61 animals fixed today by @snipbus in our target zip codes! (The zips where 80% of shelter intake comes from and have the lowest income levels) Huge thanks to the amazing SNIP Bus-Spay Neuter Imperative Project staff who show up every day and work their butts off, Dr. Flynn and Dr. Darrow for getting all these animals spayed and neutered and DoorDash for delivering the nugget festival. Teamwork does make the dream work and we are chipping away at getting as many animals fixed at each clinic. We are saving over 100 animals each month on less than $1,000 per month income and half that amount is our insurance. Rescue really is 7 days a week and underage pups can’t stay in the shelter or they are high risk for euthanasia. Every day we are rescuing the most vulnerable shelter population which is bottle babies, puppies under 8 weeks, pregnant and nursing moms. We always end up with a few adults along the way too. Another puppy with walking struggles we picked up this week. His rear leg is deformed which causes him to walk like a crab and we are thankful to be able to help him. This is the reality of our pet crisis in Bakersfield. Our shelters are at a breaking point with dog intake at an all time high and 40% are puppies. This very pregnant mom was about to have puppies and was going to be spayed. The reality is at this far along the puppies are viable and would have to be euthanized. Let that sink in for a minute. We all think our jobs suck but imagine having to euthanize puppies. It’s heartbreaking, but sadly this is our reality. There is no room and shelters and rescues are completely maxed out. Fortunately for this girl our rescue/foster coordinator was at the shelter picking up some dogs and happened to be in medical and when told about the mom didn’t hesitate to take her. We know the medical staff did not want to do this but the situation in the shelters is so dire right now. For now this pregnant girl is safe with her Unity K9 foster Melissa Montoya and will be going to @thelabellefoundation Monday. We are meeting tomorrow morning Saturday, January 13 at 10 AM to finish canvassing our Target neighborhoods around KMC in Bakersfield. If you can join us for a couple of hours to help these neighborhoods access spay and neuter, vaccines and other resources we are meeting at 2101 Mount Vernon Ave. in the church parking lot. Just show up at 10 am! It’s just across from the probation department and heritage Park on the east side of Mount Vernon. Today we did our first Kern SAFE canvassing event. 525 homes in 3 hours with 5 people is pretty good! 15 dogs are interested in S&N and a cat! We weren’t able to knock on doors cause there are massive amounts of dogs with 4 ft chain link fences and we are not trying to get eaten! We put flyers in the fences by the mailboxes and covered a huge area around KMC and to the south of flower and west of Mt. Vernon. If you’d like to join us Thursday 1/4 or Saturday 1/6 email [email protected] or just show up. We start at 10 am and meet at the church parking lot at 2101 Mt. Vernon Ave. This is absolutely worth the time and effort to reach dog owners and help them keep their pets healthy and at home.

🆘 We don’t post very often but this is truly an emergency cry for help. This year has been nothing if not traumatic, frustrating and overwhelming. As a rescue the flow of dogs has out grown what we can handle. To date we have rescued and transported over 1,600 dogs and have over 40 dogs currently in foster. Some are puppies that are growing up in foster and we still have 2 that we got from a litter that are now 8 months old and not going anywhere. We also have an elderly pitty mom with no teeth and tremors going no where so our rescue expenses are increasing as we normally do not have long-term fosters. This last two years have severely impacted our finances, donors and rescue partners to the point we cannot take on any more dogs without a rescue partner that is committed to taking them. We operate on less than $40,000 annually rescuing dogs with no salaries or overhead and save between 1500-2000 dogs every year. That’s around $20 to $26 per dog.
