🐾 🐾 Training tip of the day - Part 2 - Loose Dogs 🐾 🐾

Most dogs will stop in their tracks when you tell them to go home. They will look at you and then turn around and leave.

If your dog is attacked do not pull the dog from the other dogs mouth. By pulling your dog out of the attacking dogs mouth it will actually cause the aggressive dog to bite down harder and continue to pursue.

Take a leash or a belt. Wrap it around the aggressive dogs neck and lift up. It will cut the air from the attacking dog forcing them to release your dog. Don't let go. If you do the attacking dog will turn on you. Call for help.

Hitting the dog with sticks or rocks will only annoy the attacking dog and cause it to retaliate towards you.

If the dog bites you, don't pull your limb from its mouth. Push into the dog. They will not expect this and will most likely back up.

If this is helpful let me know. I will share more loose dog tips.

🐾 🐾 Training Tip of the Day -- Part 1
Loose Dogs 🐾 🐾

When walking your dog and a loose dog approaches, have a plan in place. Think ahead.

In LaGrande, this happened today on a training walk with a client.

Position your dog behind you, take a step forward towards the advancing dog, get big and loud, and yell at the approaching dog to "Go Home!" while pointing in the direction the dog came from.

Avoid running away, as this can trigger the dog's chase instinct. Screaming can also provoke prey drive in the dog.

Consider carrying an air horn, whistle, or other such devices.

But most of all having a plan is crucial!

**update Neesha is young and approximately 1 year old**

Meet Neesha!
Neesha is a wonderful girl - a very quiet, kind soul. She is a large mixed breed - maybe with some St. Bernard or Mastiff in there! She's currently in a foster home where it's reported she loves the creature comforts of the indoors and spends a lot of time sleeping. When she's outside, she enjoys sniffing around the yard and snacking on snow. She's housebroken, dog friendly, people friendly, and has shown very little interest in cats at this time. She's getting lots of practice riding in the car and with training commands, and the foster also reports she is obedient and learns well with food rewards and enjoys chewing on appropriate toys and bones. This sweet girl is a gentle giant who deserves the best life has to offer!

I am looking for several really reliable dog foster homes for Best Friends of Baker, Inc. When a dog comes up that needs placement it is sudden and instead of being behind scrambling for a foster. I would like to be ahead of it. So please fill out the form if you are interested.

We need homes of all different shapes and sizes, kids, no kids, cats, no cats, dogs, no dogs, etc. Then when a dog that could potentially be a fit for you comes a long we can give you a call.

I am now helping with this process so if you do not hear back from one of the volunteers at Best Friends, PLEASE contact me.

FOSTER FOUND!
This sweet girl ended up at impound and has not been claimed. The staff reports that she just flops into your lap for all the loves and belly rubs. She doesn’t seem to notice the cats at the clinic, she just wants snuggles. She would love to get out of there .

I have been asked by so many people that if another TRIPOD dog comes along to please tell them. Well here you go! This is Rupert.

Rupert is a sweet, loving dog. Currently lives with dogs and cats. Unknown on children. Has been working on basic obedience and listens well. He can navigate stairs but does need help getting in and out of vehicles. I have met and worked with this guy a couple of times. He is a total sweetheart and deserves the best home. Available for adoption through Best Friends of Baker, Inc.

Holly is a happy, healthy, recently-spayed, incredibly sweet girl. Age is unknown, but we think she's 4-5 years. She's playful at times, but lives for cuddling with her favorite people in bed or on the couch. Like a true lab, Holly also enjoys playing fetch! She adores children and will make a perfect family companion.

Available for adoption through Best Friends of Baker, Inc.

So...I'm not a photographer, I'm a dog trainer but I just wanted to highlight this special dog and her handler. These two have been working hard and it is amazing to watch what they have been working on come together. There is something inspiring about watching a service dog team making progress and bonding. I personally know what it feels like to have a service dog open up my world and give me my independence back. So I'm proud of these two. Thank you for letting me be part of your journey!

Training tip of the day. 4 on the floor.

If you have small dogs train them like they are the size of German Shepherds. Don't carry them around. They will be more independent, less reactive, and all around better dogs. Remember, they don't know they are small. In a Pomeranian's mind it can stand up to a lion.

***LOST*** Blaze disappeared from Coyote Peak off Haines Dump Rd. between 3:00-3:30 today. He belongs to me—the Best Friends page admin writing this post. Blaze is unfortunately not wearing an ID tag because he’s very elderly and the collar irritates him. He’s hardly mobile, anyway, so he’s not at risk of taking off. He comes on outings for mental stimulation while I take my kids sledding very nearby. Blaze just hangs out near the car, sniffing for bones and rolling in the snow. He’s about 15 years old and overweight; he’s physically incapable of going far, and I was never more than 200 yards away. We’ve done this many times in the past. Eight people and three dogs have already searched a perimeter vastly wider than he’s capable of walking, and a kind passer-by is currently searching with a drone powered camera and spotlight. I left the area just to post this and get some warmer gear, then I’m headed back to search the area until he’s found. Dispatch has not received any reports, and I can’t imagine anyone could have picked him up without me noticing. If you see or hear anything please call or text 703-376-7997 or the Best Friends phone 541-519-7387 immediately.
