This special day was started in 2011 to remind us of the value of black cats, to dispel prejudices, to encourage people to give a new home to black cats left behind at animal shelters. Here is your friendly reminder that Porcupines live in our backyards! They really aren't a problem (we couldn't resist a little Taylor Swift meme), but be vigilant when your dog is outside with you!
Porcupines are the third largest rodent and live in many rural areas in North America. They range in weight between 15 and 35 pounds. They are herbivores (plant-eaters), slow-moving, and have poor eyesight, although they have a great sense of smell. Because they are nocturnal, they do most of their feeding at night. They are not aggressive, but they happily defend themselves, their offspring, and their dens if needed.
Quills are modified hairs and are covered with scales that act like fishhook barbs causing the quills to keep moving inward, deeper into the tissue. Porcupine quills can puncture the skin and move through muscle, ultimately penetrating into body cavities and internal organs. Because the quills carry bacteria with them, once they pe*****te the skin they can serve as a source of infection and abscesses.
If your dog gets quilled, get to a veterinarian as quickly as possible. Dogs need deep sedation or general anesthesia in order to have porcupine quills removed safely. As many quills as possible will be removed, but it is important to understand that there may be quills that cannot be removed. Any that cannot be removed will be monitored for migration and any complications that may arise.

Look at this great photo of Dr. Wallingford and our friend Sally, with her beautiful Golden Retriever, Moxie! They presented educational information to kids in our community this week, helping the next generation of animal lovers learn about pet care and the importance of veterinary medicine. Sally educated the kids about canine agility and emergency search and rescue services that her dogs are well known and loved for! A great time was had by all! :)

The past year has been extra challenging with COVID, curbside care, and the pet adoption boom. But our group really stepped up to the challenge and made a difference is so many lives! Our team is a bunch of helpful, happy, compassionate, hardworking, animal-loving, client-caring, intelligent, talented super stars and we APPRECIATE YOU!!!!
Curbside care has definitely had its share of challenges. Helpful tip: We encourage you to write down your list of questions or concerns about your pet and give it to the doctor at your appointment!
