Second video showing crazy walk watching Seeker
Second crazy walk video that shows me doing the turns as he gets ahead of me. Always gently when working with pups. As he gets better I will start treating him when he sits in the heel position.
Seeker continues to grow and thrive. At 4 1/2 months he really enjoys learning new things and working as my partner. Lately, we have been doing more formal recalls, which includes a sit-stay, and then a sit when he reaches me. Down the road we will add in a double whistle blow so I can call him in from a distance. Also we are beginning heel work by doing the crazy walk. Basically changing direction when the pup gets out ahead. I am including a few videos to show how we work on this.
The sit and wait for food video.
Just a quick Seeker update. He is now 16 weeks old, and starting to add to his training. We have taken a break from retrieving as is has been hot and humid this week, so we are working on wait, sit, kennel, and the beginning of the here and heel commands. So the attached videos are of building that self control with wait and sit commands. The first is for getting out of the car and automatically going into a sit. This is a huge safety tool for unloading your dog, and can also be used when going out of any door if your dog gets too excited by that transition. The second video is how I ask my dogs to behave when they are getting fed. A nice quiet sit and wait is required to earn the huge reward of a bowl of kibble. I also add the kennel command as I know he will comply with Tha big reward. Over time I will be able to send him to the kennel without the food. I will try to post videos of here and heel work next week. Stay frosty!
Seeker is growing fast! Almost 30 lbs at 15 weeks. He is learning quickly and already getting some nice manners. We continue to work on "wait", and he is consistent with waiting to come out of his kennels, and going through doorways. He is also doing well waiting on retrieves and for eating his dinner. This impulse control is something that will help him be an excellent retriever and companion. He is also starting to work on sit and stay, and I am using the scale at work as a "place" to send him to. This skill is helpful if you want your dog waiting to retrieve outside the blind, or if you want him to settle on a bed while greeting friends at home. I also use "place" to send dogs to home base so I can work retriever drills by myself.
