Kern County Animal Services is one of the largest organizations in the Central Valley that rescues, houses and cares for lost and abandoned animals annually, enforces animal-related laws and acts to prevent cruelty to animals. We provide field services to the unincorporated areas of Bakersfield and Kern County. Our field staff works to prevent the spread of Rabies through our Rabies Control Progra

m including enforcing the licensing of dogs, and rabies vaccinations for dogs. Field staff also responds to reports of animal bites and places animals under quarantine when necessary; responds to stray animal calls and attempts to reunite lost pets with their owners through identification to prevent pets from ever entering the shelter. Kern County Animal Services has one shelter located in Bakersfield. We also have a contracted sheltering facility in Lake Isabella. In addition to field and sheltering services, we have a variety of programs to assist the public in being a responsible pet owner and to help shelter pets including:

Spay/Neuter Voucher Program for low-income residents
TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) Program

These are just SOME of lost dogs have recently arrived at the shelter. If your dog is missing, make Kern County Animal Services the first place you look! Reuniting you with your pet is our #1 priority!

In the past, costly impound fees prevented many owners from coming to the shelter to get their pet back. That is no longer true. You can get your dog back for as little as $15. If your lost pet is at the shelter, please contact us ASAP!

We are always taking standbys for the spay/neuter clinic to fill in the no show and cancellations.
Cats must be brought to the clinic in a hard plastic carrier with a flat top. Dogs must be brought on a leash.

Pets must meet the following criteria:
Weight: at least 2 pounds
Age : 2 months - 7 years
Pet must be in over all good health.

Restrictions:
The Snip bus cannot accept Dobermans or Doberman mixes due to clotting issues that could happen during surgery. It is best to have Dobies spay/neutered in a hospital setting.
Dogs that have any type of abdominal surgery including C-sections are not accepted on the mobile clinics.
Pet's that are currently lactating or have given birth within 3 months of the clinic date do not qualify.

Please be patient with the SNIP staff as they check in clients that do have appointments. The staff will try to assist the Standbys in a timely manner.

If your pet does get services, you will be billed for the $20 copay.

Our longest resident has been adopted! After 80 DAYS in the shelter SCARLETT O'HARA has been ADOPTED! Congrats to her and her new owner!

FREDWARD aka TOPPER! (1215361) He's a handsome and sweet 4 year old neutered male shepherd mix. He was brought to the shelter by a Good Samaritan. His body carries the scars of the tough life he lived out on the streets. He is currently 50 lbs but very underweight and should probably be closer to 60 lbs once he gains some weight. He walks good on the leash and rides excellent in the car. We are not sure if he’s potty trained but he only did his business outside and never in any stores. Fredward even knows sit, down, and shake. He likes to jump up and give hugs, but it’s super gentle. Today we got some lunch and Fredward ate a whole burger! Afterwards, we went to the pet store and he got a bath, which he was very patient for. We hung out in our backyard and had a little photo shoot and ate some snacks too. BIG MAMA just has 1 Rule - PET ME! Here she is in the play yard just as relaxed as can be. Watch her paw at KCAS Superstar Volunteer Nicole any time the petting stops! It's so sweet! Big Mama is potty trained, good on a leash, and good with other dogs. Especially mellow dogs with the same sort of loving personality. Big Mama may or may not be pregnant. So here's an idea - Foster to adopt her! If it turns out she's not, you can just adopt her. If it turns out she is, we'll provide everything she and her puppies need (when they arrive) at no cost. We'll also help find adoption or rescue for them! Our goal is to get her out of the shleter and out of danger as quickly as possible. MARTHA (1214249) is a big, sweet baby! She can also be stubborn! And sometimes she has an odd way of sitting... She's an easy-going 6 year old who gets along just fine with other dogs.
