Vaccinate dogs and cats yearly for rabies. State law

Garland Co: The 1st rabid bat of the year was found dead on a veterinarian's porch! Luckily, no exposures.

Lonoke Co: Rabid cat #2, a 9-week-old kitten. Multiple people who came in contact with the kitten are receiving PEP. The kitten's mother and siblings, who were all unvaccinated, were euthanized.

Pulaski Co: A skunk was found seizing in a barn on a veterinarian’s property (what's up with all the animals going to the vet's homes?) There were no known human or animal exposures.

Little River Co: A dog killed a bat in the yard that was positive for rabies. The dog had been vaccinated within the last 6 months (Yay!) so was going to get a booster, along with the other family dogs and will be monitored for 45 days. There were no human exposures.

Sebastian Co: A skunk was out in the daytime and lunged at a person in a state park but did not make contact (Whew!) The skunk was trapped and submitted to a veterinary clinic for testing. There were no known human or animal exposures.

Lonoke Co: A skunk was found dead in a yard with some dogs. It is not known if the dogs killed the skunk or if the skunk just died there. Dogs assumed to have some contact with the skunk so are being booster vaccinated and quarantined. There were no human exposures.

Montgomery Co: A bat was found in a bucket outside. Bat was laying in the bottom with wings spread open, and would make noises if the bucket was moved, but would not try to fly. There were no human or animal exposures.

Polk Co: A skunk came out from underneath a car mid-day and lunged at a homeowner but did not make contact. The skunk then ran into the enclosed yard with the dogs who killed it. One person who came into contact with the dogs opted for PEP. The dogs are receiving booster vaccinations and will be monitored for 45 days.

More reminders that we need to spread the word about rabies vaccinations! Our pets are much more likely to come into contact with a rabid animal than we, and they can, in turn, pass that the virus on to us.

Vaccinations in some of the cases above, saved the lives of the domestic animals because all they needed was a booster and close observation for 45 days after exposure. If they had no vaccination, the vet would recommend euthanasia (as in the case with the cats.)

Rabid Kitten - Sebastian County. Although it has been a couple of years since a cat tested positive for rabies, AR Dept of Health reports that there has been a positive case involving a kitten who had been acquired by a family and had been in their care just a short time when it began to behave in a "weird" way. Luckily, members of the same family had just been started on rabies PEP stemming from another incident involving a cat bite that was unrelated. However, there were multiple possible exposures at the home where the kitten was born, and as of the time of the initial report, ADH was still investigating the risk to those individuals.

Shockingly, one individual involved stated that they didn't know that there were vaccinations to protect against rabies for pets. Another example of how we need to improve our message of rabies prevention. Education and enforcement are key!

Just a friendly reminder! 🐾

It’s hot outside, but it’s way hotter where we walk. Even the grass is well over 100 degrees.

According to Bark Busters, a dog training company, paws can burned within 60 seconds at 125 degrees, and much faster with temperatures above 140 degrees.

Bald K**b Police Department’s K9 Finnick has received donation of body armor

Bald K**b Police Department’s K9 Finnick has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Finnick’s vest was embroidered with the sentiment “Born to Love-Trained to Serve- Loyal Always”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and NIJ certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 4,601 vests to K9s in all 50 states at a value of $6.9 million, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $960 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1,744-$2,283, weighs an average of 4-5 lb., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information, or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call 508-824-6978. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provides information, lists events, and accepts donations at www.vik9s.org, or you may mail your contribution to P.O. Box 9, East Taunton, MA 02718.
