Fun Fact Friday: The Great Wall of China

When scientists were researching what was in the mortar used to build the Great Wall of China, they were surprised to find rice among the limestone-and-water mixture. As it turns out, those who built the series of walls across 13,000 miles found that the sticky rice-and-limestone mortar combination gave the paste more stability and a stronger hold.

At Rogan’s Memorials, we’re inspired by ancient innovations like this and the enduring craftsmanship of stone, but I don’t think you’ll see us incorporating rice, unless it’s in our lunch.

Honoring Legacy This Presidents' Day

On this day, we reflect on the great leaders who shaped our nation, and the monuments that keep their legacies alive.

A few years ago, we had the privilege of visiting the Lincoln Memorial. Seeing this monument in person was a reminder of the lasting impact great leadership has and the importance of preserving history in stone.

St. Valentine’s Grave: A Place of Love and Remembrance 💝

Located in Rome, the grave of St. Valentine has become a place of pilgrimage for many who wished to honor the patron saint of love.

Known for performing marriages even when they were banned, St. Valentine lived during the Roman Empire around the 3rd century AD and was eventually arrested and sentenced to death for his actions.

Over the years, people have visited his tomb, leaving flowers, letters, and tokens of affection, a tradition that continues today. This connection between love and remembrance helped shape the celebration of Valentine's Day, where we honor the loved ones who mean the most to us. 🌹

The story of St. Valentine’s grave is a reminder that love is eternal, and the places we choose to honor it are just as lasting.

Fun Fact Friday: Christ the Redeemer

Christ the Redeemer, a 98 foot tall monument atop Rio de Janeiro’s Mount Corcovado, isn’t immune to one major force of nature: lightning strikes.

‘On average, the statue endures about three to five bolts a year, which are typically harmless. But in 2014, a direct strike broke off a piece of the Redeemer’s right thumb and damaged its head during one of Brazil’s most terrifying electrical storms in which 1,109 bolts were recorded in just three hours. During the repairs, more lightning rods were placed to prevent future damage.”

At Rogan's Memorials, we know how important it is to choose the right materials for lasting beauty.

"What is the Difference Between a Headstone, Marker, and Monument?"

Choosing the right memorial for your loved one can feel overwhelming, especially with so many terms being used interchangeably.

Here’s a quick guide to help:

✅ Headstone: Also known as a monument, tombstone or gravestone. This is a stone that stands upright and typically requires a foundation underneath.

✅ Marker: Also known as a flush marker or footstone. This is a flat stone or plaque that lies flush with the ground, and typically does not require a foundation.

✅ Columbarium: Also known as a cremation stone or mausoleum. This stone comes in a variety of shapes and sizes but is defined by having a structure that allows for an urn or cremations to be placed inside it rather than burying them.

At Rogan’s Memorials, we offer a variety of options and can help you decide on the perfect tribute of life and legacy.
