April 17th is Tortoiseshell Cat Appreciation Day! Some fun facts about our fiesty little friends, also known as "Torties:"

* Maryland icon Edgar Allan Poe's beloved Cattarina was a Tortoiseshell.
* Male tortoiseshell cats are incredibly rare, and usually sterile. Only 1 in 3,000 Torties is a male!
* The Tortoiseshell coat pattern can be seen on a variety of cat breeds, and only Torties and Calicos possess the red and black coat color gene. Calicos' extra spotting gene gives them their distinct unpigmented spots.
* Chimeras can be found in Torties, where one side of the body or face is a completely different color.
* Numerous patterns have been identified in Tortoiseshell cats' coats; when Tabby stripes are noted, these unique cats are dubbed "Torbies."
* Through many cultures, you'll find auspicious legends about these beauties.

Please share photos of your own Torties; we would love to see them.

If you are looking for a cat with a BIG personality (sometimes, "Tortitude"), stop by the Maryland SPCA or another local shelter and welcome one of these spunky cats into your life. We would love to partner with you for their healthcare!

We know many of you knew and loved our office boy, Fox. His extensive fan base really felt the loss from his passing in November, and we couldn't be more excited to announce our plan to have him live on:

The Fox Fund.

The Fox Fund gives donors the ability to make a direct donation or round up their purchase at checkout to go to cats in need right here at Cat Hospital At Towson, in addition to crowdfunding for their own cat's care! We look forward to sharing their stories and are deeply grateful to you for partnering with us to keep cats with their families.

Sending a big thank you to Dumbarton Middle School PTSA for asking us to partner with them for their Career Fair last week. It was an honor teaching the next generation of veterinary professionals about the field we love.

For those who weren't there, if you have a child interested in the field, here is the flyer we brought with us for you to give to them!

Dear friends,

05/26/2020

Dear CHAT Friends,

I hope you have been able to enjoy a relaxing and safe holiday weekend. My thoughts go out to all of you who are remembering loved ones who gave their lives serving our country and also those that have been lost to the pandemic we are currently fighting.

It is hard to believe that it has been almost 3 months since our lives changed so dramatically. We are all anxious to inch back towards the “normal life” we once enjoyed. With many businesses re-opening, some of you have asked when we will be able to welcome you back inside our hospital. We are continuing to explore ways we can do that safely while we continue with curbside and transfer table service at this time. To help understand our decision, please consider the following:

1. Guidelines regarding risk of COVID-19 transmission

The more time you spend and the closer in space you are to any infected people, the higher your risk. Interacting with more people raises your risk, and indoor places are riskier than outdoors.

2. The Veterinarian’s Oath

“Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.

I will practice my profession conscientiously, with dignity, and in keeping with the principles of veterinary medical ethics.

I accept as a lifelong obligation the continual improvement of my professional knowledge and competence.”

Most people don’t think of veterinarians as people who work to protect public health. That is a large part of our training, is integral to our work and why veterinarians have been “essential” during the pandemic. We have been trained and work to protect you from external and intestinal parasites, diseases such as Rabies, Toxoplasmosis, Cat Scratch Disease (yes, it’s real, and why flea prevention for all cats is crucial preventive care), Lyme Disease, Ringworm and many others. Now we must use those same skills to protect against transmission of COVID-19 to you and to our staff.

We recognize that continuing curbside and transfer table services may be re-assuring to some of you, and disappointing to others. We miss seeing all of you! Know that although continuing personalized service is much more labor-intensive on our side and more time consuming for all of us, we feel that it is our only choice right now given the information that we have, and our role in public health and keeping everyone safe. For your safety and convenience we are usually able to have cats coming for appointments arrive in advance and stay for a while, allowing you to go to work, do needed errands, or even go home. Cats coming in for procedures such as dentistry can often be brought in the evening prior at no additional charge.

As we settle into our new routines working in our new normal, we are expanding our telemedicine services. If you have concerns about your cat but are unable or reluctant to come in, please email or call us to discuss if telemedicine is an appropriate option.

As always, stay safe, be well, and love your cats!🐾🐾

Sincerely,

Jane Brunt, DVM

🚗😸🚙

Corona virus has affected everyone, and CHAT remains committed to our core values of Compassion, Competence and Commitment. Our mission is “Caring for Cats, and the People Who Love Them!”

😸 We will continue to always greet you with a smile, and resume handshakes when the corona virus outbreak subsides
😸 We have implemented a robust disinfection schedule and checklist to sanitize surfaces outside and inside our building
😸 We are washing our hands frequently, including prior to and after handling patients
😸 We will take advance information via a form distributed in advance of your cat’s appointment
😸 We will come out to your car for whatever is needed:

😸 We will always listen with compassion and respect, partnering with you to provide the best care and expert advice possible for your cat
😸 We will continue our ongoing continuing education for cat health and welfare through on-line seminars and courses

Maryland K-12 schools are closed and we will be at CHAT for our clients and patients!

Check out the resources on this page; we are already taking these and other precautions. We'll post updates here and you can call us with questions on how we can help you! 410-377-7900

Our staff is very aware of the current health situation (COVID-19), and we are doing our best to reduce the spread of diseases by increasing our cleaning and disinfecting protocol. Another precaution we are taking is to avoid handshakes and hugs. In consideration for our other clients, we ask that anyone showing signs or symptoms of being ill to perhaps have a trusted family or friend bring your pet in, or call our office to reschedule the visit if possible.

We have also been getting several questions regarding the virus itself so we wanted to share a bit of reliable information in relation to how it affects pets and pet owners:

- At this time, there is no evidence that companion animals, including pets, can spread COVID-19

- There is no reason to think that any animals, including pets, in the United States might be a source of infection with this new coronavirus

- To date, CDC has not received any reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19

- For extra safety, as this virus is new and we are still learning about it, if you have been diagnosed or advised to stay in isolation please reduce your interaction with your pets just as you would with humans

- With all of this in mind, since animals can spread many other diseases to people, it’s always a good idea to wash your hands after being around animals at any time

Thank you for your attention and understanding. As usual, please don't hesitate to call our office with any questions!

We love these happy ending stories!!

Futz Sinclair got adopted yesterday!

We didn't have a chance to get her picture when she was in the adoption room. She came and left before we met her. But, her adopter took this pic of her before she adopted her and sent it to us!

She reports that Futz, now named Gracie, is doing amazing in her new home! Eating well and adjusting to her new life.

Thank you for thinking about our shelter when you were looking for your new kitty!

If you are looking for a new BFF, please come visit us! A few adorable tabbies are still waiting for their forever homes!

Two paws up Maryland--we surpassed our goal!! 2,765 homeless cats and kittens were adopted from the Maryland SPCA and 20 other Maryland shelters during our third Maryland 2,000 Saving Lives Across Maryland month-long adoption promotion.

Thank you to everyone who opened your hearts and homes to a homeless feline in July! You not only helped the pet(s) you adopted, but you made room in our shelters so we could take in other homeless cats and kittens during this busy time of year.

And, a big thank you to everyone who helped spread the word about this important promotion! Because of paw-some supporters like you, we were able to save an additional 175 felines compared to last year! Thank you to our sponsor Cat Hospital At Towson and the 29 other veterinary clinics for providing adopters with free wellness exams for their newly adopted felines.

If you adopted a new furry friend during the Maryland 2,000 at the MD SPCA, we'd love to see photos and receive Happy Tail updates. Please feel free to send them our way! Please email [email protected] for more information. THANK YOU!
