forget and you need to start all over, again and again. Others have major issues and will require tube feeding to survive. This particular foal is one of those that although he got it, is just a little over zealous and put his whole face into the bucket this is another thing we watch for, and pull their faces up so that they don't aspirate milk. But he sure is cute.
So now your all going to ask: "Why do you use buckets and not bottles?" Well, it is for several reasons. Free will feeding from a bucket is more natural, it is how they would feed if they were with mom. Bottle feeding is labor intensive, especially when you got a couple dozen foals to feed around the clock. Bottle feeding conditions foals to associate people with food and you become mom, mom is much better at weaning than we humans. Foals that bottle feed tend to become very mouthy, needy and disrespectful of your space, behaviors that then need to be corrected. Cute when they are little but getting butted and bitten by a weanling, not so cute. Bucket feeding is a once and done necessary life skill. Only on occasion with preemies we will use a bottle temporarily.
