It's mushroom season!
The recent rain and warm temperatures have brought forth a record wild mushroom crop. While most of the mushrooms in our area aren't deadly poisonous they can cause moderate to severe GI signs and liver damage. Symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness and collapse. They often come on quickly and require immediate medical attention.
The best prevention is to limit access.
In your yard mushrooms grow on compost piles, in decorative bark landscaping and under shrubs and low trees. Check your yard daily and remove any new mushrooms before they produce spores.
Keep your pet on a leash when walking in woods or fields. Monitor their activity closely, dogs can swallow a mushroom before you even have a chance to see and prevent it.
Puppies and young dogs are more likely to eat mushrooms although we can see this behaviour in older dogs too.
Mushroom season will end with the first hard frost. Keep a sharp eye out and keep your dog safe.
