Incubating your own eggs is important for homesteaders for the following reasons:
1. Allows you to raise choose your breed, raise your own chicks, and increase your flock free from the expense of purchasing from an outside source.
2. Your are able to improve your flock by hatching eggs from birds in your flock who possess the traits that you want (i.e. egg production, disease resistance, color, appearance, meat quality, etc.).
3. Control over when you get birds. Timing the hatch allows you to plan the replenishment of your flock so that you do not lose out on egg production or when you will need to harvest meat.
You will be able to reduce the risk of disease and parasites entering your flock. This will ensure that your flock stays healthy.
Which Homesteading/Farming skills do you feel are important to have?
Sewing is important for several reasons:
1. Knowing how to sew allows you to repair clothing, make new clothing to fit you and make other necessary fabric items (curtains, cushions, bedding, etc.)
2. Making or repairing your own clothes is cost-effective.
3. Sewing allows you the opportunity repurpose old clothes or fabrics reducing waste and promoting sustainable practices.
Having even basic sewing skills can be invaluable during emergencies or natural disasters when there may not be access purchasing new clothing.

Have you considered raising pigs on your homestead? I am a person who does research first. Then I try raising an animal for a year to see if I like them and if they are a good fit for our homestead. I can tell you from experience that IPPs (Idaho Pasture Pigs) are the way to go! They are gentle and friendly. I am able to get in the pen with my 400lb boar and feel perfectly safe. When my sows gave birth, I was right beside each one as the babies came out. We currently have a breeding trio. The sows are great moms and are very gentle lying down. No squished piglets here! They are food motivated, so moving them is easy. They simply follow the food bucket. They are very tasty and nutritious. They are a guaranteed protein source on your homestead. It takes less time to grow out an IPP than a steer. All of your favorite cuts are there, including BACON! Ask me any questions that you may have about this wonderful breed. We currently have boars, female breeders, and male feeders available. We are located in Bailey, NC. PM us for any information. #pigs #homesteading #homesteadinglife #growyourownfood #freshprotein #idahopasturepigs #ipppigs #gilts #sows #breederpigs #feederpigs #selfsufficiency #backyardpigs #protiensource #selfsufficientliving #livingtheirbestlife #pigsofinstagram #homesteadersofinstagram #homesteadinginnc
