As we prepare for a cold front to move in, which experts are saying that it is the most frigid cold snap in a decade, we are reminding and urging owners to bring their pets inside. Due to wind chills dropping this low, it may result in frostbite on exposed skin in as little 15 minutes. If your hands are cold, your pets paws are cold too. We recommend staying indoors during these freezing temperatures, but if you have to venture out with your pet, here are some tips to prepare for the dropping temps:
• If your dog must be outside for ANY length of time, please make sure they have a shelter built several inches off the ground, lined with straw or bedding, and there is a heavy tarp or cover at the entrance to block the wind.
• If your dog has to go for walks, please have them wear temperature appropriate layers and paw protection.
• Make sure you are using pet safe salt on your deck/walkways, and wipe your pets paws after coming inside with a warm, wet cloth.
• Please check and refill water sources regularly - they will freeze over.
