What is Kennel Cough, how can your dog catch it and how pet parents can try to protect their dogs?
Kennel Cough is a highly contagious illness that affects the upper respiratory tract in dogs. If not caught and treated in the early stages can lead to pneumonia and potentially become fatal.
Symptoms would include but not limited to sudden coughing/hacking almost like a honking sound, lethargy, fever, decreased appetite and in some cases abnormal breathing.
*your pet may not display all symptoms but the coughing is usually the first symptom*
Unfortunately, kennel cough is one of those illnesses that we would compare to a cold in humans. Therefore, you never know when it will hit. Dogs that visit high traffic places like boarding, dog parks, or any social place where dogs gather are at a higher risk to contract this illness.
No vaccine is 100% however, just like in human medicine vaccinating your dog can decrease the severity of the illness if they catch it and most importantly getting your pet to the vet asap. If diagnosed in the early stages, kennel cough is usually treated with antibiotics and cough suppressants.
Just as routine, your vet may offer a bordetella vaccine either once a year or every six months. This vaccine can be given as a injection , orally (not using a needle) or intra-nasal (squirt in the nose)
Call your vet and make sure your pup is up to date on Bordetella Vaccine!!
