🌨❕Due to our road still being hazardous coming back to the shelter and the weather coming in tomorrow, we will be closed 1-9-25 and 1-10-25. We are so sorry for the inconvenience. We are still here taking care of the furbabies and answering phones for any of your questions, concerns or complaints. Everyone stay safe and warm out there! Remember your outside animals as well. Use straw rather than hay for their housing. Keep them full at all times, extra calories keeps them warmer. Food and water should always be present for them during the cold weather! 🌨❕

Norbert is the sweetest love. He is the most perfect gentleman. He appears to be mostly house broken and knows a few basic commands. His favorite things are his stuffies and belly rubs. He loves hugs and would be the nicest boy to take sunset walks with. You will get lost in his kind, brown eyes and fall in love if you only give him a chance.

We've had a lot of interest in our black pups that are on stray hold, but did you know we have 2 adorable black pups already on the floor for adoption??!! Eddie and Ruby Sue have been with us for almost a month and are the cutest little kids. They are both very friendly, playful and snuggly. We don't anticipate them being large dogs, more medium sized. One of our neglect case girls has finally broke out of the shelter!! Gypsy is in a foster home!! This baby has held her composure and strength despite it all! After all she has been through and her love, loyalty and trust still remains. This girl deserves nothing more than the best!!!
Her best buddy Sugar is still waiting patiently for her time to shine. She is still needing a foster! Lets get both of these girls the happy ending they deserve!

The Nelson County Animal Shelter is an open admission shelter that houses stray dogs and cats found in Nelson County. We hold stray animals for five days hoping that the animals owner will reclaim their pet. If your pet goes missing please do not wait to call us. Please call immediately. We will take a Lost Pet report and notify you if we get your pet. If you have found a pet and are willing to hold onto it to keep it out of the shelter, please call us so we can take a Found Pet report.
If you are a Nelson County Resident and can no longer keep your pet we can take your pet, but we do encourage you to reach out to the Humane Society of Nelson County first. We work very closely with The Humane Society of Nelson County to pull animals from the shelter to give them a chance for adoption or rescue.
We offer both dog and cat overnight drop off cages. The drop off cages are for Nelson County residents to use if they have found a stray animal that needs shelter after operating hours. It is not intended to be used by owners wanting to relinquish their personal pets. If you need to re-home your pet we can help you, but please contact us first. This allows us to get important information and to insure that we have space to help your pet.
Nelson County Animal Care and Control is also responsible for enforcing the Nelson County Animal Control Ordinance. All county residents should be familiar with these laws. Please review it here:http://nelsoncountyky.com/wpcontent/Ordinances/Animal%20Control%20Ordinance.pdf
Every owned dog or cat in Nelson County is required to have their pets licensed yearly. There is a fee of $5 for pets that are spayed and neutered, and a fee of $20 for pets that are not spayed or neutered. If you have 3 or more spayed/neutered pets, you qualify for a multi pet discount price of $15. We also offer a one time $30 lifetime license for pets who are spayed or neutered and microchipped. If your pet is not licensed please make sure to do so. Thanks!
