Gonna be a long one but a good one. Been walking behind this hound for sometime now. Long enough to where I can see some gray hairs trying sneak thier way onto her face. Hurts me a little to see it. I know she's my once in a lifetime hound. We've spent thousands of hours in the woods and on the road. Met some of the finest people you could ever want to meet. Seen some of the finest hunting ground you could ever dream up in your mind.
Seen alot of things happen in the woods, some good, some not so good. We've swam rivers, crossed highways, run through parking lots, tracked on military bases, tracked for famous people and taken many a boat rides to find deer. The list goes on. Crossed about any and every fence known to man. Toar up a many pants on these said fences. Sometimes I lay in bed at night and reminisce about our time in the woods and go through old pics of the deer she's found. Sometimes it's hard to remember every detail about the track itself but one thing that is very easy to remember is being able to watch people ride the roller coaster of emotion. Like I said before, some good, some not so good. But in this case in the story I'm about to tell, it worked out in our favor.

I got a call shortly after dark from some good folks I've known awhile. 17 year old Landon had arrowed a stud. He said "without a doubt I smoked him." Having been around this young man many times, I knew I could take his word to the bank. I spoke with his dad awhile getting all the details and to get a plan of attack together. The blood trail was a bit on the shorter side which is not uncommon for this time of the year for the rising levels of K1 in their blood. It just won't allow it. A quick 75 to 80 yard blood trail down through a wooded finger right back up to the edge of some standing beans and "p**f" he's gone. An absolute blood coated arrow tells the story of "he didn't go 20". But he did. I'll be the first to tell you I'm not a huge fan of tracking through standing beans especially when they're dry and dusty. Regardless, Livie takes a few minutes to get some things sorted out and away she goes. For the sake of time, I'll fast forward and tell you the deer had crossed the bean field and bedded on the other side in the timber. Aaron spotted the bruiser bedded. Facing them in some thick, no shot was offered. The buck blows out. Right back across the standing beans and into the finger he started from. This is where it gets good. We decided to give a few minutes to bed back down. When we continued pursuit, Livie looked like a draft horse at a horse pull, just digging. She locked him in. I knew it was game over for the buck, just didn't know how long he wanted to play. The plan was to slip as quiet as possible into this finger in hopes of arrowing him in his final bed. To my surprise he blows through the 200 yard wide finger of woods withput a bed and back into a bigger standing bean field. I thought to myself check mate.As I entered the beans I could see an island of woods ahead. Probably 30 yards wide by 50 yards long. Livie was driving strait to it. Again to my surprise, the buck runs directly up to the edge of the island and begins to skirt around the right side. Livie has him step for step. As we loop around the back side of the island the buck veers off into the beans. Super odd, I thought to myself as the next patch of woods was over 500 yards away. Why would he run that far across standing beans? It's almost like wading through knee deep snow it will wear you out. We have along way to go across this field I thought so we pick up the pace to a fast walk, just under a jog. Mind you Landon has been on my hip since the race began. Which it should been no surprise to me to hear his voice shout...."oh Chris loooo......." too late. I'm already on this buck. I felt his hair against my shin and my left leg goes air borne. Not gonna lie about it , my body made some wierd involuntary noise that resembles a lost fawn."behhhhh" lol. Not sure why I did that. Anyways I thought I was a gonner. If he wanted me, he had me. I tensed up for a kick or even a gig from that bohemith of a rack he had. Thank the lord we scared each other, or maybe it was my squall that scared him lol. The buck bounds off like a mule deer back around the island almost to complete a circle just before loosing sight if him. We decided to give him a few more minutes to bed again so we could gather ourselves and so I could check my pants. Livie says shes ready to go now. We press onward. We come around the island right where we lost sight of him and I spot the buck bedded again but this time with his head down. We ease in with caution. The buck is stone cold dead. He died mid run and crashes on his own. Tell me how!?!?! I can promise you he was very alive about 90 yards ago.........Wild ride with some great people. Even better buck. Shot was money, deer are tuff, Livie is a warrior and I need to look were I walk! Good night yall I need some sleep!
