Adotable Frenchie enjoyed his Dog's Day Out adventure last week!

"Had a great day out with Frenchie! We had lunch at Kooper's Tavern and Frenchie had great restaurant manners. He sat calmly and enjoyed a burger on the outdoor patio. Then we took a walk around Fells Point. Frenchie was excited to see the ducks, but he was very polite and didn't try to chase them. An incredibly sweet boy and a fun lunch date!"

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, BARCS has been able to provide medical care to hundreds of animals each year through the Franky Fund. A pivotal factor in achieving this has been our partnerships with local veterinary hospitals and clinics. BARCS is so grateful for these partnerships, as they play a significant role in saving the lives of thousands of homeless shelter animals in need of emergency and specialized medical attention.

This week, our heartfelt thanks go out to the wonderful team at Liberty Animal Clinic. The care provided by the LAC team has touched the lives of countless BARCS animals, including Twinkletoes, who received urgent treatment, all made possible by the incredible generosity of our amazing Franky Fund partner.

Sweet 6-month-old Twinkletoes was found injured and alone on the streets before being taken to a Franky Fund partner and brought to BARCS. Upon her initial veterinary intake, it was noted that her left hind leg was lame, with a swollen hock and a palpable bone abnormality, suggesting a leg fracture. Despite her discomfort, Twinkletoes was a sweet patient, receiving pain medication to keep her comfortable and antibiotics to prevent infection. After careful consideration, it was decided that transferring her to our amazing Franky Fund partner for further assessment and care was the best path forward.

Once under the care of the LAC team, Twinkletoes' fracture was confirmed, and due to its severity, amputation surgery was needed to restore her quality of life. Throughout the process, she remained an excellent patient, and the surgery was a success. After her recovery, Twinkletoes returned to BARCS, ready for the next chapter in her journey.

Back at the shelter, Twinkletoes continued her recovery with her usual sweetness. It didnā€™t take long for her to find a loving home, and we couldnā€™t be happier for her! Wishing the best to Twinkletoes and her new family!

Thank you to Liberty Animal Clinic for all of the love and care you give to the BARCS animals who come through your doors!

We would not be able to do what we do without themā€”and without YOU, our Franky Fund donors. This program relies completely on private donations. Please help us always be ready to save animals like Twinkletoes by giving to our Franky Fund.

**DOUBLE YOUR DONATION: PCI Service Company has Pledged $25,000 for an Emergency Match to BARCS through 3/12**

Earlier this week, Baltimore City Animal Control officers brought a sweet 1.5-year-old pup named Brock to BARCS. Brock was found all alone in the basement of his home. As we later learned, his beloved owner had sadly passed away two weeks prior to his being found.

This little pup was emaciated, dehydrated, had pressure sores on his body, and was diagnosed with a heart murmur. With his frail body weighing just 27 pounds, his spine and ribs are visible beneath his skin. Poor Brock was immediately provided with medication, a soothing bath, and a safe feeding plan to help him begin to gain weight and heal.

The first thing you notice about Brock, besides his bony frame, is how happy-go-lucky he seems. When staff or volunteers approach his kennel door, he is wiggly and excited like a puppy should be. He was quickly moved into an office here at the shelter to be more comfortable, and he decided that heā€™d rather curl up as small as possible in a staff memberā€™s lap than lay on his comfy memory foam bed. Despite everything he has been through, Brock exudes love and affection. Fortunately, he is now receiving his treatment in the comfort of a loving foster home, where he can cuddle to his heartā€™s desire.

Critical medical care for our animals is the largest portion of the BARCS budget. Itā€™s where funding for our shelter is always greatly needed. With increased donations, we can save more and more animalsā€”which is why they need you.

Our friends at PCI Service Company, a division of Power and Combustion Incorporated, want to make sure that animals' needs are met. To support our lifesaving mission, they have generously pledged an emergency match for all donations, dollar-for-dollar up to $25,000 through March 12.

Your gift today of $10, $20, $50 or whatever you can comfortably afford will give a homeless animal like Brock a second chance so that they never live another day without medical care, shelter and, most importantly, love.

We are thrilled to announce that as of today, March 4, 2025, BARCS is resuming normal operations. Thank you to everyone who supported us through this challenging periodā€”we are so grateful for our community.

šŸ¾ To our fellow shelters, rescue groups, and community members: Your teamwork and willingness to help out ensured we could divert some intakes and contain the spread of illness while still helping animals in need. The way everyone came together during this challenging time was a powerful reminder that when we unite and collaborate, we can make an even greater impact for animal welfare.

šŸ¾ To Betsy Sherman, the Sherman Family Foundation, and our generous donors: Your emergency matching donation pledge to our Medical Care Fund, made immediately upon our quarantine announcement, provided lifesaving support. And to everyone who donated, thank you for helping us cover the added costs of care, testing, and medical supplies, ensuring we could continue to provide the best care possible.

šŸ¾ To our staff and volunteers: Your unwavering dedication, adaptability, and compassion are the backbone of our operations. Through ever-changing protocols, you ensured that every animal received the care and treatment necessary while also protecting the health of the animals we still needed to take in. Your hard workā€”and big heartsā€”kept BARCS going strong.

With your support, we are back to serving animals and families at full capacity. Thank you for standing by usā€”Baltimore's animals are lucky to have such a compassionate and dedicated community!

Meet Seven, an adoptable BARCS VIP with a big heart and an even bigger love for fun! Whether itā€™s playing fetch or snuggling up, heā€™s always up for a good time. Letā€™s hear what Seven has to say!

šŸ¶Seven, how have people described you?
- People have described me as friendly yet independent. Iā€™m food-driven, which makes training a breeze, and Iā€™m always eager to learn. Iā€™m super attentive, so Iā€™m the perfect partner for teaching tricks or heading out on a hike!

āHave you got any house skills?
- Yep, Iā€™ve got the basics down! Iā€™m housebroken and totally fine being kenneled or crated when necessary.

šŸ•Seven, how would you describe yourself on walks?
- On walks, Iā€™m a pretty good leash walker! I might get a little excited when I see other animals, but with a little redirection, Iā€™m back to focusing on my walk in no time!

šŸŽ‰Seven, whatā€™s your idea of a good time?
- A good time for me? Definitely chewing on tough rubber toys, chasing after a ball, and getting some tasty treatsā€”Beggin' Strips are my favorite, but I wonā€™t say no to a little table scrap now and then!

šŸ”What kind of home do you think would be the best fit for you?
- Iā€™d do best in a calm, structured home where I can feel secure. Iā€™m an active, loving guy who loves to get plenty of exercise and affection. With a little patience, Iā€™ll be a loyal and loving addition to any family!

šŸžļøWe heard you had a Dogs Day Outā€”how did it go?
- I had an awesome Dogs Day Out at Patterson Park! Playing fetch was definitely the highlightā€”I was full of energy, super friendly, and had a blast. I know a few commands like ā€œsitā€ and ā€œpaw,ā€ but when itā€™s time to relax, Iā€™m all about snuggling with my humans. I had an amazing time and Iā€™m ready for more adventures outside the shelter!

šŸ¾How do you get along with other pups?
- I get along really well with other pups! Iā€™ve lived with dogs before. Iā€™m super social and enjoy playing, so Iā€™m always up for some fun with my dog friends at the shelter. Iā€™d love to meet some new doggie roommates!

Seven is a BARCS VIP, which means his adoption fees are always waived! To learn more about his personality and needs, check out his VIP profile by clicking the Linktree in our bio!

**Just Announced: PCI Service Company Has Pledged $25,000 to Match Donations to BARCS**

At BARCS, the health and wellbeing of our animals is our number one priority. Every single homeless, abused, neglected, or surrendered animal that enters our doors receives a medical examination and a care plan to ensure they stay as healthy as possible for the duration of their time with us. Some animals need nothing more than routine vaccinations, but others may need round-the-clock, dedicated medical care before they find a home.

On Valentineā€™s Day, sweet 4-month-old Chino Cappuccino arrived at BARCS needing urgent medical care. His left eye was visibly injuredā€“it was bulging, discolored, and swollen with thick discharge. Upon further examination, it was evident that his eye was beyond saving and would need to be removed. Our veterinary team shifted their schedule to perform an enucleation in-shelter for little Chino on the same day as his arrival. This surgery was crucial to prevent further infection and pain and help him recover as quickly as possible.

Chino is an incredibly resilient puppy; he is full of life, love, and boundless energy despite his rough start. He is currently residing in a foster home where he romps and plays with his foster siblings. He already has an interested adopter, and we are sure that heā€™ll be heading home with a wonderful family soon. But, he is just one of the many animals in need we see everyday, and we cannot continue to save lives like Chinoā€™s without the help of generous, big-hearted friends like you.

Please consider donating to aid the homeless animals of Baltimore City who, like Chino, are in need. With your help, we can provide shelter, care and love, making a meaningful difference in their lives.

Critical medical care for our animals is the largest portion of the BARCS budget. Itā€™s where funding for our shelter is always greatly needed. With increased donations, we can save more and more animalsā€”which is why they need you.

This week, our heartfelt thanks go out to the wonderful team at Anne Arundel Veterinary Hospital. The care provided by the AAVH team has touched the lives of countless BARCS animals, including Penne, who received urgent treatment, all made possible by the incredible generosity of our amazing Franky Fund partner.

Penne came to BARCS through no fault of her own, along with her kitty siblings. During her intake medical evaluation, our veterinary team discovered she had dental disease, gingivitis, and gum recession. Her molars and premolars were especially affectedā€”worn, stained, and covered in tartarā€”causing her discomfort and impacting her quality of life. To prevent further complications, Penne needed urgent care. She was sent to our Franky Fund partner for a much-needed dental procedureā€”one that would relieve her discomfort and help her feel so much better.

Once under the care of the AAVH team, Penne underwent a dental procedure to treat her remaining salvageable teeth and had the rotten ones extracted. The procedure required sutures to address deep, decayed tooth cavities. Afterward, Penne was reported to be a sweet girlā€”and it was clear she was feeling much better!

Once back at BARCS, Penne recovered well, and when she was ready for a loving home, things got even betterā€”she found one! This sweet kitty now has her very own Happy Tail, and we couldnā€™t be happier for her!

Thank you to Anne Arundel Veterinary Hospital for all of the love and care you give to the BARCS animals who come through your doors!

We would not be able to do what we do without themā€”and without YOU, our Franky Fund donors. This program relies completely on private donations. Please help us always be ready to save animals like Penne by giving to our Franky Fund.

Meet adoptable Sā€™mores and Snowflake, the sweetest bunny duo you never knew you needed! These two boys are ready to hop straight into your heart with their affectionate, sweet, and friendly personalities. Both came to BARCS through no fault of their own, and though they've warmed up to the TLC from our volunteers and staff, what they truly want is a loving home to call their own. If you're looking for the softest, fluffiest, and most social bunnies around, come meet Sā€™mores and Snowflake at BARCSā€”they're ready to fill your heart with love!

Here are some tidbits about Sā€™moreā€™s and Snowflake:

šŸ°Sā€™moreā€™s is 3 years old, 8 lbs.

šŸ°Snowflake is 9 years old, 3 lbs.

ā¤ļøBoth Sā€™mores and Snowflake are affectionate, social bunnies who warm up quickly to gentle introductions. They truly enjoy the company of others and love receiving gentle head pets.

šŸ’•Snowflake is like a fluffy little cloud, always ready for a gentle head pet. Heā€™s calm, sweet, and not too shyā€”just curious enough to stay close and keep you company.

šŸ§¶Sā€™moreā€™s and Snowflake have a playful streak and love to keep busyā€”hopping around and tossing their toys.

šŸ”Sā€™mores is a big, gentle guy with a calm demeanor who loves pets and scritches. Heā€™d be thrilled to have some space to roam and would do well in a home with kids! Snowflake has also spent time with kids and done great.

šŸ¶Both bunnies have previously been around small dogs.

šŸ‡Snowflakeā€™s soft coat does need some grooming, but heā€™s quite tolerant and will be so grateful for the extra attention you give him to keep it looking its best.

Have S'more's and Snowflake caught your eye? Come meet them at the Littles Lodge at BARCSā€”their adoption fees are always waived!

BARCS is located at 2490 Giles Rd, with adoption hours available Monday to Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Meet Frenchie (Tex), an adoptable BARCS VIP! This gentle boy is all about finding the coziest spot at home, soaking up your love, and playing with his favorite toys. Heā€™s ready to find a loving home and has a few things heā€™d like to share. Letā€™s hear from Frenchie (Tex) himself!

šŸ¶Frenchie, can you tell us a little about your personality?
- Iā€™m a laid-back guy who finds joy in the little thingsā€”wagging my tail when you walk in, curling up in my favorite spot, and enjoying peaceful naps and easy-going walks. Iā€™ve been described as affectionate, gentle, independent, and sometimes playful. I love my independence, but Iā€™m always up for a gentle pet or a stroll with you.

šŸ”What are you like at home?
- Iā€™m housetrained and independent, but Iā€™m also a big cuddle bug. I love lounging in my pet bed, yet Iā€™m always happy to be near you, soaking up gentle pets and snuggles whenever the moment feels right. In my foster home, I was a polite guestā€”I gently pawed at the door when I needed to go outside and slept soundly through the night without a crate. I never chewed on anything and patiently waited by the table, never begging for food.

šŸ•Frenchie, How are your leash skills when you're out and about?
- Iā€™m pretty laid-back, but I get excited when itā€™s walk time! I might pull on the leash at first, but with a little redirection, I settle into a nice steady pace.

šŸ„ŽWeā€™ve heard youā€™ve got a playful sideā€”wanna tell us about it?
- Every now and then, I get a burst of energyā€”I'll grab a tennis ball for a quick game, then happily curl up in my favorite spot to relax.

šŸ¾Frenchie, how do you feel about having doggie roommates?
- Iā€™m not comfortable around other pups, so Iā€™d do best as the only dog in the home.

Please enjoy this heartwarming Happy Tail update on Tilly (FKA Mahi Mahi) ā¤

"I never wanted a pittie. Iā€™m more of a Jack Russell, King Charles spaniel guy. My current dog has terminal cancer, and I wasnā€™t ready to adopt. But when this baby was returned by her adopter for not being housetrained, I was lucky enough to see a wonderful volunteer bringing her back in to be processed. And we just had to sn**ch her up. Sure, we are still working on house training and some manners, but hellā€¦ she is the most gentle, affectionate, loving dog. Our littlest has Down Syndrome and she is so patient with him. He pets and pets her until she falls asleep on him. She loves every person and every dog she meets. People pull their cars over to admire her.

"She is Tilly, our precious pocket pittie, teacup staffie, beloved pygmy house hippo. Main pic was the day we brought her home - she was pretty sick at the time (we got full info about it), and had undiagnosed epilepsy, had been returned an hour before by someone who was not nice to her at the surrender appointment. But here she was. Too tired and sad to make it down three stairs. But pulled out enough energy to lick my face when I sat next to her. Get a BARCS dog."

With her sweet nature and impressive skills, sheā€™s ready to show you just how great she can be!

This week, our heartfelt thanks go out to the wonderful team at Pet+E.R. Hunt Valley. The care provided by the PET+ ER HV team has touched the lives of countless BARCS animals, including JhonJhon, who received urgent treatment, all made possible by the incredible generosity of our amazing Franky Fund partner.

Sweet Jhonjhonā€™s life changed in an instant when Baltimore City Fire Department firefighters found her unconscious in a house fire. Refusing to give up on her, they resuscitated Jhonjhon, and once she started breathing again, she was rushed to BARCS for urgent medical care. Our veterinary team found her breathing seemingly normal, but she had eye discharge, sneezing, coughing, and fur soaked in a strong smoke odor. She was bathed, given lubricating drops for her eyes, and placed near a nebulizer to help her breathe more comfortably. It was then determined that Jhonjhon needed specialized smoke inhalation treatment, and she was transferred to our incredible Franky Fund partner for continued care.

Once in the care of the PET+ ER HV team, JhonJhon was closely monitored to ensure her recovery. She was treated with eye antibiotic ointment to soothe her irritated eyes and given pain medication to keep her comfortable as she rested. Bloodwork and x-rays were performed to get a clearer picture of her condition, which revealed mild airway inflammation. To help her breathe more easily, she was provided with supplemental oxygen. Once she was stable enough to be safely discharged, JhonJhon came back to BARCS, with a treatment plan to help her fully recover from her ordeal.

It didnā€™t take long for JhonJhon to settle into a loving foster home, where she received the rest and TLC she needed to recover. As the days went on, her health improved, but it wasnā€™t just her body that healedā€”her sweet nature and charm made her the perfect houseguest. Eventually, JhonJhonā€™s journey led her to the best possible ending: a loving home of her very own. Weā€™re thrilled to share that JhonJhon was adopted!

Thank you to Pet ER+ Hunt Valley for your prompt aid of an animal in need and for all of the love and care you give to the BARCS animals who come through your doors!

Hi! Iā€™m Tizzy, an adoptable good girl pup who came to BARCS in August 2024. Iā€™ve been patiently waiting to be adopted, but the humans say Iā€™m one of the longest-term dogs hereā€”can you believe that? Have you seen my photos? Iā€™m pretty adorable, if I do say so myself! The amazing folks helping me find a loving home think so too. My start wasnā€™t easyā€”I was found in a yard with no shelter or waterā€”but Iā€™m thriving now, thanks to my loving foster family. Iā€™ve mastered potty training and blossomed into a sweet, well-mannered companion. I love snuggles, belly rubs, and exploring the yard, but honestly? Nothing beats being by your side, sharing all the love Iā€™ve got.

Iā€™ve really settled into a routine with my foster family and learned so much.Iā€™m a quick learner, polite at mealtime, and I get along with all my dog housemates. Iā€™m even pretty good at playing with two balls at onceā€”how cool is that? Iā€™m all about those bedtime snuggles, especially if I can curl up with you like a lap dog. And bath time? Bring it on! Iā€™ll happily let you towel me off afterward and cuddle up.

If I havenā€™t won you over yet, thereā€™s more to my skill set! Iā€™m crate-trained, get along with other large dogs, and love car rides. Iā€™m also attentive and check in with you as we walk, just to make sure weā€™re in sync. My spirit is strong, and I canā€™t wait to be your best friend. Iā€™m a loving, playful pup, and I canā€™t wait to share all my joy with you!

PS: I'm a BARCS VIP, which means my adoption fees are always waived!

Hi there, Iā€™m Emmy! And I donā€™t know if you can tells, but today is my 3rd birfday šŸ„³ My foster mom says Iā€™m the most perfect angel baby and is showering me with treats and toys today butā€¦all I really want is a family of my very own. I was hoping today was my going home pawty instead.

I may look pouty with my perma-frowny lippies, but Iā€™m actually happy and playful and I know lots of tricks and I promise Iā€™ll try my hardest to be the bestest girl for you. BARCS people, can you pls share with everyone your favorite things about me? Iā€™m one of the pups who has been with BARCS the longest now and my only wish is to spend next yearā€™s birfday in a cozy bed with my family.
