You may have heard that Save This Life, a Texas-based microchip and registration company, is no longer in business. Don't worry! If you adopted a pet from the Bangor Humane Society, you're all set. BHS uses 24PetWatch microchips, so your pet's microchip is secure.
How to check your pet’s microchip:
If your pet’s microchip number starts with 991 or 900164, it is a Save This Life microchip. While these microchips still work, you’ll need to register them with another provider to ensure your pet’s information stays up-to-date.

Helping Hailley celebrate her 7th birthday was an absolute blast! First, she and her human, James, brought lunch for our staff, which was generously donated by Office - Re/Max Collaborative, then MP Turner Real Estate and Bangor Team-Treworgy & Baldacci Real Estate Closing Services brought us donations topped with chocolate-covered strawberries! Several of Hailley's friends and family dropped in to bring donations and wish her a happy birthday, and the day ended in celebration of 6 animals finding their fur-ever homes, generously sponsored by Hailley's dad, James Spear - Re/max Collaborative . That makes over 40 adoptions Hailley has sponsored over the last 4 years, which is AMAZING!! All in all, a pretty fantastic day!

It's LOVE month! And we would LOVE to fill the halls of BHS with expressions of YOUR love for the animals we're all so committed to helping each and every day. Maybe there's a pet here whose progress you've been watching closely. Maybe you adopted an animal from us, or maybe you just LOVE animals and want to do anything you can to help. For a donation of $5 (or more!), you can dedicate a heart that will line the walls the week of Valentine's Day, then make a comment so we know what you want us to write on it, and then stop in to admire it and maybe make a new best friend.

Tomorrow is National Inspire Your Heart with Art Day. We know we're a day early, but we couldn't wait to share that today we received a box filled with these handmade treasures from Nancy's Bags, which are all Made In Maine. She sent over a few handbags and wine bags, which we will have on sale here at the shelter, along with some beautifully quilted cat mats and catnip "kickers", which we will offer to our own cats and send home with a few lucky adopters.

Her heart is inspired by rescuing animals, and her art reflects that so beautifully. Thank you, Nancy, for this generous donation and for finding a way to make your two passions work together. Consider us inspired!

Central Maine Harley-Davidson is hosting their 2nd Annual SuPAW Bowl fundraiser for BHS and we are PUMPED! What could be better than football and dogs? (We all know cats like football too, they just don't want you to see them caring.) Stop in during business hours at CMHD anytime between now and February 8th and for a $10 donation, you can buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win a $250 gift card! Between the extra cold weather this week and having so many dogs in the building, we are going through more bedding than usual! We could really use some more blankets. If you're getting rid of sheets, pillow cases, towels, comforters, throw blankets, or any other form of bedding (aside from pillows and heated blankets!), we will gladly take them off your hands! We do wash and reuse what we are able to. We are open Monday-Friday from 1-6 PM and Saturdays from 12-6 PM, but donations can also be dropped of on our covered porch after hours and a staff member will gladly bring them in.

It's Feel Good Friday, y'all, and we've got a reunion story!

Bentley the cat was brought to us in 2022 as a stray. We neutered him, caught him up on shots, and sent him home with his new adopters, Robin and Nelson. Well, about 9 months ago, Bentley decided he was ready for another adventure and pulled a disappearing act, as characters like Bentley are wont to do. Despite their efforts, Robin and Nelson couldn't find him. Until...

Last week, a concerned citizen in Bentley's hometown noticed a skinny cat hanging around, and as temperatures dropped, they decided it was best to bring him here to BHS. Because we microchip every animal that leaves our shelter, we were able to scan Bentley and notify his owners, who came straightaway to pick him up. He's now at home, warm and well fed, where we hope he stays this time!

And there you have it, folks. Fairytales really do come true. ❤🐱😁

UPDATE 3/9: Your donations have reached a little over $3,300!!! That means more than $6,000 earned for Shakra's care so far! I know we can get to $5,000 and earn that whole match. Keep going and THANK YOU!!! DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT!! THANKS TO AN ANONYMOUS DONOR, YOUR GIFTS TO SHAKRA'S CARE WILL BE DOUBLED UNTIL APRIL 1ST! A GENEROUS FRIEND OF BHS HAS OFFERED TO MATCH UP TO $5,000! Shakra the cat has been with us for a year. Though she presented as healthy at the time of her surrender, we soon learned she is diabetic. We've worked hard with local partner vets and managed one hurdle at a time on her way to health. Though she is already 10 years old, she's still got lots of good time left, and our hope is to get her blood sugar under control so she can soon find a home. The bills for her care have already exceeded $10,000, and we anticipate needing a few more months before she can be adopted. Every dollar matters, and all gifts will be matched up to $5,000!
