Landsdrop Ranch Fjord Horses

Landsdrop Ranch Fjord Horses Landsdrop Ranch is home to top caliber Fjord Horses, including our German-imported white dun stallion, Bastian Vom Oderhaff (NFHR Blue Evaluation Score).
(5)

Texas needs Fjord Horses! Landsdrop Ranch has brought in top-quality bloodlines from Germany (by way of Canada), Montana, and Michigan. Why Fjords? These horses come from ancient, hardy stock. They have the nice draft horse type disposition, but are short enough that they are less intimidating. A medium or draft-built Fjord can carry almost any size rider, but seem to be ultra-careful around child

ren. They can handle the heat, when properly acclimated, and, like ponies, are easy keepers, which means they require less hay/grain (typically). The breed registry (NFHR) doesn't allow them to be cross-bred, so they retain these excellent characteristics. Many Fjords live into their 30's and are sound and healthy much longer than most horses.

From last year’s San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo - the closing roundup on local news station KENS5 - Watch and you can see Baily (Trinity’s Baily) twice in this video. Sorry for the poor quality, we were surprised to see her on the TV. She represented the fjord breed well, though.

I love updates about Percy (formerly known as Haplo). This is a Friesian/Percheron cross I bred before I got into fjords. He’s found such a great home as a vaulting horse. 🥰 I still miss him, though.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

While Bastian Vom Oderhaff doesn’t have his mane perfectly trimmed here, he’s still so beautiful it amazes me that he’s mine and that he’s been with me for about 8 years now.

Fjord stallion forelocks are never cut, but his natural lifestyle with his mares and foals keeps it a little shorter than it might be if he were kept in a stall. This way you can see his gorgeous soft expression and how kind and sweet he is.

I hope your holidays are happy and blessed and that 2024 brings you hope, joy, and peace.

Looking for the perfect present for the fjord lover in your life? Or yourself? I have two fillies available to just the right homes. First is Nisse.

Landsdrop Nisse (registration pending) is an outstanding brown dun fjord filly out of PF Gra Violet by Bastian Vom Oderhaff. Born 3/20/2023. She is weaned and available to the right home. This is a repeat breeding and I’ve retained her full sister Tiril and have been super tempted to keep Nisse as well, but I keep my herd small.

Nisse is a treasure and so sweet. She just wants to be with people and she will be one that will say “yes” if you’re looking for a partner or a BFF. She follows me around and requests nose kisses first thing each day, so her ideal person would be someone who enjoys a curious and happy horse.

This pairing has produced Jordan Hughey’s stallion Landsdrop Nyx and Landsdrop Tiril, who is my keeper. The person who was going to buy her has her full sister Landsdrop Vegvisir, but it didn’t end up being the right time…so this special filly is available - and it’s possible to see what she is likely to mature to look like. She should be over 14hh, but within breed standard. Her build is going to be moderate to drafty, with enough substance to be a very typey fjord but the athleticism and attitude to do anything her new owner might like to do - dressage, working equitation, competitive trail, not-so-competitive trail. She also would be a fantastic addition to any quality fjord breeding program.

Brown dun with sharp dark black primitive markings, can produce gray with the right stallion. She has not been tested to determine if she can produce red.

Conformationally correct, beautiful head, should mature to moderate-to-drafty build. Sweet, smart, bold, friendly. Handled daily.

Both sire and dam have outstanding dispositions and this young mare will be an amazing partner - happy and cooperative.

Bastian Vom Oderhaff (imported/evaluated stallion) x PF Gra Violet.

Available to the enrich the life of just the right person. 😊 PM for more info.

About her sire: Bastian Vom Oderhaff scored 83/100 and earned a Canadian Red/US Blue ribbon for conformation. Breed Type is crucial for Fjords – it evaluates presence, attitude, personality, substance of bone, and gender expression (masculinity). He scored an 8.75/10. During a 2006 Fjord Horse International (FHI) Board of Directors meeting at Eike and Suzanne Schoen-Petersen's farm (Oderhaff) in Germany, Brian and Ursula Jensen took a tour and saw Bastian, a weanling who won best Fjord foal in his state in 2005. Brian Jensen, an NFHR evaluator, persuaded Eike and Suzanne to sell him. In March 2007, Bastian arrived in Canada. In 2015, Bastian was sold to Kelly White and imported to Texas, USA. Bastian is 14.1 hands, moderate build. He’s a quiet, well-mannered stallion trained to drive and ride. Eva Oldenbroek-Tabor, a USDF gold medalist, trained him in dressage and he scored exceptionally well with limited showing. Bastian's disposition is unrivaled. He's sweet and trustworthy. Under saddle, he adjusts his energy to his rider's skill level. He lives in a family herd with mares and foals. His progeny are willing, curious, and friendly. They’re keepers and heart horses. To meet Bastian is to fall in love with horses all over again.

Bastian has competed in USDF recognized and schooling shows, garnering high scores, championship ribbons, and a fan club. He's participated in Equine Liberty clinics, mounted archery, and helped a troop of Girl Scouts earn their horsemanship badges.

Landsdrop Stjerne (registration pending) is a stunning gray dun fjord c**t out of Prairie Home Fjords Kate by Bastian Vom Oderhaff. Born 9/1/2022. He is available to the right person upon weaning, which will likely be in February 2023.

Kate, his dam, foaled earlier than expected, so I wasn’t there for his birth, but when I came close enough for him to see me he whinnied at me and walked right up for me to scratch him. And that has been how he meets every human so far. He’s bold but not obnoxious, sweet, friendly, outgoing, and absolutely gorgeous. When you leave him, he whinnies to you to come back, but if you can’t stay all day to scratch him he doesn’t get depressed or anxious about it. He will bond deeply with his new person.

Stjerne will be about average height for the breed, and will have a sturdy build - probably moderate to drafty (honestly my favorite style). He’ll still be plenty athletic and capable for any sport or activities. Want to do some dressage when he matures? Working equitation? Competitive trail or not-so-competitive trail? Drive? Mounted archery? He will be up for the adventure.

At weaning, he’ll know all age appropriate skills (lead, load, trailer, tie, etc.). He has already been clipped, loaded into a trailer several times, ridden in the trailer.

Color shouldn’t be the first thing to consider when buying a horse, but if you can get everything on your wishlist plus stunning gray dun with sharp dark black primitive markings - why not have fancy color, too?

Stjerne (Norwegian word for “star”) got his name from the whorl of hair on his forehead that looks like a black star. He has no white markings. I couldn’t call him Sparkle Pony forever.

Conformationally correct, beautiful head, should mature to moderate-to-drafty build, great bone. Sweet, smart, bold, friendly. Handled frequently.

Both sire and dam have outstanding dispositions and this young c**t will be an amazing partner - happy and cooperative.

He's participated in Equine Liberty clinics, mounted archery, and helped a troop of Girl Scouts earn their horsemanship badges. Bastian has also stood at stud temporarily at several fjord farms around the US, and this is only possible because he is easy to handle and does not required experienced stallion handlers. He has sired foals for farms in Canada, Montana, Ohio, and Wisconsin (and Texas, of course).

About his dam: Prairie Home Fjords Kate is mare that was brought here to breed to Bastian a few years ago. I enjoyed having her so much I asked her owners to tell me first if they ever considered selling her - and they did. She’s a fun mare, great sense of humor. She is on the shorter side and has drafty build and a beautiful head and a lot of swagger. She has been ridden by her previous owner and children.

SOLD to Minnesota. Landsdrop Vegvisir (“VV”) is the first filly that I bred from my stallion, Bastian, that is available to the perfect situation. She’s now a yearling and I’ve enjoyed every minute of her first year and honestly am in no hurry to part with her, but I’ve kept her older full sister so she really should be someone else’s treasure.

This is a filly that is the first to meet me when I come outside and will follow me everywhere, even far from the herd. First to show up, last to leave. This is the kind of filly that will bond deeply with her own person and would probably walk through fire for the right person (though the right person would never ask).

She’s going to be on the tall side for the breed, 14+ hands. She has the movement and athleticism for any endeavor - dressage, working equitation, competitive trail, not-so-competitive trail, she’s game.

Knows all age appropriate skills (haltering, leads, loads, ties). Was clipped the day she was born due to extreme heat in Texas and loves being clipped.

Brown dun with sharp dark black primitive markings, can produce gray with the right stallion. Conformationally correct, beautiful head, should mature to moderate-to-drafty build. Sweet, smart, bold, friendly. Handled frequently.

Both sire and dam have outstanding dispositions and this young mare will be an amazing partner - happy and cooperative.

She was under contract with a payment plan and the only reason she’s available now is that the I decided to part with a young mare closer to riding age, so VV’s buyer opted for a mare that was old enough to start riding training.

SALE PENDING. Unicorn alert! From Bastian Vom Oderhaff’s trip to Wisconsin last year, one special filly is looking for a new home. The only reason is because Kelly Kabele McGinley couldn’t keep them all and she is keeping the other two of the three fillies! People don’t part with these foals often.

Rare white dun - with the conformation and disposition to be your performance and breeding prospect. PM Kelly (the other Kelly) for more information.

In the spring foal season, Bastian Vom Oderhaff has several foals on the ground in Wisconsin at Whispering Winds Fjords, but for his home in Texas we have only one this spring...so he really made this one count.

Landsdrop Vegvisir (“V”) is destined for great things. This filly foal (Bastian Vom Oderhaff x PF Gra Violet) is possibly the sweetest horse I have met in my life and she’s only 9 days old. She is brave and athletic and absolutely beautiful. She’s also partially clipped and muddy at the moment, but that doesn’t detract in the slightest.

More photos to come. She may be available to the right home.

Bastian is on his way to Wisconsin. He left this afternoon. The haulers enjoyed a few minutes with the babies while I led Bastian to their trailer. I handed off the lead for them to load them and he never even hesitated. I think Kelly Kabele McGinley is impatiently waiting for him on the other side of the country.

Let’s Rodeo San Antonio! In just a few weeks, I’ll be taking fjords to represent the breed and my farm at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo’s Horse Discovery exhibit.

Every year, more than two MILLION people attend the stock show, and this is a great educational “scratch and sniff” experience for kids and adults alike.

You can help vote (in the comments) for the fjords that will represent the breed. There are no bad choices. 😉

* I should add there are a few others who aren’t contenders to go because I don’t want to take pregnant mares or babies and stallions are not allowed.

Today I put Bastian and his babies, Tiril and Sigyn, in the arena to move them around and get a few videos and pictures. Tiril worked on her canter pirouettes, and Sigyn ran as fast as she could. Bastian hung out grazing and unimpressed until I asked him to do something. Which is one of many reasons why I love this stallion. Reasons two and three are these fillies!!!

P.s. - if you’re looking for a Bastian foal of your own, Gambler Acres Fjord Horses has two pretty girls for sale.

My friend Hilary Davies Shelby took this photo of Tiril, and it really captures her impish charm.

I actually got some saddle time in today. The babies both thought they were supposed to follow Annie as I rode. Tiril went in the arena so we took advantage of the opportunity to get some pictures and videos of her moving around and playing with my brother.

* obligatory foal safety disclaimer: running with foals is a good way to get kicked if they don’t respect your space. Tiril was careful to maintain a safe distance while she ran, but I wouldn’t recommend trying this with many babies.

06/13/2019

I absolutely love the fillies that Bastian sired this year. They are both beautiful and brave and sweet and love people. They embody the fjord type and temperament I’m breeding for and they should be able to do anything when they grow up. They also happen to be unusual colors. I decided to color test them both and they are unicorns.

Sigyn was confirmed as a yellow dun who also carries gray. Tiril is a smoky gray dun (a gray dun with the cream gene - so gray/white, but in other breeds would be considered a smoky grulla) and also carries red. So both girls can produce any color when paired with the right stallion.

Breeding just for color, as for any single trait (height, fancy movement, etc) is discouraged, and rightfully so. Grays and white duns will soon be common enough that they’ll sell at comparable prices to brown duns of similar quality...so I’m just saying I’d be happy with these girls no matter their color. And while I’m keeping these two, Bastian has five foals expected in the next few months in Ohio at Gambler Acres Fjord Horses - and those should be for sale.

On Sunday, Landsdrop Ranch Fjord Horses hosted a troop of Girl Scouts working on their Horse Riding badge. There were more girls than my usual beginner friendly TUF Annie could handle, so I enlisted my stallion, Bastian vom Oderhaff.

Both horses were absolutely stellar. They gave the girls confidence and I was so proud of them. Bastian, though, always seems to know to be gentle with kids and foals and performed perfectly - even if he’d been a gelding and not a breeding stallion with a mare in heat just waiting for the girls to go home. 😜

This is the Fjord temperament I want and am working to produce.

We are thrilled to welcome our first 2019 foal. Today Gretchen of Zion (a Blitzen daughter) gave birth to a filly by Bastian Vom Oderhaff.

This baby looks to be either a red dun or a yellow dun, because she is very pale and I don’t see any black hairs on her (she is still wet and was born in the pasture- so has some dirt). DNA testing will tell for sure. Regardless of color, she should be a stellar Fjord.

12/28/2018

Our 2018 Fjord babies have all found great new homes...if you’re still looking, though, Gambler Acres Fjord Horses has two really nice fillies out of blue evaluated stallions - one by Drift, another by Ulend. Check them out.
