With 20 years experience, we strive to build a lasting connection between horse and rider. Look no further! I have been training horses, unprofessionally, since I was about 10 but started training horses for PonyRides R Us and other private owners once I turned 14. I use many Clinton Anderson techniques and I love to work with "problem" horses. If anyone is interested in having your horse trained

or just need a few pointers I'm your girl. I've trained jumpers, barrel racers/gymkhana horses, started cutters and reiners, done quite a bit of western pleasure and have trained all of my horses to be ridden bridle-less, to the point where i ride them with a small rope around their neck or with nothing at all and they respond to cues from my feet or simply by shifting my weight.

Posting for a Client!
APHA Bay Overo Yearling Stud C**t.
Unique markings, willing personality, and very mild tempered- he truly is all that and a bag of chips!
'Cinch' leads, ties, loads, picks up his feet, has had some groundwork, stands to be bathed and fly sprayed. Both te**is are down and he doesn't act 'study'. He would make an excellent addition to someone's breeding program or a flashy gelding for the show pen!
Papers are for sire and dam
Serious inquiries only, I do not own this horse so I will respond back to any PMs with the email of the owner.

Too many people don't think a horse needs to know much to be a trail riding horse. I think you need to develop the relationship with your horse in a controlled environment. Once you get out in the hills, their are too many variables you can't control. https://vimeo.com/ondemand/donlindsayhorsetraining

✨Resolutions for the Horse Show Competitor✨

🌟 Thou Shall Not Switch Training Programs After One Bad Run

- I know... you bought this magical unicorn that used to mark 75's like it was easy with its previous rider. You spent a lot of money. You're heading to your first show of the year and you are fixin' to mark a 78, dammit. You end up marking a 60. Your unicorn is now seemingly broken. Your trainer is looking out for you and doing their very best coaching you through runs with your limited skill set. One of the major keys to success is consistency, don't be a trainer hopper, stay the course unless you have a much more educated reason than "well I'm shoving my horse up the pen with my offside leg and for some reason my trainer is telling me to take my spurs off - they should be able to just FIX THAT, I paid a RIDICULOUS amount of money for these custom Kerry Kelley Bits & Spurs spurs and I LOVE them and will NOT take them off." We've all been there, if someone wants to send me a pair of Kerry Kelley's I probably wouldn't want to take them off either, heck I'd probably sleep in them, but maybe you should have invested in the clover-leafs, not the rock grinders.

🌟 Practice Gratitude In & Out of the Show Pen

- Be grateful for your horse, for the opportunity to show, for your friends that stay up late and cheer you on, for your family that supports you going up and down the road, for your trainer that has turned you from novice, to successful competitor, for your significant other that "forgets" that time you threw a bridle at them. Gratitude. It's really cool. Invest in it.

🌟 Hang Your Bridles Right

- I mean it, if you haven't learned how to do this yet, you need to lock yourself away in a tack room somewhere and don't come out until you know how.

🌟 Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals for the Show Season

- S: Specific
- M: Measurable
- A: Achievable
- R: Relevant
- T: Time-Bound

- It's proven that when you make sure your goals are S.M.A.R.T. and chunk them down by weeks, months or quarters so that they are more achievable than say "Only ever mark a 75 and win the World but never leave my home state/province"... you will get a whole lot farther, faster.

🌟 Don't Play The Comparison Game

- The minute you start to think to yourself something to the effect of: "well so-and-so only does well because her dad bought her that horse" or "well of course so-and-so is successful, she grew up in this sport" or "so-and-so works for a trainer, so of course she does well" or "well, if I was retired like so-and-so I would be able to do this easily too".... I have a really great trick for you. It's going to rock your world. Are you ready? I want you to find the nearest wall and bang your head against it five times. Why? Because that is the useless, hurtful and definitely odd motion that is equivalent to wasting your time comparing yourself to others. My words of advice... 1. Be happy for people in their winning season, you don't know what they've lost in their losing season. 2. If you are constantly getting beaten, sit down, re-evaluate and strategize how you can be the best competitor you can be with what you have in the moment. Whether that's ride more, go to the gym, watch more shows, take more lessons, whatever it is, start to strategize how you can be the best version of yourself. No comparison required.

🌟 Believe In Your Unicorn

- aka, have fun! Have a blast. Support the sport. Make new friends. Scare yourself by showing in new arenas. Get on your association board. Cry your eyes out when you mark your first 70, 73, 75. Celebrate your successes like you just won the friggen' world. Show everyone your new buckle. Wear your spurs to the grocery store. Take a clinic. Go to the Futurity. Go to the World Show and holler your guts out with your friends after a few cocktails (wait, who would do that? ...heathens) Either way, or anyway, or whatever way... the golden question is... Why essentially throw all this money into the air and stomp all over it, not to have the most friggen' fun you can have possible?

Things to keep in mind as we get back into the saddle on these nicer days.
You wouldn't jump off the couch after a winter of no exercise and run a 5k, would you?
Take the 'fresh' off your horses with lots of constructive groundwork before you ride. You're in a much safer position this way and also gives you time to see how your horse is feeling before a ride. Is he really hot? Is he lazy as ever? Does she have lameness/stiffness anywhere you maybe didn't see when you brought her out of the stall?
Be thoughtful of your horse and their current conditioning when you ride and adjust accordingly over time to increase muscle tone and endurance; all the while keeping a sound and able partner.

Bute vs Banamine – what's the difference? 🤔

The two pain-relieving prescription medications that most horse owners keep on hand are Bute and Banamine – but do you know the differences between the two?

Probably one of the most difficult things for me as a horse trainer is when I gain a new hater. It’s actually something I’m working on, to not let it affect me too much. While I want to be the type of person that cares, sometimes it won’t matter what I do, that person is going to dislike me. And to be a little more specific I’m going to just talk about clients that end up deciding I’m not worth the dirt on my boots.

Last year I trained a horse for a person, probably one of the best horses I started all year. Heck I was pretty happy and dang sure proud of that horse. But despite how I felt...I believe I lost that client and that client was one of my least happy clients of the year. I actually considered that person a friend until not long after they got their horse home. If I had to guess that client may very well hate me and be telling people what a lousy job I did with that horse.

Now from where I was sitting, that horse was as smooth as butter on a warm biscuit when it came to training. Very little resistance and wanted to be good. But the client got the horse home and couldn’t bridle it, and couldn’t work a gate from the horses back. So being a typical person they figured it wasn’t them, and they sure weren’t going to blame fluffy, so it had to be that dang trainers fault!! What this client didn’t realize is that they didn’t want c**t starting, they wanted c**t finishing. They wanted this horse to fill in any and all gaps when it came to their poor timing and feel. Well when it comes to getting a horse used to poor timing and feel I’m not your guy. I don’t offer that to a horse very often.

Also, when you take a horse home and try to work a gate, we need to realize that to the horse this is a brand new thing. Yes, he has worked two different gates at my house, but in his brain he hasn’t generalized that all gates are the same. This is the seasoning part of horse training. It takes time, and new, but similar scenarios before a horse generalizes that this is, in fact, the same thing we’ve done before.

In all c**t starting scenarios there’s going to be some time that it takes for a horse to get used to the way you offer things. You will offer things to that horse in a different way than the trainer did. Just like if your friend rode the horse he would also offer a different feel to that horse. With time and consistency a horse can figure out that even though it’s a slightly different feel, we want the same response. That’s why we recommend lessons. As riders we can help bridge the gap for the horse so he understands what the new rider wants. Be patient, spend time and effort allowing you and your horse to get on the same page. Whether your horse is finished or not, it’s going to take time for the two of you to be dancing to the beat of the same drum.

Another thing that I found interesting is that some of the toughest cases I’ve had, ended up leading to some of the happiest clients. These were the horses that I was not at all happy with where they were at in their training when they went home. But it was like I blew the socks off of these clients they were so impressed! So it turns out that not all clients are created equal. I like the realistic clients that understand horses are living, breathing, thinking animals. Just like us, there isn’t a perfect one out there. They don’t expect to get a push button, kid safe, and perfectly obedient in every way, type of result. Horses have good days and bad days just like us. And their progress looks more like the stock market than a perfectly straight upward rise.

If I really sat down and tried, I could name off several clients that no longer like me. Sometimes it’s timing, or bad luck, or they brought me a very tough horse and expected a unicorn in return. As tough as it is to overcome being disliked by people it is just another piece of my personal development journey. If a person is going to do anything worthwhile in life they are going to acquire haters. Sometimes the more haters you have, the more successful you are becoming. At the end of the day it’s not my job to fix how other people feel about me. It’s my job to be the type of person that I’m proud to be. To sit down and criticize myself, praise myself, hate myself, and love myself. I try to love where I am but also know where I’m going and know where I’m growing.

The balance between self criticism and self praise is never going to be 50/50, but make sure it comes from the conversations within you, and not the conversations happening without you.
