Lucca—
Served in Iraq/Afghanistan, 2006–2012

Lucca was highly trained German Shepherd–Belgian Malinois mix that served with the United States Marine Corps for six years with her handler Chris Willingham. She completed over 400 patrols across Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lucca specialized in explosive detection—and during her service, not a single Marine was injured on her watch.

On one mission during her second tour, Lucca located a buried IED (improvised explosive devices) moments before a second device detonated beneath her. She lost a leg in the blast, but her actions saved lives. After recovering, she retired to live peacefully with her handler.

In recognition of her bravery, Lucca received the Dickin Medal—the highest award for animal gallantry—as well as the Animals in War & Peace Medal of Bravery.

Thank you, Lucca and Chris Willingham, for your loyalty and bravery!

🙏With deep gratitude to those who've served, and to the dogs who walked beside them without question. As we celebrate this 4th of July, may we take a moment to remember the sacrifices —both human and canine—that protect the freedoms we enjoy today!

Smoky—
Served in WWII, 1944–1945, Pacific Theater (New Guinea, Philippines)

A tiny 4-pound Yorkshire Terrier was discovered abandoned in a New Guinea foxhole in 1944 and adopted by Corporal Bill Wynne. Despite her size, she became a wartime legend—surviving kamikaze raids, a typhoon, and the invasion of Luzon, where she once saved Wynne’s life by warning him of incoming artillery.

She flew on 12 combat missions, often riding in Wynne’s pack near active machine guns, and learned over 200 commands.

Her most heroic act came in January 1945, when she crawled through a narrow, 70-foot pipe carrying a wire that restored communications—saving soldiers from having to do the dangerous job themselves. Her reward? A steak dinner from the canteen.

After the war, Wynne smuggled her home in a modified oxygen mask case. Smoky became a post-war celebrity and is now recognized as the first official therapy dog, visiting wounded soldiers and lifting spirits wherever she went.

Thank you to Smoky and Corporal Bill Wynne who gave everything. We remember you!

Chip—
Served in WWII, 1942–1945, Europe & North Africa

On July 10, 1943, during the Allied invasion of Sicily, Chips and his handler Pvt. John Rowell came under heavy machine-gun fire. Without hesitation, Chips broke free and charged the enemy bunker.

Moments later, soldiers heard gunfire—then silence. Out of the chaos, Chips reappeared, gripping one Italian soldier by the throat. Rowell quickly called him off, and three more enemy troops surrendered with their hands raised.

For his fearless actions, Chips became one of the most decorated war dogs, later receiving the prestigious Dickin Medal for bravery.

We salute Chip and Pvt John Rowel for their service to our country! Your sacrifice is not forgotten.

👉Don't forget to check in tomorrow for our third honorary war dog that served for our freedom!

Sargent Stubby—
Served in WWI, 1917–1918, Western Front

Stubby was discovered as a stray at Yale, he unofficially joined the 102nd Infantry. He served in 17 battles, warned soldiers of mustard gas, located wounded troops, and even captured a German spy—earning the unique rank of sergeant

One quiet night on the Western Front, Stubby was resting beside his handler, Corporal Conroy, when something suddenly caught his attention. His head snapped up, ears alert. Moments later, he sniffed the air, let out a low growl, and bolted from the dugout into the darkness.

Conroy, now wide awake, grabbed his rifle and followed the commotion—only to discover Stubby had tackled a German spy sneaking through the trenches. The soldier struggled to escape, but Stubby held on fiercely until help arrived.

Thanks to his quick instincts and bravery, Stubby helped prevent a potential attack—earning his place as the first dog in U.S. history to capture an enemy soldier, and the highest-ranking dog to ever serve the army.

Thank you to Sargent Stubby and his handler Corporal Conroy for their devoted service!

🚨We’ve seen several confirmed cases of panleukopenia at our clinic recently.

This highly contagious and often deadly virus is affecting unvaccinated cats and kittens in our area—especially barn cats and outdoor pets.

We’ve put together a quick post to help you understand:
📌 What panleukopenia is
📌 How it spreads
📌 What symptoms to watch for
📌 Why prevention is critical

💉 The most effective protection is vaccination. If your cat hasn’t been vaccinated or you're unsure of their status, now is the time to act—before more cases spread.

👉 Swipe through to learn more and call us at 435-722-9066 to schedule your cat’s vaccines or wellness visit.
