This week's SCHS Pets of the Week are Nena and Katie! To make an appointment to meet them, call us at 608-356-2520.

Nena, a spirited Terrier mix, is ready to find her forever home. At two years and ten months old, this lively girl weighs 50 pounds and is always up for some fun, especially if it involves a good game of fetch. Nena thrives in a bustling environment and would be the perfect companion for an active family with a fenced yard where she can run and play to her heart's content. While she's still mastering her leash skills and house manners, she's a quick learner who already knows commands like "come" and "sit." Nena would prefer to be the only pet in her new home, although she might get along with some dogs. If you're looking for a playful and energetic buddy, Nena could very well be your match! After over 130 days at the shelter, this sweet girl is ready to find her fur-ever home. She is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.

Katie is the kind of cat who makes herself right at home. She’s sweet, affectionate, and always happy to curl up on your lap for a quiet afternoon. At 6 years old, she’s calm and easygoing, but still curious enough to explore her surroundings and sniff out a hidden treat or two. Katie’s a total people-cat—she loves attention, enjoys being brushed, and isn’t shy about asking for a little love. Her previous family had a change in lifestyle and couldn’t keep her, but she’s ready for a second chance with someone who’ll appreciate her gentle spirit and cuddly nature. If you're looking for a loving lap cat, miss Katie is your girl. She is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.

Visit our website saukhumane.org to view all of our adoptable animals. Cat and dog adoptions include the spay or neuter surgery, a microchip, and current vaccinations.

As we gear up for all the fun and fireworks this 4th of July, it’s important to remember—this is one of the busiest times of the year for lost pets.

The loud booms and bright flashes we love can be terrifying for our furry family members, often causing anxiety, panic, and attempts to escape. Every year, shelters across the country see a spike in lost dogs around Independence Day.

Let’s keep your pets safe and sound this holiday. Here are a few simple but crucial tips to help them stay calm and secure during the celebrations:

Keep Pets Indoors: This is the safest place for your pets during fireworks. Animals have heightened hearing and the loud noises can cause panic. Keeping them inside can muffle the sound and reduce stress.

Create a Calm Environment: Prepare a comfortable space in a quiet room. Close the curtains to block out the flashes of light and consider playing soothing music or white noise to drown out the bangs.

Update Identification: Ensure your pet’s microchip and ID tag details are up to date. Fear can make even the most well-behaved pets attempt to escape or run away.

Comfort and Distract: Provide your pet with their favorite toys and treats to keep them occupied. A new toy or a tasty chew can be a good distraction.

Consider a Thundershirt: Many pet owners find that a Thundershirt or similar calming wrap can help reduce their pet’s anxiety.

Consult Your Vet: If your pet has an extreme reaction to fireworks, consult your veterinarian. They can offer advice or prescribe medication to help ease their anxiety.

Stay Home if Possible: If your pet is known to be extremely fearful of fireworks, consider staying home to comfort them.

Let's not forget our pets’ well-being amid our Independence Day celebrations. A little preparation can go a long way in ensuring they feel safe during the noisy festivities.

Have a happy and safe 4th of July!🇺🇸

Big thanks to Susan L. for donating three boxes of peanut butter—a fan favorite around here!

Full of energy and loves to play—especially with toys and a game of fetch! Still working on basic manners and will benefit from continued puppy and leash training. This pup would thrive with an active family familiar with the breed, and a home with older children would be the best fit.
