If you’ve done training with us, you know that we are huge advocates for crate training! Recently though, I had an experience with one of my personal dogs that fully cemented that belief for me-

A few weeks ago, my 1 year-old puppy Coven underwent emergency surgery to remove a foreign body that was stuck in her colon: a piece of one of her stuffed toys that she had torn off and eaten before I was able to take it away from her. Surgery went really well, but afterwards we were facing 2 weeks of strict crate rest during her recovery with an extremely active and high energy young dog.

I am so grateful that Coven has been crate trained since puppyhood, and that being confined to a kennel while she recovered was not an additional source of stress for either of us. She was kenneled at the vet’s office after her surgery for the rest of the day while she was monitored for potential complications, and then she spent the next 14 days crated with me at home. And she was OKAY- she loves her crate, she was not stressed or anxious to be spending her time there, and she is good as new now.

An emergency surgery was definitely not anywhere on my radar when this happened; I don’t think emergencies are really ever on ANYONE’S radar- but they happen, and proactively crate training your dog can help ensure that you’re as prepared as possible in case something unlucky comes up (a medical emergency, an evacuation, emergency crate/rotate, etc.).

I can’t imagine how stressful and scary it would have been for her to have had no prior exposure to crate training, and then suddenly be confined to a kennel for weeks with no preparation. THAT is why we ask you to crate train your dogs. I promise, it is not because we want to see your dogs living in a kennel- it’s so you have the peace of mind of knowing that if you ever need to confine them, they will be as comfortable as they can be.🤍

Starting off 2025 in the best possible way- Honey, Annika, Argus, and Ellie Mae are all puppies (7 months and under) are all here for 4 week board and train programs! 😍

Honey is a 5 month-old Mini Bernedoodle who is just a genetically very nervous girl. Her level of insecurity makes it super difficult for her family to make any type of training or socialization progress with her, and also makes potty training extremely challenging due to her excessive submissive peeing. We’ll be working hard over the next month to help Honey learn that the world isn’t nearly as scary as she thinks it is, and to instill obedience skills & management techniques to help her family enjoy her more easily back at home.

Annika & Argus are 3 month-old Great Pyrenees mixes here to learn all about puppy obedience! These cuties will be livestock guardian dogs on their family’s farm someday, but for the time being they’ll be learning all about greeting people politely, coming when they’re called, and socializing appropriately!

Ellie Mae is a 7 month-old Mini Goldendoodle who is here to learn all about basic obedience and household manners. She is a super energetic girl who jumps excessively and looses her ability to listen or focus when she’s overly excited- we’ll be working hard to help her learn to regulate her emotions and settle more easily in the house, as well as instilling solid on & off leash obedience skills proofed around distractions.

We are so excited to get to work with these babies! 🤍

If your dog has a hard time settling down in the house, be sure that your approach to helping them isn’t accidentally contributing to the issue. 🩶

A few adjustments in your routine may be all you need to start seeing progress!

Hot take: your dog trainer does not care if your dog can sit 🙈

I don’t care at all what position your dog waits in, as long as he isn’t rushing past you to barrel out the door. I don’t care if he holds a stay until you to release him to eat his food- I care that he knows not to resource guard it from your children or other dogs. I don’t care if he can do party tricks if he takes off running every time you unclip the leash.

Teaching your dog fun things at home is GREAT, as long as it isn’t a substitution for teaching the behaviors that allow them to be successful members of society too. There’s certainly a time and place for obedience commands, but the real bread and butter of dog training is helping them learn how to behave outside of the time they spend holding a sit-stay.

So often owners will contact us for training and tell us “he’s really good- he already knows sit and lay down!” But unless your dog is a gentleman the other 98% of the time too, we have much bigger fish to fry than that. 🐠

Hi, I’m Kenzie 👋🏼

I’m the owner of Elite Obedience Training, and the trainer you’ll work with if you book any programs in Baldwin City, KS! I have been training professionally for 7 years now, with experience in puppy foundation, basic obedience, competition obedience, and behavior modification.

When I’m not working with client dogs, you can find me spending time with my own German Shepherds- Draco (6 years old), Envy (6 years old), Valkyrie (4 years old), Wolf (3 years old), and Coven (1 year old). In my free time, I train and compete with them in Schutzhund/IGP, which is a working dog sport centered on tracking, obedience, and protection. I have titled both Draco and Envy to an IGP3, Valkyrie and Wolf to an IGP1 (so far), and I have competed at the national level with Draco for the past several years!

My favorite part of training is helping owners to be able to truly enjoy their dogs- it is so fulfilling to see training open up new freedoms and opportunities for the dogs we work with, but equally as rewarding to watch the quality of life improve for the humans involved too. 🤍

This beautiful girl is looking for her forever home!

Shiva is a 1 year-old long coated German Shepherd who will be staying with us as a foster until she finds the perfect fit.
She was imported from Germany as a puppy, and she has a good amount of training under her belt already!

A little bit about her:
• she is crate & potty trained
• she has solid basic obedience and a reliable off leash recall (she has been through training with us!)
• she loooooves food
• she is up to date on vet care, vaccinations, and preventative
• she’s great with people!
• she is safe with other dogs on walks/hikes, but would do best as the only dog in her household (she doesn’t love sharing her people with other dogs at home)
• she is a bit overly interested in cats, so we’d recommend a home without them

She is located in Baldwin City, KS, and will come with ongoing training/support from us to help her transition into her new home- please reach out with any interest, or to set up a meet and greet 🐶

Say hello to Cooper 👋🏼

Cooper is a 5 month-old Coonhound puppy here for a 4 week behavior modification board and train program! Do not be swayed by his cuteness 😂 Cooper has a pretty serious resource guarding problem when it comes to his food, his bones, and any household item he steals that he feels belongs to him.

We’ll be spending the next 4 weeks addressing that behavior, as well as instilling some very reliable on & off leash obedience skills to help his family manage him more easily back at home!

Very much looking forward to all of the progress to come for this little man- stay tuned for updates! 💚

We are now full for the remainder of the year for 4 week/behavior modification programs, but we do have one spot left available for a 2 week board and train starting the week of Dec. 2- this will be our last available board and train opening of the year! After that spot is filled, we will be booking into 2025.
