The 12 Dogs of Christmas
#1 (drumroll please) The All-American Mutt
Meet Sweetie the Schnoodle, China the Chow mix, Riley, Dash and Milo the Heeler x Dachshund brothers, Betty the Greyhound mix, and Willie the Heinz 57 mighty mix.
What can I say about mixed breeds? They are uniquely individual. Depending on the mix some can display natural behaviors of some of the purebred parentage such as a high prey drive, pointing, herding, nipping, or trailing, to name a few. Overall, they are healthier as many genetic health problems common to purebreds can be eliminated with a crossbreed, thus helping them to live longer. Consider this: shelters and rescues are overflowing with these unique, adorable, one-of-a-kind dogs that make the best pets ever. Adopting a mix breed is so rewarding and offers people and families the most wonderful family addition. Loyal, loving, affectionate, and just the best overall dogs. Visit your local shelter in person or online and see what one-of-a-kind dog awaits you. Always spay and neuter to help control the pet overpopulation problem, be a forever home committed to the lifetime of the dog, keep current ID/microchips on your dogs, and adopt don't shop. Merry Christmas. See you next year.

The 12 Dogs of Christmas
#2 Some Lesser known ancient breeds
Meet Zoe, Louis (before his bath), Mugsy, Ginger, and Hope
Bernese Mountain Dog: A working breed brought to Switzerland over 2,000 years ago by invading Romans. In the 1850s they were used as "cheese dogs" delivering dairy products door to door by pulling small carts.
Samoyed: Sammies can be traced back to 1000 BCE and have remained largely unchanged. Their name comes from the Samoyede nomadic tribe of people that lived in the tundra region of northern Russia and Siberia, near the Arctic Circle. A Spitz breed, they were used for pulling sleds and herding reindeer.
Olde English Bulldogge: These bulldogs are taller, with straighter legs and a longer snout than their smaller counterparts. Originating in England between 1600 and 1700, they were used for the English blood sport of bull baiting, that was later outlawed in the 1860s.
Pekingese: Having ancient roots in China, they are traced back to the Tang Dynasty 8th century AD. Known as "little lion dogs," Pekes belonged to Chinese Emperors and were highly esteemed by Royalty. They were even hidden in the sleeves of the Emperor's robe for protection.
Borzoi: Also known as the Russian Wolfhound, they originated in 17th century Russia and were a popular breed to Russian Tzars before the 1917 revolution. Used to hunt wolves, they were beloved by the Russian Imperial Romanov family. "Borzoi" is a Russian term meaning "swift" or "fast."

The 12 Dogs of Christmas
#3 The Spaniels
Meet Ted (Springer), Spencer (Cocker), Teddy (Springer x Cocker), and Bogart (Cavalier King Charles)
Altogether, there are 15 different types of Spaniel breeds. Here are just a few.
English Springer Spaniel: named for their ability to find birds hiding in thick brush and “spring” them out of hiding, they were traditionally used for flushing and retrieving game birds. Springers can be traced back to 1812.
Cocker Spaniel: The Cocker's ancestry goes back to ancient spaniels and have been around for over 600 years. Their name comes from their skill in hunting woodcocks.
Both the springer spaniel and the cocker spaniel can trace their histories back to Spain. Both are "land" retrievers, as opposed to "water."
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Originally known as the King Charles Spaniel, they are thought to have come to Europe from Japan during the early 16th century, probably as a Royal gift. They are named after King Charles II and were originally bred as lap dogs for the aristocracy.
