PLEASE SHARE – Dog training has changed dramatically in the past 30 years. While the use of aversive techniques such as choke and prong collar corrections, shock collars, alpha wolf rollovers, dominance downs, and other methods based on positive punishment and negative reinforcement were the predominant form of dog training many years ago, these methods are now considered to be both unnecessary but also counter-productive and detrimental. Many consider them to be inhumane. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), and the Pet Professional Guild (PPG) recommend that aversives NEVER be used. Dog training should be fun and that means it is pain-free, force-free, and fear-free. Dog training should be fun for both you and your dog. – http://bit.ly/RewardVSAversive

PLEASE SHARE – This is the fourth in my series of articles with the theme “Things I Wish I Had Known.” This time I discuss the importance of knowing what we feed our pets.

My wife Paula and I became interested in pet nutrition back in 1992 by necessity; we had a sick dog and what we were feeding him was a factor. Over the years we have learned five things;

1) quality nutrition is the foundation for optimal physical and mental well-being,

2) all pet foods and pet food companies are not the same,

3) there is no single food or brand of food that is the “Best” for every pet,

4) the pet food arena is one where the consumer needs to be well informed and ever vigilant because not everyone recommending a pet food has your pet’s health as their primary goal.

Since 1992 staying informed about pet food has become our passion. By paying attention to what we feed our pets, they have lived long healthy lives, in some cases much longer than average. As a result, many people come to us seeking information, which we gladly provide. Recently someone contacted me indicating that they wanted their pet to live a long healthy life and understood that nutrition would play a significant role in their goal. They asked me which resources I would suggest for them to start their journey into learning about pet nutrition. I decided to make that the topic for my March 2019 column in Downeast Dog News.

You can read that column on my blog by clicking on the link at the end of this post. The article also includes links to articles, podcasts, and videos that I believe will be helpful to anyone that wants to feed their pet so that they live as long as possible.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD – If your pet care professional isn't talking about; Choice, Communication, Compassion, Consent, Emotions, Empathy, Partnership, Respect, and Trust; you NEED a NEW pet care professional. Before training a dog, you must have a relationship based on compassion, empathy, and respect. To achieve that, you must be able to understand your dog's needs, emotions, and how they communicate. Having the ability to make choices and to give consent is essential to the mental health of every living thing. We can develop a lifelong partnership with our dog only after we understand all these things.

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD–If your dog trainer, or anyone, ever suggests you do something to your dog that you would NEVER do to a human toddler, FIND A NEW DOG TRAINER!

The use of pain, force, and fear, tools like shock, prong, and shock collars, as well as sq**rt bottles and shake cans, are inhumane, cruel, and unnecessary.

If you are unable to find a humane dog trainer, check out the trainer search at the Pet Professional Guild - https://www.petprofessionalguild.com/find-a-ppg-professional/

PLEASE SHARE – Dog parks can be a great outlet for many dogs, but they can also create behavioral problems that can be very difficult to fix. Before you visit a dog park with your dog, I suggest that you consider several factors outlined in this blog post and companion podcast. I address the characteristics that make a dog likely to enjoy the dog park experience as well as temperament traits that indicate a dog should avoid the dog park. Things you need to know about canine behavior and body language are discussed as well as tips on how to evaluate a dog park and its culture. It is my goal to help you ensure that your trip to the dog park will be fun for your dog and you. FMI - http://bit.ly/GoingToTheDogPark

PLEASE SHARE – Things I Wish I Had Known Before I Started Training Dogs – Gus, the Dominance Myth, An Alpha Roll, and a Damaged Relationship – In a recent interview, I was asked a series of questions about how to choose a dog trainer. One of the questions was “What would you like to have known when you started training dogs?” This post is the first of a series of articles inspired by that question. In it, I discuss the first training class I ever attended and the fallacy of the dominance and “Alpha” myth and the damage it can do to the relationship between a person and their dog.

You can read the article on my blog at http://bit.ly/Things-Gus-Dominance and in the September 2018 issue of Downeast Dog News.

PLEASE SHARE – I appreciate what shelters and rescues do to find homes for unwanted pets. However, I am not alone in my concern about the treatment of some pets receive at some shelters and rescues.

When I recommend a shelter or rescue, I expect three things:

1. They are a member of the Pet Professional Guild. Membership in the PPG only costs a shelter or rescue $35/year. A small investment to demonstrate their commitment to “No, Pain, No Force, and No Fear,” and inconsequential considering the wealth of information available to them as part of their membership.

2. They have policies in place, ensuring that they follow the PPG Guiding Principles and the AAHA Canine and Feline Behavior Management Guidelines.

3. They have signed the Shock-Free Coalition Pledge.

I addressed those concerns in my May column in Downeast Dog News and in this post on my blog - http://bit.ly/WWM-OpnLtrShltrs-MAY2019

PLEASE SHARE & PLEASE WATCH – In this video clip from the documentary film Dogs, Cats, and Scapegoats you will earn about the damaging effects on dogs inflicted by America's most famous self-described "animal behaviorist" Cesar Millan. This film should be on the “Must See” list for anyone that works with dogs and cats, either professionally or as a volunteer. That includes; Boarding Kennel Owners and Staff, Daycare Owners and Staff, Dog Trainers, Dog Walkers, Groomers, Pet Sitters, Shelter and Rescue Managers, Board of Directors, Workers and Volunteers, and Veterinarians and Staff. Quite simply, if you love and care for dogs, you need to see this! – https://vimeo.com/243498663
