How to Desensitize Your Dog to Fireworks or Loud Noises
Sound Desensitization 101:
Helping your dog feel calm around fireworks takes time and patience — but it is possible. Here’s how to start:
🔉 Start with Low Volume
Play recordings of fireworks or bangs at a very low level, ideally in a separate room or from a distance. The goal is to keep your dog under their fear threshold — calm and curious, not panicked.
🍖 Pair Sounds with Positive Reinforcement
While the sounds play, reward your dog with high-value treats, a favorite toy, or a chew. You’re creating a positive association with the noise.
🔊 Gradually Increase Volume
Once your dog is consistently relaxed at the current level, slowly raise the volume over time. Never rush this step — go at your dog’s pace.
⏱️ Keep Sessions Short & Consistent
Multiple short sessions each day (5–10 minutes) work better than occasional long ones. Consistency is key to lasting results.
✅ Always End on a Positive Note
Finish every session while your dog is still calm. Ending on a win helps build confidence and trust.
⸻
✨ This process takes time — often weeks or even months — but it’s worth it. Go slow, stay positive, and don’t be discouraged by setbacks. You’re helping your dog build lifelong resilience. 💛
