🌊DIPPIN' DOGS 2024🌊
We had such a good time! We were able to take FIVE of our adoptable dogs to have some fun in the sun! The adults Fern (Coonhound), Buster (Corgi Mix), and Emmy Lou (Beagle Mix) are not so much what we would call "water dogs" but they had fun in the sun none the less! The last two of our "W" Babies (Willa and Wanda) however LOVE LOVE LOVED splashing around with their new friends! Fern, Buster, and Emmy Lou are all in foster homes loving and learning all the things! All 5 of these sweet are available for adoption, if you are interested please call (502)348-1885!

The Nelson County KY Animal Control and Shelter invited me out to meet these two dogs. Just months ago they were on the doorstep of death, rescued from horrific animal cruelty situations. Today- they are happy, healthy and so precious. I loved meeting this incredible staff and sweet pups ❤️

We would like to give a shoutout to one of our amazing fosters! Ms. Janice has been fostering with us for years and has helped 19 dogs find their confidence and a joy for life! Ms. Emmy Lou is no exception!
This sweet sweet girl came into our care on June 7th, 2024 and the hunt for her perfect home was on. She was fearful and timid around this time and would run away from men. Ms. Janice has other dogs of her own and has been around the block with dogs that need a little extra TLC. Emmy Lou hit the jack pot! She has been with her foster momma Janice for almost TWO MONTHS! Emmy Lou has blossomed into a very well rounded and outgoing girl with no fear! Though, like all of us, she is wondering why her forever family hasn't found her yet? Could you or your family be who she's been waiting patiently for?
A message from Janice, foster momma:
"Emmy Lou is a sweet, playful, curious, energetic, and happy dog of 2 years. In her time with us, she has become house-trained (no mistakes for last 3-4 weeks), crate-trained (will kennel on command with no resistance/whining), and has learned sit and is working on other commands. Emmy gets along well with our 2 dogs, and has gotten along with 10+ other neighborhood dogs (not tested with cats). She enjoys people from 18 months to 75 years old. She loves to play and run, entertains herself by pitching a ball against the house and chasing it, and loves a good game of tug of war. A fenced in yard is ideal for her. She loves cuddles as well. Although we don't hunt, she has keen interest in squirrels, rabbits, birds and deer, and has pursued them in our yard. Emmy would do best with a family with kids aged 7+, active adults for walks and hiking, and she can be an only dog or do ok with other dogs."

We are hiring for a part-time kennel attendant.
~Pay rate of $20/hr
~Average 20-25hrs week alternating weeks
~Schedule is: Work two on Two off and every other weekend off. Half of the days will be 8am-2:30pm half will be 8am-4:30pm. Saturdays are 8am-2:30pm Sundays are half days 8am-12pm.
~Applicants must be at least 18 years old
General duties will include but not limited to:
~Cleaning/Disinfecting Cat and Dog Kennels
~Laundry
~Properly and safely handling tame/aggressive pets
~Answering phones and helping with public
~Assisting with adoptions/meet and greets
~Assisting with new intakes
~Being able to follow directions and be a team player
Experience preferred but not required:
~Giving SubQ and Oral Medications
~Knowledge of how disease and illness spread

‼️BIG THINGS HAPPENING‼️
Our '"W" Babies have been here so long that they have been able to get ALL their vaccines to be able to go outside safely! When they came in with their Momma Waverly (a petite 35 pounds) and their 3 brothers on May 19th, 2024 their eyes and ears were still closed. In these videos are their genuine FIRST reactions to the outside world. Their personalities are starting to really shine through. They are adventurous, loving, and ready to take on the world!
They are desperately looking for their forever family! They do not want to continue to grow up in the shelter. If you are interested in adopting one please reach out ASAP!

July has been such a good month for our pets here at the shelter! In fact it has the been the most successful month for adoptions this year! We adopted out 5 cats, 12 kittens, 9 dogs, 9 puppies and 2 ferrets! That is 37 pets total! We have our community to thank with all of the sponsored adoptions, our government for allowing us to lower our cat adoption fees, our wonderful adopters for paying it forward and for choosing adoption!! ⭐️AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION and RESCUE⭐️
On May 29th 2024, our shelter took in seven 10 day old puppies and their momma. We were told that the mother was picked up as a stray and 2 days later on May 18th, 2024 she gave birth. Once they were set-up in our isolation kennels the top priority of the staff was to ensure their long term health. Being in a shelter environment, illness and disease can run rampant and drain a shelter of its resources. The puppies were so young and their immune systems so fragile our staff had to be diligent. The staff could not vaccinate the puppies till they were 6 weeks old. They remained with mom till they were about 6-8 weeks old. During this time we watched them open their eyes and ears. Our faces and voices were the first they saw and heard. We watched them take their first steps and heard them make their first barks and howls. All the while taking every precaution to ensure they remained healthy. Once the puppies were fully weaned we posted. The whole family is for adoption from the shelter and their information has also been sent to our rescue partners. Shortly after being posted, a gentleman claiming to be the mother’s owner called to see if we still had her and steps needed to take to get her back home. We verified ownership and it turned out to be a happy ending as he adopted her back from us! Adopting her back from us allowed us to get her spayed, vetted, and microchipped. Her name turned out to be Lilly and thankfully she found her happy ending being reunited with her family. While talking to her owner we discovered that he also owned the father to the puppies! He informed us that he was a Pit/Mastiff Mix.
3 of the 7 puppies have found their forever homes and the 5 we still have are waiting patiently for their chance. They are all playful, sweet, and rambunctious. They still have their puppy breath and antics. They will grow to be anywhere from 30-40 pounds or 60-80 pounds. The staff, needless to say, has grown attached to these sweet babies. The puppies have grown up here in the shelter and this is the only life they know! Even though they have most of everything they need (love, cuddles, food, toys, and soft beds) we know that there is so much more out there for them. They have no idea what they are missing! If you would like to show them what life is truly all about, you can submit an application to adopt! They will be fully vetted and microchipped.

One day apart in March, these two helpless souls were saved from a life of neglect. The only life they ever knew. Thanks to the good Samaritans in our County who made us aware of their situations, and to our Animal Control Officer for stepping in and doing what he could to bring them justice and into our care to get the help they needed.
Sugar is our Pitty girl. She is around 4yrs old and came in weighing 25 pounds. Since then, she has doubled in size and now weighs 53 pounds. Gypsy is our Boxer girl. She is around 4 years old as well and came in weighing 36 pounds. She has also almost doubled in size and now weighs 61 pounds.
The moment Sugar and Gypsy came into our shelter, you could tell they were grateful to be here and knew they were somewhere safe. They were happy and comfortable within the 24 hours of being here. They melted to our loving touch. You would never know these girls didn’t know a life of care. They instantly trusted us.
Sugar and Gypsy were put inside kennels directly across from one another. We slowly started noticing that they seemed very interested in one another. They would bark and almost play through the gates. After a few weeks, we decided to let these girls formally meet. It was an instant connection! We like to think these girls bonded over their similar situations through the kennels before they ever were out together. It was like they had known each other all their lives. They have become the best of friends! They go on weekly walks together, run in the yard carefree and content. Sugar loves to play in the pool while Gypsy watches over her.
Both girls could not be more different. Sugar is a wild spirit that no one could hold back. She has the energy of a toddler but listens much better than one! She is a loving girl who is looking for adventure and her next activity. She loves to be busy whether it's playing in her pool, playing fetch or running in the yard. Once she gets all that energy out, she is ready to cuddle up with someone and chill out. Gypsy is like the big mature sister. She is more laid back and just wants to make everyone around her happy. She is content with doing whatever it is you ask of her. She is a patient girl with a gentle demeanor. She still has energy and loves to run and play and keeps up well with Sugar. Although these girls are different in many ways, they have one big thing in common. And that is their story. They both came from nothing and still rose above it all. They did not let their hardships break their spirit or trust in humans.
We are sharing their story simply because they matter! We want the world to see that although animal welfare can be hard, it is also so rewarding, and Sugar and Gypsy are a prime example of just that. This is why we do what we do and why we will always be their voice and fight their fight. These girls will have their happy ending and their justice. This isn’t the last you will hear about Sugar and Gypsy. We plan on sharing more of their progress and updates!

Last Sunday we had our Pup Crawl Adoption event! The Friends Of Bourbon City Bark Park hosted this wonderful day and our friends at The Humane Society of Nelson County joined us as well! It was such a success and a great time! We can't wait to do more events like this!! Thank you to all of the hostesses, volunteers who came out and helped walk the doggos, and the community who came out and supported us! We ended the day with two pups adopted!! The dogs had such a fun time getting out of the shelter and getting all of the attention🐶❤️

The AFS IT Department at American Fuji Seal chose the animal shelter for their annual Good Deed Challenge! They sold rubber duckies to raise money, two employees sponsored four adoptions and Ethan Almighty even came for pictures to support us as well! All together with the sponsored adoptions included they raised $2170.00!! We can not thank you all enough! This generosity does not go unnoticed! The Shelter staff and all of the fur-babies are so thankful!! Thank you to all of the donors, the staff and anyone who was involved in such an amazing act of kindness! 😍🐾

I AM ADOPTED!
1 in 3,000 Calico cats are male. Prince Florian here is that 1 in 3,000!! He is Royally rare! In the 25 years that the Nelson County Animal Shelter and The Humane Society have been up and running we have never came across a male calico! We are so amazed here at the shelter! He has been fully vetted and no medical issues have been detected. Now he is off to live his 9 lives with his Furr-ever family!

The Nelson County Animal Shelter is an open admission shelter that houses stray dogs and cats found in Nelson County. We hold stray animals for five days hoping that the animals owner will reclaim their pet. If your pet goes missing please do not wait to call us. Please call immediately. We will take a Lost Pet report and notify you if we get your pet. If you have found a pet and are willing to hold onto it to keep it out of the shelter, please call us so we can take a Found Pet report.
If you are a Nelson County Resident and can no longer keep your pet we can take your pet, but we do encourage you to reach out to the Humane Society of Nelson County first. We work very closely with The Humane Society of Nelson County to pull animals from the shelter to give them a chance for adoption or rescue.
We offer both dog and cat overnight drop off cages. The drop off cages are for Nelson County residents to use if they have found a stray animal that needs shelter after operating hours. It is not intended to be used by owners wanting to relinquish their personal pets. If you need to re-home your pet we can help you, but please contact us first. This allows us to get important information and to insure that we have space to help your pet.

Every owned dog or cat in Nelson County is required to have their pets licensed yearly. There is a fee of $5 for pets that are spayed and neutered, and a fee of $20 for pets that are not spayed or neutered. If you have 3 or more spayed/neutered pets, you qualify for a multi pet discount price of $15. We also offer a one time $30 lifetime license for pets who are spayed or neutered and microchipped. If your pet is not licensed please make sure to do so. Thanks!
