I love these rock crunchers ❀️ This mare's paddock is a great mix of gravel, sand, and soft grass. She's got excellent hooves and is sound on any surface. I always encourage owners to mix up the footing in pastures to help grow strong hooves and happy mounts 🐎

My horses AND donkeys will remain on their track system, eating their low sugar forage, watching that grass grow from their side of the fence. All it takes is one time on that sugar rich grass and your equine's hooves can fall apart. It only takes 20-72 hours for a laminitic episode to set in after a trigger event. Don't gamble with months and months of pain, rehabilitation, and vet/farrier bills for a picturesque view of your baby eating that fresh green grass ❀️

I keep my clients adult donkeys on a 10-12 week schedule but the babies are on a 5-6 week. The babies grow so rapidly that the toe can really get away from us, causing them to rock back and crush heels, straining tendons and ligaments. Growing fast while out of bony alignment is not good for these little turds! A shorter trimming cycle helps keep that toe under control, giving the rear structures of the hoof (bars, frog, heels, and the digital cushion) a chance to catch up and keep everything aligned. πŸ’ͺ

A fresh set for this little man πŸ’…
He's very sensitive to sugar and it shows in his hooves and behavior. The owner has tweaked his diet (no more grain folks!!!) and he's feeling so much better. He went from hobbling around the pasture and laying down all the time to sprinting away when you approach with the halter 🀣 I'm happy to see him so comfortable on his own feet!

I got myself a new toy 😁 DEWALT
This thing makes quick, precise work of tough summer feet. That means less time standing on three legs, less time bent over for me, so it's a win win all around! I can also get the job done one handed for those oldies who don't appreciate having their legs pulled laterally for me to hold their hoof between my knees. This also works great for minis who usually have the same issue. Faster trims = less time in this hot weather too 😁

Another day another donkey! I loved working with this boy today. He was very happy with the results 😊 His front hooves will take months to grow out the way we want them to and I couldn't make them look perfect but they look and feel so much better!

Yesterday was a donkey day! πŸ₯°
These two ladies were badly overgrown and I was happy to help. The owners told me they'd been refused by several trimmers because the donkeys weren't halter broke. It did take some extra time to get them haltered, but it was worth it for these results! They stood really well for me and are feeling much better now 😊

I made this sweet little Jenny so much more comfortable today! I'm not sure if she'd ever seen a farrier before, but we got through it. I'll see her again in six weeks and I hope to see a TON of improvement on the movement in her hind legs as she re-learns how to walk normally ❀️

Sam's owner reached out to me because his previous farrier had stopped returning his calls. He mentioned they had tied his legs up in the past and it seemed like it was going to be a real rodeo πŸ˜‚ after ten minutes of convincing him to get the halter on, Sam really surprised me. He stood better than the majority of my clients animals! I was expecting to do a lot of training and restructuring his mind today. What I did see in him was a lot of anticipating and some pain response. He was expecting force from me but with quiet, calm communication (and treats of course!) we had an excellent visit today.

Today I got to work with Henry, an ex roping horse 🀠 Henry's feet were rock hard and at a glance might look okay. His owner told me he was painful on hard surfaces but generally worked in sand. I could see his bars we're laying over his sole ~ I imagine it feels like you put a small chunk of plywood in your shoe and then had to walk on it all day. Ouch! After removing the excess tissue I could see Henry was relieved and much more comfortable with lots of licking and chewing. Bars should be level with the sole, as they are a weight SHARING structure, like everything else on the bottom of the hoof. Thank you April for letting me work with Henry!
