For those goat folk out there following our Johnes experience, I reached out to Dr Michael Collins from Johnes.org and asked him a few questions. I Screenshot both emails, mine and his. GOAT FOLK need to start PCRing once a year. It is so worth it for you and your clients. This email brought me much needed comfort and may help ease people's minds since there isn't a ton of information on this disease.

I should add that we are planning to stay the course originally planned for now. Testing the whole herd via PCR, several does will be under a year yet but I think it will make people more comfortable. We will likely retest in 4-5 months. Most people picked up their goats in 2023 close to her last negative test so I am pretty comfortable saying exposure to their kids was minimal. I will still be bottling kids from this season because my barn was Octavia's ground zero and it has been deep cleaned but just for safety sake. Let me know if you have any questions for me ❤

Finally got the rest of the results back for the Adults. CAE free thankfully. I wouldn't recommend the U of M for testing though. It wasn't the Johne's positive which just sucks but it has been a struggle the whole time. When I first submitted my samples, I had called ahead with the tests I wants and number of samples. I also emailed and not to mention the actual submission form. They still forgot to add the Johne's Serum test until I called again saying I couldn't see it on my account. After that they had run out of CAE kits so my CAE results took 12 says extra to be processed. Ugh.

01/17/2024

So I knew from the beginning that I was going to make a public post about this but wanted to wait until I had all of the information back in my hands before jumping the gun. Either way there was going to be a post but I didn't want people reading one and missing the other if split up. I do very much realize that this post will make me very unpopular for quick a while in the goat community, but I believe in being honest.

In March 2023 there was a local Johnes scare and many of us ran F***l PCRs on our herds in a panic. Our results came back clean and life was good. I annually test my goats for Johnes and CAE via blood and this last March did F***l PCR's as well. We have always had Negatives for both. Last week I sent in our blood for our annual testing. Thursday night I had gotten home from work at 2 am and thought I'd grab a snack and some tea and peak to see if our results had come back yet.... Indeed the Johne's Elisa had. 13 Negative and One Positive. My heart in that moment exploded. In the 2-3 weeks before this I did have one goat who had recently started to lose weight rather rapidly and I was like please don't be that goat...Sure enough. It was Islands Edge AL Octavia 1*M/1*D VEEE 90.

Octavia came to the farm October 2022. She had tested negative with the rest of the herd in March 2023 and had been fat and happy up until 2-3 weeks before she was euthanized. She never once had Diarrhea, they don't have to to shed the virus although I do feel fortunate that she wasn't spraying infected f***s EVERYWHERE but still. She was shedding "Moderately" when this PCR was run. I did not sell kids from her this year. I have both of her daughters here and they too will be euthanized but I need to collect samples before I do so. When Octavia was euthanized, she was just a healthy weight, but getting close to "thin". I am also fortunate that she really only ever resided in my main paddock. All of the does have been moved to the doeling paddock. The barn was flipped with the help of wonderful friends who also brought heaters and amazing sanitization along with them. We spent ALL DAY out in the barn. -11 outside mucking our hearts out. Luckily, I have been mucking the barn every 2-3 weeks all the way to the dirt floor before adding new bedding so it was only like 30 otter sled loads. Sprayed Virkon everywhere, soaked feed dishes in it and tools. Put down a thick layer of Lime as it supposedly makes it a little less hospitable for the disease to linger in. I brought in tools, pitchforks, shovels, stock tanks, feed dishes, my boots and just abut everything I could think of and bleached it with 50% bleach water mixture. The main paddock is closed off now.

I'm sure I am repeating things at this point but I feel like this week has been an eternity. Our next steps will be to test her 2 daughters both blood and fecals. Then next will be the whole herd getting fecals done ASAP. Many of my young stock are too young to test via blood yet and be accurate so I may wait to do their blood tests till after kidding is over for the most part. No one will be leaving this year unless they are going for butcher. I have 30ish pregnant does currently. I don't even know what to think. I felt like a hoarder before and had these plans to cut way back and hit the shows like crazy this summer. Not anymore. If more positives start popping up this will likely be the end for us. But where would all these goats go? It's a mess. Even when You do everything right this can happen. I am sharing this so that folks will test more often and not just blood tests but fecals as well. Octavia would have been turning 4 this Spring. She was fat and happy and sweet.

I should say that False positives with Blood for Johnes is fairly common and has she only had the positive blood test I likely would have just quarantined her. But having she had lost weight drastically enough for me to notice it. I wasn't going to chance it. The timeline went like so: I found a picture I'd taken of her from December 6th, she was fat and happy and looked nice! I took a video because I was concerned about her weight loss on Jan 4th. We sent our blood that weekend. I got home from work Thursday morning around 2 am on the 11th and saw the Single positive test. We collected fecals and euthanized her Thursday morning before I went to work. This afternoon (really yesterday because I'm writing this at 3am like a weirdo) around 5pm we got confirmation that her fecals were indeed positive for Johnes Disease.

Right now, any advice is welcome. There is so little information out there and much of it is speculative because most people that experience this disease cull the animal and say nothing of it to anyone. I feel this is so wrong and very possibly why it happened to our herd. Pointing the finger won't help. It won't bring Octavia back or save her daughters. It won't bring back a sense of security to me or people who have bought goats from me in the last year. I don't know that people will buy goats from me again after this. We did everything right and still. If I was on the outside looking in, I wouldn't buy from us. Why submit a herd to that kind of risk??

I have so much to do in the coming couple of days, then after than prepping for kidding season. I should be excited. I am now starting to see my coming FF udders coming in and they are looking lovely but I also think "I might have to shoot this goat". So many thoughts and feelings right now. I know many will have questions and comments. I have started reaching out to folks that have purchased goats from us this last Summer and plan to spend the better portion of today, when I wake up reaching out to more. Please be patient as it's been very hectic, and I want to thank everyone I have been talking to for the support that they have given.

A little bit about us and our goats. When I say us, I mean the goats and I. I also mean supportive best friends that come to the rescue more than they should have to during kidding season. This coming kidding season will be the heaviest most labor-intensive kidding season we have head yet and will hopefully be less and less after this season.

This year I retained multiple kids from my oldest lines and not that they were super old but they are lines I can't replace until I know how they turn out. Spring 2023 was the last kidding for a couple of our foundation goats. Shere Country SH Aria 1*M/1*D VEEE 90 is retired at the ripe age of 13 going on 14. She kidded with Triplet doelings this last year, all of which reside here. Also, Spring 2023 was Shere Country X Pirate's last kid crop. I retained a ton of his progeny and will have to be pretty selective once everyone starts uddering up. I will try to keep on top of posting updates as much as possible. Many does will be coming up for sale this year and if you have any interest in any particular doe(s) let me know in advance so if I decide to let that do go you will be on the list to notify. I am planning to only keep one doeling from each of the 2023 litters and even if once was selected from each litter I will still have to slim down from there going to Fall.

Another reason I would like to slim down is I currently and have only ever milked by hand. It is catching up with me. I would like to eventually purchase a 2-goat system at some point but right now it is not an option. I am an ADGA Plus member, I have been participating in DHIR for a few years now and will continue to do so. I will have 30ish does freshening this year so please bare with me on pictures and frequency of testing. I usually try to space my tests at least 40 days apart to keep it manageable.

We will also be hosting Linear Appraisal's this year if we are selected. We have been a host herd twice now; it is a wonderful experience. Knowing that the last posted Linear Appraisals were 2021, I have added them to each of the goats' pages that have had a session done with them so that people can better make purchase decisions. Also, each of our does have their DHIR records posted on their page, a collective board on the "Does" page to compare them all.

I am hoping to get our annual Johnes and CAE testing done very soon as well. We last had the herd done with UBRL using Blood for CAE and Johnes, October 2022. Also, fecals for Johne's were done this last March of 2023. All negative, those results are and have always been posted on our site.

Soon begins the countdown to kidding season and the watch for those adorable and hopefully very promising first freshening udders. The temptation to trim them up for better scrutiny is almost unbearable especially with the weather we have been having. The reality is that we won't continue to have this weather. Northern MN is brutal. Very very often starting in the next few weeks, stretching into late March we have temperatures averaging in the negative double digits. We begin kidding about February 20th and it will be nuts, I believe in the first 9 days we have 21 does due... So please be patient and for all my fellow goat breeders, I wish you a "PINK" season to come with little to no horrors of the lifestyle
