So, it is time to get tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant seeds started for the summer harvest season. (I know a lot of people like to start them super early, but we don’t like to get in a rush because the soil takes time to warm up and you don’t wanna put your transplants out into cold soil because it’s susceptible to disease.) Generally speaking mid to end of January is plenty of time to start seeds and get them into shape to put into the ground for the end of March which is usually on the early side sometimes they don’t go out until mid April, again depending on the weather. Rather than buying individual Matt heaters, an old farmer once taught me a trick that I have used ever since. I take an air mattress that I purchased for under $20 fill it halfway with water and put a water bed heater underneath it to control the temperature of the water inside the air mattress. This allows me to start multiple flats all at the same time on one heater. Would a flat heater work instead of a water bed heater? Never tried it. But filling the air mattress halfway with water and then heating that water has worked for me for over a decade!
