Kern County Animal Services is one of the largest organizations in the Central Valley that rescues, houses and cares for lost and abandoned animals annually, enforces animal-related laws and acts to prevent cruelty to animals. We provide field services to the unincorporated areas of Bakersfield and Kern County. Our field staff works to prevent the spread of Rabies through our Rabies Control Progra

m including enforcing the licensing of dogs, and rabies vaccinations for dogs. Field staff also responds to reports of animal bites and places animals under quarantine when necessary; responds to stray animal calls and attempts to reunite lost pets with their owners through identification to prevent pets from ever entering the shelter. Kern County Animal Services has one shelter located in Bakersfield. We also have a contracted sheltering facility in Lake Isabella. In addition to field and sheltering services, we have a variety of programs to assist the public in being a responsible pet owner and to help shelter pets including:

Low-cost vaccination, licensing and microchipping clinics
Foster Program
Volunteer Program
Spay/Neuter Voucher Program for low-income residents
TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) Program
Safety Net Pet Food Program
General Pet Information and Referral Information for Community Services

These are just SOME of lost dogs have recently arrived at the shelter. If your dog is missing, make Kern County Animal Services the first place you look! Reuniting you with your pet is our #1 priority!

In the past, costly impound fees prevented many owners from coming to the shelter to get their pet back. That is no longer true. You can get your dog back for as little as $15. If your lost pet is at the shelter, please contact us ASAP!

KAYDEN (1216146) Male, 1 year old, 56 pounds, URGENT!

This dark brindle shepherd mix has a doggy cold and needs a hero to step up ASAP! Kayden has fallen between the cracks here at the shelter and has been overlooked. But many staff members have spoken up for him! They know he's an excellent boy who will find that someone special if he's just given the chance! He's done well in playgroups with lots of other dogs, been available for the Streets Of Bakersfield program too! But he's stuck behind the scenes in our medical kennels where no one can see him. If you're ready to adopt, foster, or rescue and want to save a life - Kayden could be the one!

CHIEF (1215730) Chief is the sweetest snuggle potato ever! When we first saw him In his kennel his kennel mates (both puppies) were hanging off his jowls and he didn't mind one bit! Once we picked him up we were off to get him all clean. While at the pet spa he was on his best behavior and loved all attention he received. Although we weren't able to get into the tub (he was uneasy of the ramp) he loved being wiped down with pet wipes. After he was all clean it was off to Dutch Bros for a Pup Cup which he LOVED! We ended the day at the park where Chief enjoyed laying in the sun and getting all the loves! He was great on leash but if you are looking for a dog to take long walks this isn't your guy. He's more of a chill on the couch kinda guy. He has some scratches on his face that are healing and was still so loving and trusting to us.
