Our breeding dogs were all tested negative for MDR1, but older breeding dogs may have been positive before the testing was available.
I’m sharing our story so you can do research about the flea/heartworm prevention for Aussies. Our Australian Shepherd Jazz passed away Saturday night after a battle from Simperica Trio poisoning. It was very traumatic for us. It was not peaceful, he suffered. He died in my husbands arms 😔. He was only 2 years old. I realized after his second to the last dose of Simperica Trio he looked like he was having trouble seeing his bowl but I just didn’t think much of it at the time. After the last dose he completely lost his vision. Soon after he developed tremors and ataxia. 50% of Australian Shepherds have MDR1. I didn’t know Simperica Trio would have this effect on them and I trusted what the vet gave me was safe. Only 1% of adverse reactions are reported with this medication. Their blood brain barrier is different than other dogs and they can’t process medications the same. I found Dr. Judy Morgan on You Tube when I was trying to research how to detox him after getting nowhere with the regular vet. She has a great video about these medications and I appreciate her transparency. That’s when I went down a rabbit hole of researching information about the mdr1 and these preventive medications. We were just too late. The damage had been done. I had an appointment with a holistic vet but he didn’t make it. Please!!!!!! Take the time to do the research! If I were to do this over I would’ve taken him to a holistic vet in the beginning. You can potentially space out vaccines and get alternative treatment that is safe. If this reaches even one person who was like me and didn’t fully understand the mdr1 gene and the effect Simperica Trio could have on them then I’m happy to share our story. I wish I would’ve known. Jazz was the sweetest soul and didn’t deserve what happened to him.
