So long cygnet! One of our adolescent swans is on their way to Oregon as part of a trumpeter swan restoration program led by the state’s Department of Natural Resources.

It is because of programs like this that the swan population has been successfully bolstered back up in their home ranges and we are proud to have been a part of this achievement!

Notice anything new? 🌳 We recently planted a massive new American sycamore tree standing at an impressive 35 feet tall! While not in the exact same spot as the old tree that used to reside in the Farmyard, its new location will provide tons of much-needed shade in the summer closer to the alpaca barn.

Get up to speed with the fastest big cat on International Cheetah Day. 🐆 Did you know that cheetahs can sprint at speeds of up to 70 mph? During a 20 second chase, their feet will barely touch the ground!

Today serves as a reminder that these incredible mammals are facing challenges. Currently listed as vulnerable, fewer than 12,500 cheetahs remain in the wild. By supporting the Zoo, you support conservation efforts on behalf of this amazing species.

Animal Architects: Engineering for Wildlife

Animal Architects: Engineering for Wildlife was a hit at Maryland STEM Festival 🛠️🐾 Participants took on the role of Zoo engineers, designing different enrichment for our animal ambassadors. Using problem-solving skills and hands-on creativity, everyone helped make engaging activities for the animals to enjoy! #mdstemfest2024

Talk about ruffling feathers! 🪶 Among all the animals grazing the African savanna, ostriches certainly stand out.

The grizzlies have officially settled in for hibernation! 🐻 After packing on the pounds this fall to sustain themselves throughout winter, the sisters are now resting behind the scenes. 😴 This season, Nova reached her highest weight yet at a whopping 662 lbs, while Nita hit an impressive 458 lbs!

Birds of a feather, chill together! ☀️😎 Rwen and Everest, the ground hornbill brothers, are soaking up the sun and struttin’ their stuff in the yard. These wingmen know how to enjoy their time together.

Julio the armadillo is on the hunt for Halloween fun as he explores the hay maze! 🎃 How fast will he find his way out? 🐾🍂

Ivy’s climbing game is strong! 💪🐵 Our youngest chimpanzee is working hard on her climbing structure, building strength and coordination one step at a time. At 4-months old, she’s well on her way to reaching new milestones and joining the troop.

There’s now a better way to roll your crew into the Zoo! After a decade of planning and a year of construction, we have completely overhauled our parking lot to provide a superior experience for guests, whether they arrive by car, bike, or on foot.
