🌼 Happy first day of spring! Today is the vernal equinox, when daylight and night are perfectly equal and astronomical spring officially begins. We’ve been enjoying the sunshine and mild weather, and the plants are coming to life too. Whether it’s puppies digging up bulbs or cats nibbling on leaves, our ER sees a variety of toxic plant cases every year - and knowing which ones may be dangerous can be key to keeping your pets safe.

There are many more toxic plants besides the ones pictured here – we recommend checking the ASPCA Poison Control website at https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants for information on specific plants, and what signs you should look out for. If you suspect your pet has ingested a harmful plant, contact poison control for recommendations on how to proceed.

When you adopt a cat or kitten it’s crucial to remember the 3/3/3 guidelines for settling in. For some cats they may come home and be right in your lap, others you may wait for that for weeks or months. For shy cats sometimes it’s even longer!

You see your cat who you saw at the shelter was familiar with that environment, that routine, those resources and the people who visited them. They now are in a conpeletely new place, with new smells, new layout, new people in which they need to ensure is safe before they can even maneuver to finding resources. Once that is done, then they consider seeking familiar faces out.

This is where having your cat come home to a specific room for the first few days can be helpful. They learn a much smaller environment and gain confidence as they learn that space is safe and the people come and go with love. Don’t rush that introduction to the rest of the house, the dog and especially not the other cat. It can wait…trust us….its often better that way.
Please! Give your cat time to adjust and learn a new life before giving up.

Next week is Valentine’s Day and the U.S. alone is estimated to spend over $2 billion on flowers, many of which can be seriously toxic to our cats and dogs. Before you buy that beautiful bouquet for someone with pets, stop and check that you’re not accidentally gifting them something dangerous – their pets will thank you for it!

Also as of right now, we are still closed on Saturdays. The doctors and we as a staff are enjoying it while we can! It is undetermined when we will be opening again on Saturdays but we are trying to compensate by taking as many of you as we can during the weekdays!
