Tis the season to be grateful, and we're grateful to help prevent dental disease. According to the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC), dogs and cats should have a veterinary dental cleaning annually starting at age two, or sooner if they have some other oral health problem identified earlier.

Originally from Maryland, Dr. Carlie Caplan is excited to be practicing veterinary medicine close to home. She graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Biological Sciences from University of Maryland, College Park before going on to receive her veterinary degree from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Caplan has a strong interest in managing endocrine conditions, performing soft tissue surgeries, and providing thorough dental care. She is passionate about delivering individualized care and forming lasting connections with both pets and their families.

When she’s not in the clinic, Dr. Caplan enjoys skiing, exploring new places, reading a good book, and sailing on the Chesapeake Bay with her family. She has loved exploring Baltimore with her rescue pup, Murphy.

We are so excited to welcome veterinarian Dr. Anna Martin to our Fells Point team! Dr. Martin is accepting new clients, give us a call at 410-216-0970 or book online now! Read her bio below:

Having lived all along the west coast from an island in Washington state to San Diego, California, Dr. Martin decided to adventure to the east coast when she attended the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine, which she graduated from in 2019. After a year of working at Louisiana State University, she settled down in Baltimore. Realizing how special Fells Point is, she moved to the neighborhood in 2021. She loves the community here and all the little things that make Fells Point special.

She has a special appreciation for cats and all the unique conditions that they can face, so she is certified as a cat friendly veterinarian. She's also very passionate about minimizing the stress of patients in the clinic and is Fear Free Certified.

Outside of the clinic, Dr. Martin spends her free time with her two ocicats, Rory and Rupert, and loves baking, playing Magic: The Gathering and video games, and painting miniatures and watercolors.

There has been an animal safety alert issued by the State of Maryland for the non-tidal Potomac River due to toxic algal mats. Anatoxin was detected at higher levels than seen before. No animal cases have been reported to date; however, animal contact with algal mats that have washed up on the shoreline should be avoided. These harmful algae are native to the Chesapeake Bay and occur in higher abundances mostly during low flow, high temperatures (the hottest/ driest parts of summer) and when specific nutrient levels are present. Toxic algae mats are currently located in the Potomac River in the area from Edwards Ferry to Great Falls, Montgomery County.

🔺Livestock should be kept away from algal mats and kept out of the river.

🔺Dog owners are advised to keep pets on leash, prevent them from eating algal mats (in water or on shore), wash them after being in affected areas, give fresh water to drink and contact your veterinarian if signs are noted.
