Saturday Puppy Socials are back at HOWL with a twist! Join us for supervised play and play based learning for puppies up to 6 months old! Puppy Play & Learn is replacing our Saturday morning Puppy Socials and adding play based learning for foundation and social skills. Learn the basics of positive reinforcement training, build confidence and engagement, and bring out the best in your pup from the very start. This class offers rolling admission as well as drop-ins. The six session series is $165, drop-ins are $30 per day. Space is limited with priority given to families with the six session package. Goodest boy, Boscov, came in to visit us at today! Can you believe this practically perfect and humbly hamsome boy is still available for adoption at BARCS?!😱Boscov is estimated to be 3-4-ish, weighs in at 70 # of love, walks well on lead, does well with kids and other dogs, shows promise with cats, take his treats so gently, and loves bubble baths! He’s crate trained, house trained, and trustworthy with your prized positions and sofa. This picture does not do him, his shiny coat, or his soft squishy face justice! Sweet girl, Yardley, is our dog of the day! We’re helping her and her family prepare for a new brother (puppy)! Shout out to our friends at dog friendly for making our foster, Murphy, feel so loved! This guy is a perfect (murphect?) coffee date…but would appreciate a corner of your scone. He’s 3.5 years young, great with dogs, cats, and kids, loves long walks and couch cuddles. If there’s a Newfie size space in your heart and home, inquire within!

Let’s Talk About Safety

When introducing a cat and dog, it’s essential to ensure that everyone stays safe—including the caretaker.

When bringing home a new pet, set up a separate, secure space for them away from the resident pet(s). This area should be cozy, enriching, and comfortable. Spend quality time with the new pet in their designated space so they begin to associate it with safety and positive interactions. When it's time for the new pet to explore the home, ensure the resident pet is elsewhere—on a walk, in their catio, at doggie daycare, or napping behind a closed door.

As the new pet becomes more comfortable, you can begin visual introductions. Set up a physical barrier such as baby gates stacked securely or a pet gate. Drape a blanket over the barrier, leaving just an inch or two gap at the bottom so the pets can gradually see each other without becoming overwhelmed.

Once both pets display neutral body language and no signs of stress, you can try a brief, supervised interaction without the barrier. Keep the dog on a leash during this step in case they become overstimulated or attempt to chase the cat.

Make sure your cat has access to vertical space, such as shelves or a cat tree, and an easy escape route back to their safe zone if they feel uncomfortable.

Most importantly, never force interactions. Rushing the process can lead to fear, anxiety, and long-term tension between your pets. Patience and a slow, positive approach are key to a successful integration.
