So, it is time to get tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant seeds started for the summer harvest season. (I know a lot of people like to start them super early, but we don’t like to get in a rush because the soil takes time to warm up and you don’t wanna put your transplants out into cold soil because it’s susceptible to disease.) Generally speaking mid to end of January is plenty of time to start seeds and get them into shape to put into the ground for the end of March which is usually on the early side sometimes they don’t go out until mid April, again depending on the weather. Rather than buying individual Matt heaters, an old farmer once taught me a trick that I have used ever since. I take an air mattress that I purchased for under $20 fill it halfway with water and put a water bed heater underneath it to control the temperature of the water inside the air mattress. This allows me to start multiple flats all at the same time on one heater. Would a flat heater work instead of a water bed heater? Never tried it. But filling the air mattress halfway with water and then heating that water has worked for me for over a decade!

So when I was out of town I had the pleasure of stumbling upon this awesome little farm to market shop in the little town of Hawi.
This is really right on target for what I had hoped to see the old farmhouse converted into, if the City Council would have approved the Pioneer Grove at Eden's Garden development project.
Local farmers products, almost exclusively, lined the shelves, and most everyone grows all naturally or certified organic. (It seems as though they understand the fragile balance of the soil better than most.)

I was so impressed with the product selection and visited with the woman at the register while my smoothie was being made in the back.

Just imagine what a wonderful addition to the community it would be to have such a place right here on the farm. the property goes on the market next week. But it’s not too late for the council to take up the project and vote yes, allowing the Developers the opportunity to secure funding and address the implied obstacles (in the appropriate manner, at the appropriate juncture). Reach out to Mr. Salau, your district 7 council member, and tell him you want to see this project approved.

I was able to do something many, dare I say, MOST, farmers don't get the opportunity to do. I was ON VACATION! Woo Hoo!
I took advantage of some crazy low airfare and generous cousins in warm places (and very sweet and helpful local folks to look after the farm critters), and got back just in time to join you all in our deep cold. LOL
The plants remain under cover, I peeked at them yesterday, and so far, they look to have gone dormant - no noticeable change in size of broccoli heads.
Hopefully, we'll not come out of this cold and shoot up to 70 - much as it would feel good - so they'll just keep growing and not bolt. Soon as this deep cold ends, we'll be starting tomatoes, peppers and eggplant! Spring will be here before we know it.

Ya know ladies, the idea is for you to stay IN the barn at night…..

Real Food, Grown with Integrity

Eden’s main mission is to help people achieve access to better health through safer gardening techniques and local, organic and “un-conventional” food.

Open to the public seasonally, Eden's Organic Garden Center hosts a small neighborhood farmers' market each 1st, 3rd and 5th Saturday (April - Dec.). We are a producers only and only producers that practice un-conventional (traditional) or certified organic growing methods are welcome. The garden center will stock some produce from local producers who can’t make it to our market and as available, offer meats & eggs from animals raised on grass & without synthetic chemicals. All of our producers are Non GMO, traditional farmers using un-conventional methods like letting land lay fallow, using animal products to fertilize and common sense to work with Nature, not against her.

Eden’s Garden CSA Farm is one of those producers and grows right here on the back 14 acres behind the garden center and offers product through a CSA membership program and sells during Market Day.

You will also find organic gardening products, organic animal feed (Coyote Creek), all natural local feeds (Muenster Milling) and lots of friendly chickens on the loose to entertain you while you shop. Come on out to the farm for Market Day, join our CSA and shake the hand that feeds you! Real Food, Grown with Integrity.
