Good news… the commemorative bricks are in!

Not as great news… the roots along the front of the park are too established to install them where we had hoped.

So the CCA Buy-A-Brick program team is meeting with our landscaper to discuss the best location/way to install them without harming the plants/trees.

Thanks to our Brick Team Volunteers and all those who bought a brick to help support the Friends of Canton Dog Park!

And, a big shoutout and thank you to our regular volunteers who are also aiding with the daily maintenance. We're aiming to get a meeting on the books in July. Stay tuned for info.

THANK YOU to the team of volunteers who installed the temporary fencing at the Friends of Canton Dog Park!!

This should allow room for the large dogs to play and keep them safe from the water that pools (and sometimes stagnates) after it rains.

We ask that large dogs (50 lbs+) remain in the LARGE DOG side of the park and that pup parents do not take their dogs into the SMALL DOG side of the park.

Thank you to all for your help and for your patience as we work to resolve the drainage issues.

DOG PARK LAKE UPDATE: Volunteers Needed
TEMPORARY FENCE INSTALL: 8.27.23 • 10 AM

The temporary fencing materials have been delivered! We are asking for volunteers to help us install the fencing on Sunday, August 27 at 10 am.

Please ask for Jayne or Megan when you get there. They will have the materials and the photos/map of where the fence should be installed to surround the "lake" at its largest. (Photos for reference.)

THANK YOU so much in advance for your support!!

As much as Gus enjoys the lake, it's got to go! Here's what is happening next.

DOG PARK UPDATE 8.15.23
Thanks to everyone who joined the Dog Park Community Meeting on August 1. It was great to meet everyone and hear your feedback.

The first step we are going to implement is a temporary fence around the “lake” in the large dog side of the park. This should alleviate 2 concerns 1.) large dogs can play safely in a dry area in the large dog side of the park and 2.) small dogs can continue to play safely in the small dog side of the park without large dogs needing to use that space.

If anyone is willing to volunteer to help install the fence, please comment in the thread or email us at [email protected]. The materials have been ordered, but we have not selected an install date yet. We will do so based on availability after we get a list of volunteers.

We also want to share that Dog Park Chair Jayne Miller is leading a dialog going with BCRP, DOT, DPW, Coppermine, and Councilmember Zeke Cohen’s office. Through this conversation, we have learned there may be greater concerns about water management on Toone Street and not just in the park. As we investigate and learn more from the City agencies we will share information about the long-term water drainage plan.

Thank you for your patience as we navigate this process.

Canton Dog Park “Lake” Update 7.27.23

Neighbors, thanks to your generosity, we raised $25k toward the upkeep of the park. That was amazing… now the hard part begins.

The process to rid the park of the lake has many moving parts.

• Design and develop a stormwater mitigation plan with local water mitigation engineer/project manager and general contractor - (almost finished)
• Source material and labor costs to create a comprehensive budget - (almost finished)
• Coordinate with the City on plan approval, permit requirements, and any necessary inspections
• Explore temporary options to make both sides of the park safe and operable until the permanent solution is implemented (to be discussed at the 8/1 meeting)

As many of you know the CCA is a volunteer-run 501-C nonprofit organization. This specific project is being completed by a small group of volunteers donating their time. A project of this size and complexity, which involves coordination with multiple vendors and government entities, may take several months. So we ask for your patience during this process. We aim to share a projected timeline when we have the moving parts in place.

We know this is challenging for park-goers and we share your frustration. While the team is working on the plan and eventual ex*****on, we ask for your understanding and that everyone please be respectful and kind to each other.

For neighbors interested in joining the volunteers with their efforts or learning more, we invite you to join Jayne Miller, CCA Board Member and Friends of Dog Park Chair, on Tuesday, August 1 at 9:00 am at the Canton Dog Park (3201 Toone St.) to hear an update about the developing "Lake" remediation plan. We will also discuss parkgoers' concerns and ways to safely navigate both sides of the park during this process. For those unable to attend, we hope to live feed on the Canton Community Association or Friends of Canton Dog Park FB page.

Lastly, the team is aiming for bi-weekly meetings and updates will be shared as we have them on our FB/IG, the CCA website, via the monthly CCA e-newsletter and e-blasts, and on the bulletin boards in O’Donnell Square Park and the Canton Dog Park.

If you have a question or suggestion, you can email [email protected].

Thanks for your patience and understanding as we work to save this valuable community resource.

– Friends of Canton Dog Park

PS: And, once again, thank you to all who donated and to the group of volunteers giving generously of their time for this extensive project!
