It's ok to love your dog as much as you love a human HOWEVER it is NOT ok to change your dogs identity to a "baby" or "human". I may say my dogs are my "babies" but I still treat them as a dog because taking their true nature away from them is 100% selfish and wrong. It creates an unbalanced ticking time bomb. Please understand it is OK to love your dog just make sure you respect them for what they are.

"Just a dog Groomer"

It was me, who kept the patience while your Bella struggled through a puppies very stressful, wiggling first groom. And their second. And their third. Fourth. Fifth....until finally the light bulb turns on and maturity happens. It was just me- loving what I do, for the same price as a mature, still, pet.

It was me, who accepted your terrified, nippy, matted shelter dog with open arms and taught them to trust a stranger. It was me, with urine in my lap, skin flakes on my smock, and a**l glands in my hair- when their tangle-free skin felt more relief than ever before.

It was me, who stayed late, unpaid, when your daughter had a school play and you thought hubby got the dog and he thought you did. Both your phones were on silent.... It was me when your dad had alzhimers and got lost I stayed till 10pm that day so Biscuit wouldn't be all alone and afraid, even though she didnt even know me and i never saw either of you again. It was me, when you fell asleep after work when they changed your shift and you left Bruno at the shop for hours. And again on my moms birthday when I had dinner reservations and you were nowhere to be found I had to re wash Cooper and Cleo when they pooped in the crate, cuz you were late. It was me- NOT making you feel like garbage. It was me showing empathy when due. (Imagine that in this era- treating a human with understanding)

It was me who groomed your parents dog for free when they fell on hard times.

It was me who worked 28 days straight with no day off after covid restrictions were lifted in 2020. For the love of your dogs, my elbows will never be the same again- but I couldn't sit at home one single day knowing how many of my clients pets were uncomfortable, matted, developing hot spots or ingrown toenails and ear infections from lack of grooming.

It was me, who helped find your sisters dog a loving home with a co-worker when she went in a nursing home.

It is me, who never turns away a shelter pet in need of a pro-bono groom.

It was me- who took your dog and groomed it when no one else could....or would...and I have the scars to prove it.

It is me, grooming a dog at a discount just to bribe the owner to come in on a regular for the well being of their pet when I already have a full schedule of properly priced, well mainteained dogs.

It was me, who told you Chole p*ed blood today and it was the vet who told you she had cancer but it was fate that she lived another 3 years because of red p*e on my white tile.

It IS me- sobbing hysterically into the coat of the dog I'm currently grooming: because I know she's aging terribly and I'm always afraid this is our last spa day together. It is me, struggling to dodge her many moles, lumps and bumps thru my tears as they creep up. It is me- trying not to let the new apprentice see me blubber in a moment of vulnerability and heartache.

It is my heart breaking with yours when it's time to say goodbye to our fur-angels. It's me, waking up in the middle of the night to have a good cry Over someone else's pet that I'll never see again. I've known some of these dogs longer than I've known my husband. This crap hurts and even after 12 years it doesn't get easier. If anything, chances are I've known the poor dog longer, and it hurts even more.

It's me, who remembers your pets favorite (and most hated) things. Dexter always wants a tennis ball. Marley needs a recess to run off energy before he can focus for his face trim. Max likes to play hockey with the zoom groom in the tub. Summit is allergic to chicken and needs special treats. Cooper can't have perfume and Bella has sensitive privates. Don't pluck Mannys ears cuz they get infected easily. Watch Sam's a**l glands they get full and infected. Abby tends to have ulcers under those eye boogers, and her mouth hurts, so move her face gently while trimming. Oliver doesn't like the dryer, so pre shaving is a necessity. Dutchess won't let you do anything after touching her feet, so do those last (Face first !) Theo has to go in the body hammock for his legs to ease his arthritis.....

It IS me who advocates for your dog's comfort and mental well-being when I shave the matting and tangles. Brush AND COMB your dog. I won't torture them as an afterthought. Ripping on matted hair will cause them pain, this pain they will associate with the grooming process and it will set them up for failure in the future, make them hate grooming and it will make them aggressive for the process.

It is me- who gets told I charge too much when my take home commission after taxes is less than they are paying employees at Target or Wal-Mart. Everything is expensive. I deserve a living too.

It's me- spending thousands of dollars on equipment and continued education to provide the best service I can for my clients to be told that it's my job to get bit. It's NOT my job to allow these dogs to disfigure, or destroy my body. A proper bite to the hand or face/eye can end my career that I've worked very hard for and love very much... the constant jerking/ thrashing and pulling from a dog that weighs almost as much as I do puts a lot of stress, strain and destruction on my joints, tendons, ligaments and muscles. It's hard on my body, it's physical labor and I do it for 8 to 10 hours a day, four to five days a week.

Regardless I love this job and it's the only thing I've thoroughly enjoyed as a career for the last 12 years... I'm only 37 and shouldn't be feeling like I played pro-football at the end of the day. Train your dog. Don't get mad when I tell you they were naughty either. I openly communicate with my clients so that they don't have unrealistic expectations of The Grooming process. Your dog will get the best haircut I can give them. But if they are matted or uncooperative, don't expect perfection, and do expect to have "homework" in the form of brushing or training. I am just a human being. This is not a Disney movie and singing them does not hypnotize them to listen to me, no matter how badly I want it to.

Did you know that your dog's retractable leash is not just a poor training decision for most dogs, it's also downright DANGEROUS?

If your dog is already prone to pulling on a leash, a retractable lead will exacerbate that problem. The mechanics of it teach them that if they pull at the end, they will be rewarded by getting to walk further away from you. This encourages them to pull when on walks, even if they're back on a standard leash.

Many retractable leashes can extend over 20 feet! While some owners feel that this gives their dog additional freedom on walks, it can also allow your dog to get away from you and get into a dangerous situation. Imagine that your dog is at the very end of a long retractable lead, and a stray animal takes you both by surprise by running out of some bushes and starting a fight with your dog. Not only are you 20 feet away from where this is happening, but you also can't control your own dog because the cord is too thin to pull them back without getting some SERIOUS rope burn on your hands.

Can your dog be a bit skittish sometimes? Imagine that you trip on a walk and accidentally drop your retractable leash, and that plastic housing that stores the cord clatters on the concrete. Your dog runs a few steps away, hearing that thud behind them... and now they take off, because the dragging of that plastic housing on the pavement is making a terrible scary noise right at their heels and they think they're being chased! This is a shockingly common tale when dogs go missing.

Last, but certainly not least, they can be dangerous for both the dog and the human on the other end! Dogs have been known to be severely injured by running full sp*ed until they are out of lead, and the resulting trauma to their neck can cause burns and wounds, collapsed and lacerated tracheas, and even permanent spinal damage. These leashes are known to break down over time. That thin cord can break pretty easily and snap back to injure the handler at the other end. As a dog owner in that situation, it's often your first instinct to grab at the cord to stop your dog from taking off, but that can cause deep lacerations and even complete finger amputations!

While SOME owners use them for training (i.e. working on a dog's recall), the risks almost always FAR outweigh the benefits of using a retractable leash, especially on your daily walks. Play it safe for your dog and yourself and opt for a traditional leash or slip lead!

ABSOLUTELY NO RUDE COMMENTS ABOUT THE CONDITION OF THIS DOG!
I WILL NOT TOLERATE ANY DISPLAY OF HATEFUL BEHAVIORS & YOU WILL BE REMOVED FROM MY PAGE! ALL MY CLIENTS WILL BE TREATED WITH KINDNESS & RESPECT, THANK YOU

This is Scooter, due to tragic circumstances he was way over due for grooming and he had become severely matted. Today I had the pleasure of meeting Scooter and was honored to be the groomer that made this sweet little guy feel 100% better.

I love all my clients and treat every dog in my care as if it were my own, but today was a perfect reminder as to why I chose this profession, even though my job is dirty, it's hard, takes lots of patients, sometimes it's dangerous and can downright be physically, mentally & emotional exhausting but it's worth it! It's worth it, because dogs like Scooter are worth it! ❀

Just a reminder, class is cancelled today due to the building still smells like paint and the weather prevents us from training outside. We will meet next Friday at 6pm 10/30/2020. Thank you for understanding and look forward to meeting everyone next week!!

I have spent many years studying dog behavior, learning to understand their language. I strive in creating a fear free grooming experience for every dog entrusted into my care.

Sometimes I don't think pet owners realize that while I'm grooming their dog, I'm also training him. I'm not training basic obedience, but in that moment I do teach dogs very special skills.

One of the most important in my mind is trust. I do my best to teach them they can trust me. They can trust that if I see something is scary or uncomfortable, I will help them through it, not force them through it. I will find a different way that is not uncomfortable or painful.

They are taught that they can trust me to listen when they tell me something is wrong.

I believe there is always a reason for misbehaving and I make it my goal to find out why or at the very least I won't put them in the same position or situation that makes them feel they need to defend themselves. I will find another way. I may change how I am holding or restraining them. I may start from the beginning on desensitizing to the equipment. Somewhere along the line, they learned that grooming was scary, uncomfortable, unpleasant or painful.

I need to teach them to trust me that it will no longer be that way.

In those times, when that dog is on my table, he has my full attention. I am watching for the little things. I watch his body language. I notice his small reactions so I can avoid the big ones.

I notice that he stiffens when the dryer gets to his shoulders as he anticipates getting his head dried. That is my teaching moment. That is when the dryer is turned down to just a whisper. That is when he learns to trust that I will never blast him in the face with it.

I notice that lifting his foot only an inch off the table is fine, 2 inches is a struggle. That is my teaching moment. That is when he learns that he can trust I won't make him struggle at 2 inches and will do what I need at 1 inch.

Eventually, when we have that trust, 2 inches isn't so bad because in the end it was 4 or 5 inches that was the problem. He was just anticipating it and trying to avoid it before it was a problem.

While I'm grooming a dog I'm not thinking about anything else. I keep myself in the moment. Dance the dance with the dog on my table, not the dog that is next on the board, not the dog that I did previously, not the owner, not the stack of bills sitting at home or the appointment I have to rush to after work. The dog on my table deserves all of my attention, as I deserve the dog's attention.
