As most of you know, our organization is now operating in both Texas and California. We need fosters in both the San Antonio, Texas area and the Kern County, Bakersfield area. We were so proud of the number of animals we were able to save with our limited resources as a new rescue last year but those numbers now look minuscule compared to the number of pleas for help we receive. Don't be a part of the problem, be a part of the solution!
1) I could list the many reasons for spay/neuter but honestly it deserves its own post. For now i will just say that hundreds of dogs are euthanized in our county every month. We do not need to add to that problem with more puppies.
2) Making sure your dog is microchipped, vaccinated, spayed/neutered is a great start to being a responsible pet owner. Don't lapse on your dog care though! Keep microchip information updated, keep vaccinations updated, provide flea/tick treatment, do yearly vet check-ups. Make sure your yard is safe and secure. Keep a collar, tags, and a leash on your pet when out. Be the shining example of responsible pet ownership for others!
3) Adopt from a shelter or rescue and save a life. Buying a dog from a backyard breeder or taking a free dog from an "accidental" litter only encourages more breeding. Bankrupt the backyard breeders by refusing to buy. Don't take that free puppy, recommend the owner to surrender pups to rescue. Our rescue and many others offer free spay of the mother when the pups are surrendered, putting an end the the cycle of "accidental" litters.
4) Maybe you can't make the 10-20 year commitment to a pet. By fostering, you can be a temporary refuge to a pet in need. Fostering is a key stepping stone in a dog's journey to their furever home.
5) Did you know you can volunteer in more ways than just cleaning up after pups? You can volunteer to manage social media, to fundraise, to help out with accounting, to give pets rides to the vet. Use your own unique talents to help out where you can.
6) Donations come in all forms. Used beds, crates, toys, & blankets are always great donations. Maybe you don't have money or items do donate, but you have a business or special talent. You can donate a coupon/certificate for your business to be used in fundraising raffles. The possibilities are endless.
7) Share posts from your local shelters/rescues to promote animals looking for homes. Educate those around you about what it takes to be a responsible pet owner and why it is so important.
