🔎 In search of a faithful friend? The Australian Cattle Dog could be your perfect match! Known for their loyalty and boundless energy, these dogs make fascinating and vibrant companions.

🔹 Dual Names: Australian Cattle Dogs are commonly known as Blue Heelers due to their herding style of nipping at cattle's heels and their typical blue-speckled color. They can also appear in a red speckle, and hence are sometimes called Red Heelers.

🔹 Dingo Ancestry: The breed was developed by crossing various dogs with dingoes, the wild dog native to Australia. This mix was intended to create a more resilient and hardy breed capable of surviving in harsh Australian conditions.

🔹 Highly Intelligent and Trainable: Australian Cattle Dogs are known for their sharp intellect and thrive when given tasks to complete. Their keen intelligence makes them highly trainable and eager to learn, ideal for anyone looking for an active and engaging canine companion.

🔹 Longevity and Health: These dogs are known for their longevity and robust health. They often live up to 12-15 years, which is quite lengthy for dogs of their size. Their active lifestyle helps to maintain their health and vigor well into old age.

Considering adding an Australian Cattle Dog mix to your family? We have a couple of adorable ones at our shelter eagerly waiting for loving homes. Learn how you can give one of these sweet dogs their forever home by visiting our website:

🐾🌟 Meet July's Employee of the Month!🌟 🐾

Let's give a big round of applause to Holly, our Employee of the Month! Holly's dedication and compassion have profoundly touched the lives of our animals. She consistently goes the extra mile, showing her genuine care and commitment every single day.

Holly started at Sauk County Humane Society in April of 2021, working at the front desk helping customers, adoption counseling and doing paperwork. Holly wanted to help even more with the animals so she started working in the kennel on days we needed extra staff. When that wasn’t quite enough, she started work doing animal control in 2023.

Holly’s favorite thing about her job is, “seeing all the animals that get adopted.”

Her work with animals doesn’t just stop when her shift is over. At home, Holly stays occupied with her five dogs and her ferret. In Holly’s free-time she enjoys spending time with family, going to concerts, fishing (with her five dogs), watching reality shows and shopping.

🚧 Important Update 8/13/2024: Shelter Driveway Construction 🚧

Starting around Wednesday or Thursday, our shelter driveway will be under construction for approximately 3 weeks. During this time, please enter the shelter via the driveway behind the building (see picture). To accommodate this, a portion of our fencing will be removed to allow vehicle access.

We’ll have signs posted to guide you and minimize any confusion. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we improve our facilities! If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out.

This week's SCHS Pets of the Week are Zo and Nova! To make an appointment to meet them, call us at 608-356-2520.

Meet Zo, a one-year-old male domestic shorthair mix with a tabby coat. Zo came to us with a few other cats after they were left by their previous owner. Despite his past, Zo is the epitome of calm and affection. He's a quiet cat who loves to be held and will happily spend hours in your lap. Zo’s outgoing nature makes him a great companion for just hanging out and enjoying quiet moments together. If you're looking for a loving and serene friend, Zo is your perfect match. Come meet him and let him charm his way into your home and heart. He is up to date on his vaccinations and will be neutered prior to adoption.

Nova, a gentle 5-year-old heeler mix, found her way to our shelter along with a few other heelers after they were no longer wanted by their previous owner. Initially timid, Nova's affectionate and cuddly side shines through once she feels secure and comfortable. Although she's a bit older, Nova is still mastering the basics of house training. She handles the leash with ease and does we around other animals. With her loving disposition, Nova is eager to find a forever home where she can fully blossom and share her warm, gentle cuddles. She is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.

Visit our website saukhumane.org to view all of our adoptable animals. Cat and dog adoptions include the spay or neuter surgery, a microchip, and current vaccinations.

***ADOPTION UPDATE***

"Hello! I wanted to give an update on “Zen” who has been renamed Cowboy. 🤠

I got Cowboy back in October of 2022 at 8-months old. My only-child Aussie (Banjo) and Cowboy became the best of friends and brothers immediately. They’ve always loved to wrestle and get along so well. Cowboy is Banjo’s opposite, but they compliment each other nicely. Banjo is independent (not giving many cuddles or kisses), but loves to play, go on walks and hikes, and play fetch with just about anything (but prefers his chuck-it ball). Cowboy is SUCH an affectionate guy. He struggled for a while when the humans had to leave for work. Cowboy found himself at daycare to be surrounded by friendly people and dogs, and also at his grandparent’s house to support his separation anxiety. Cowboy loves to be right on top of you, giving kisses and cuddling all day. Cowboy also LOVES to play and go for walks. Cowboy learned the love of “Ball” quickly and learned how to drop it nicely like his brother. Cowboy has grown into himself and his personality. Cowboy (now 2 years old) is off anxiety meds and seems much more at ease. We love him to bunches and are grateful our paths crossed. Thanks SCHS ❤️"

Send your SCHS adoption updates to [email protected] (Facebook doesn't always notify us when you post your updates on Facebook) and we'll feature it on our Facebook and Instagram page!

This week's SCHS Pets of the Week are Corporal Whiskersworth and Star! To make an appointment to meet them, call us at 608-356-2520.

Meet Corporal Whiskersworth, a delightful four-month-old male Domestic Shorthair mix. With his striking orange and white fur, he immediately captures hearts. Found as a stray, Corporal Whiskersworth has quickly adapted to shelter life, always eager to greet visitors at the front of his kennel. He's a natural at making friends, enjoying the comfort of being picked up and carried around. When you pet him, he'll reward you with purrs and affectionate nudges. This energetic little guy thrives on play—give him a wand toy or a tunnel, and he's in paradise! Yet, for all his zest, he cherishes quiet cuddle times on a warm lap. Whether it’s play or pause, Corporal Whiskersworth is all about sharing love and lively moments. She is up to date on her vaccinations and will be spayed prior to adoption.

Our Dog of the Week, Star, shines brightly in our shelter as a charming 4-month-old female puppy. Surrendered alongside her siblings due to her previous owner's allergies, she has quickly adjusted and is eager to embrace all the love and attention she receives. As a typical puppy, Star is brimming with energy, enjoys her playful romps, and then curiously wanders off to explore her surroundings. She's mastering the leash and responds well to the command "sit," though she’s just at the beginning of her training journey. This adorable fluff will require regular grooming to keep her coat pristine. Star's friendly demeanor makes her an excellent companion for other dogs and a wonderful potential playmate for children. She’s ready to find a forever home where she can continue to learn, play, and love. She is up to date on her vaccinations and will be spayed prior to adoption.
