From fellow breeder❤️

This is going to sound like a real downer, especially since it is the first day of a new year, but I want people to understand that this is what a responsible breeder goes through when people we have trusted enough to sell a puppy to breaks their word and quite often a contract by trying to place/sell a dog they can no longer keep for whatever reason to someone instead of contacting their breeder. A breeder friend recently found out one of her clients was no longer able to keep their 8-month-old Golden Retriever puppy and instead of contacting the breeder, the owner placed an "ad" on FB to find a home for the puppy. Unfortunately, the puppy was placed before the breeder found out about the "ad". When the breeder called the original people who bought the puppy from her (they had signed a contract that required the puppy come back to her if they could not keep the dog regardless of age), the breeder was basically told to go to hell. The original buyer refused to give the breeder any information other than "the dog is safe". Needless to say, the breeder was distressed and devastated. She had several sleepless nights as she tried to find out where the dog was. This was a boy she bought into the world, raised it for 8 weeks and then entrusted it into the hands of a family she thought would love it and care for it as much as she did. She assumed that the buyers would be good to their word and honor the contract that they readily signed when they got the puppy at 8 weeks of age. Instead, these people betrayed the breeder's trust and failed to live up to their agreement, leaving the breeder brokenhearted, bewildered and concerned for the puppy she brought into the world. Responsible breeders do NOT write their contracts without a lot of thought put into these agreements. Responsible breeders are ALWAYS thinking about what is in the BEST interest of the dog throughout its lifetime and write their contracts with this in mind. Responsible breeders select their buyers with care and pray that our assessment of our buyers is correct. It destroys our faith in ourselves and in our fellow human beings when we are wrong in our judgement and find out that the buyer, we trusted with our precious puppy with has betrayed our trust. Responsible breeders KNOW that there will be circumstances where a family will NOT be able to keep the dog because life threw them an unexpected curve ball such as a devastating illness, which is why they require the dog be returned to them if the buyer is unable to keep the puppy its entire lifespan. PLEASE put yourself in the position of your dog's breeder the next time, you or a friend of yours must make the decision to place/sell a dog and contact them first. If you truly care about the animal in your house that you can no longer keep then PLEASE contact the breeder, I promise you the breeder, if they are responsible, will NOT judge you but rather be thankful that you are true to your word and will allow them to get back "their" puppy. Responsible breeders have better resources than the average pet owner when it comes to finding a forever home for an animal and generally speaking will not be pressed into placing the animal into the first situation that comes along. Responsible breeders KNOW that social media is a "seller beware" situation when it comes to finding a great home for a pet. I am happy to report that there is a happy ending to the story that started my lecture, in that after much effort put into finding where the 8-month-old puppy was placed by the breeder and the entire Golden Retriever community, the dog was found and once the new owners were told the whole story, they were willing to return the dog to the breeder. I KNOW the breeder is extremely thankful. So, with this I will get off my soapbox with the simple request that if you can't keep a dog or have a friend trying to place a pet or see someone advertising a dog online: REMEMBER, PLEASE CONTACT THE BREEDER FIRST AND FOREMOST.

As breeders we hear this all the time: do you breed show dogs or do you breed the other kind. I don't want a show dog I just want a pet. Or I want a dark one or a light one

Today a golden breeder posted she was asked this question by a potential buyer. Here is how I respond to these questions when I've been asked similar.
🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴🦴

I hate when I hear "outsiders" and some insiders divide our breed up in this way. I hate that outsiders can see what insiders cannot. Every one of us should look at a golden as just that. The venue we choose to enjoy is within us. Its not the breed. A golden should be able to go from conformation to performance to field and back never missing a beat as far as appearance. Their levels of ability purely lie within our own unlimited or limited abilities both physically and financially. When I am asked this same question I say I breed for whatever game you wish to play or not play. It's up to you and your circumstances on how well and how far you go in that game. A friend who got her first golden from me was an obedience person. At a show she was asked who she got her boy from. When she noted ny kennel the person gasped and said but she is a show kennel. My friend responded, no, that's what she enjoys doing. She breeds for an all around golden that fits the standard. BTW. Her golden boy never made it in the ring but was never out of the ribbons in obedience clear through his UDX and at age 10 earned a perfect score of 200! Pretty good for a "show" golden. Another breeder had one of my dogs and he outdid the "field breds" in marking ability only having to be shown once to their 2 or 3 times. Pretty good for a "show" golden. And another had titles on both ends including WC, TD, and CDX plus others. And yet another hunted grouse all his life. Pretty good for a "show" golden.

Once more I caution pigeon holing breeders and programs as is done. You might just find your next FCH or CH or OTCH etc where you least expect it. Think outside the box. Stop being stuck in that box. That's goes for breeding as well. Breed for the breed and the standard and the game you want to play be it one or all will be found.
