Good Fibrations

Good Fibrations Angora goats, fine yarn, wearable art I realized that in order to keep my goats, I needed to find a value added market for their fiber. It’s all about the goats!

Good Fibrations is a one woman multi-faceted Mohair fiber business in the mountains of Western North Carolina that raises Colored Angora Goats. My passion for Angora goats started in Pagosa Springs, CO in 1998 when I acquired my first three goats, whose genetics are still present in my herd. My need for an agricultural tax status for my land presented me with the opportunity to have the Angora goa

ts I had been longing for. My original plan was to shear the goats and sell their mohair to warehouses in TX, however with the fair trade laws changing, the wholesale market for mohair plummeted. This seemingly small shift started me on a journey into the world of fiber arts that has not ceased to amaze and delight me. In 2002 I moved back to North Carolina, bringing my seven pregnant colored does, black buck, guard llama, horse, Shetland pony, two dogs and my cat. Within two weeks my does kidded and the goat population more than doubled! I began experimenting with different mills for processing my mohair into yarn, and learning which wools were best suited for blending with my mohair. Good Fibrations now produces worsted and bulky weight yarn of prime homegrown mohair blended with South Dakota grown Merino wool for fiber artists. Most of the yarn is kettle dyed or handpainted in Good Fibrations’ signature dye recipes. The unique colorways are inspired by my travels, adventures and my delight in the natural beauty of my surroundings. While colored mohair is lustrous in it’s natural state, dyeing gives it a halo like appearance. Playing with the colors and blends of fibers led to the creation of Good Fibrations roving of prime Mohair, Alpaca and Corriedale wool for spinners, knitters, and felting artists. Good Fibrations is a close knit family. I live in the former hay loft of a little ‘ole timey’ barn with my studio and display area nestled downstairs. My goats live in part of the downstairs and several additional shelters. I consider my goats part of my family, not just the source of shimmering mohair. The rhythm of farm work, feeding and caring for my goats make my heart sing, and as much as I enjoy the fiber arts portion of Good Fibrations, nothing makes me happier than those rare moments that find me sitting out in the pasture enjoying the company of my goat family.
