When we first start our self-sustaining journey, we considering a variety names for our little homestead. In the beginning, we were toying with the name 15 Oak Homestead because, well, we have 15 oak trees throughout our acre of land. I can't begin to tell you how much work those 15 oaks create in the fall when we have to mulch up leaves. Miss one weekend and it's HOURS of running our John Deere riding mower. That leads me to today's post. While the riding mower does the work in half the time, we discovered that small 22-inch push mower does a much better job when you have piles of leaves. You see, the riding mower blow mounds of mulched leaves across the yard. And at a certain point, you get so mulch that you can't even see the ground, which kills the grass. I say grass, but it's more like crab grass weeds and moss. That thick pile of mulch just suffocates it all and we wind up with a dirt yard. So, the past two weekends, we switch to using the push mower. The lower power leaves the mulch in the mower track rather than causing large carpets of grass killing mulch. Takes a bit longer, but it seems to do a much better job. So here's the question. What method do you use to mulch your leaves?
