Happy National Dog Day Roxi - Let us see your dog 🥰

12 year old that was surrendered because her owner was moving out of state. He had her since she was 8 weeks old and needless to say, Roxie was devastated. She spent the first 48 hours howling, barking and crying, while she tried to call for him…it was horrible. BUT as I sat with her, every minute got better. When she would go out, she would keep turning around to see if I was still with her. After about two weeks, Roxie began to show me who she was….a true German shepherd, she trusted me, she was kind and she was adjusting to her new world. She is an incredible girl and is very much loved…

As a sanctuary for the unwanted, misunderstood, and displaced, we are always faced with loss that is gut wrenching and devastating to us. The precious souls that are with us are considered family and loved beyond belief. When we lose one of our many aging souls, we have to step back and try to reflect on what they did have versus those that failed them in the past. Such is the case with Buster. He chose to leave us this Memorial Day. He was 13 in January. Although we do everything possible, you just can’t fight age.

Dear Buster,

When I reflect on all the years you had with us, I just cannot believe that you are now no longer with us. Even in those golden years , your beautiful face escaped the warning signs of an aging old man. Your kindness and “go with the flow” mannerisms were ever present and I guess that your passing was in the manner. We could tell that you were content, happy to have the love that surrounded you, Happy to know where your next meal was coming from and happy to have your Dad(Don) be there for you in the end. I remember how you and Ethan loved to hang out together and I am sure that you are again reunited. I hope you knew how loved you were. Dad is struggling right now with your passing, knowing that he will no longer see that beautiful face, touch that luscious coat of yours and to just be with you. I believe that you will remain by his side to guide him through the grief. Run free big boy, and for now, so long, not forever but until……..

Bo update. It is with heavy heart that I share the passing of this precious boy. The humane Society contacted me today to give me details surrounding his passing because so many of our followers, including myself, fell in love with this boy. He was taken to the vets to begin the process of assessing him prior to much needed dental services and masses that he had. The lab results were not good but even more distressing was the fact that Bo began to show signs of distress and was not himself. It was discovered that he was bleeding internally. His age was not in his favor and undergoing a grueling surgery with little hope of success was not fair to this boy.

As a senior lover and as someone that has had to make these decisions, I know that it wasn’t easy. Unfortunately we cannot “love them back to health”. We had all hoped that he would recover but sometimes age and the wisdom of these fabulous dogs, have other plans. As hard as this decision is and was, I would have made the same decision, for Bo’s sake. It’s tough to say goodbye, even to a dog you have never touched.

Dear Bo,

Oh precious one. I never met you, I knew you from afar. Yet I felt I knew you, your kindness, character and stoic nature came through those pictures. In a very short period of time, you had many followers that were routing for you. But sadly, your tired body had other plans. Living to the age of 13 is quite impressive. Run free big boy and maybe at some point we will meet again. Goodbye for now…..not forever but until…..

As outlined in yesterday’s post, the Humane Society has responded to my inquiry. Here is the update verbatim.

“In consultation with our vets, we immediately started treating him for his obvious medical needs, and he's scheduled for further diagnostics. He has some major growths that need to be assessed and removed, a noticeable on-going skin problem, and he needs a comprehensive dental. Once we can be sure of all his medical needs, we will determine what we can care for now, and what an adopter would need to be able to manage for the rest of his life. Only then will we start talking to potential adopters. We have Adopter Information forms on file already, from folks who love the oldies, and we are directing people who have seen the posts to fill out forms and send them in for consideration. “

For anyone that has been lucky enough to have seniors know that the aging process affects each dog differently. They get lumps and bumps, allergies, motor issues, dental disease, etc. he is an “old man” and his issues will be dealt with methodically. As stated by the humane society above, if this old man touches your heart like he touches mine, get your application in to them.

I have sent a follow up inquiry to Central Vermont Humane Society to inquire about him. It would be incredible if someone from Central Vermont could take him in . I will sponsor his adoption fee to the potential adopter, if it is a suitable home. If his health issues are such that others may not be able to adequately care for him, Almost Home will take him in and care for him. As you all know, I love those seniors and special needs pooches and will care for him and love him for however long he has left. Please keep sharing him. When I hear from CVHS on his status, I will update everyone.

Well, I guess it’s a dog’s life, here anyway. This is an example of what they do after waking me up at 3AM EVERY day. They get to rest, and I get to do dog chores. Although Capone looks extremely comfortable, there is a part of me that just feels jealous that I can’t curl up there with him. Oh my not so little manic……spoiled maniac (they all deserve this peace and comfort)

I have updated this courtesy post with additional information on Ruby. Please contact Tony if you are able to give this sweet girl a forever home.

COURTESY POST!!!! This is not a dog that is with Almost Home. However, check her out!

This beauty is Ruby. She is 18 months old and because of a very dire home situation, the family is trying to do what is right for this precious girl. She is described as being sweet, and still full of puppy energy. Other than being fully crate trained, she lacks other basic training. She is still really a puppy….She needs a little patience and that valuable training coupled with her sweetness will make a fabulous pet. Did I say sweet???? She has had all of her shots but is not spayed. She weighs about 70 lbs. Tony who is trying to help find that perfect home for her is willing to help cover half the cost of her spay.

Update! Here is additional information. She is around children above the age of 8. Because she lacks training in basic obedience and has tons of puppy energy ( and they are unable to give her the exercise she needs) I would not recommend small children. She is around cats, however does not like one cat but just barks at the cat. She does not appear food aggressive. Ruby has not been around other dogs but with proper introductions, and a dog savvy person, who is willing to give her time and structure, she will make a great dog. She has not had much experience on a leash. Once she has some out time and has expelled some of that energy, she loves to cuddle on the sofa. She does not have a bite history but does get “ puppy mouthy” but when corrected appropriately, she does stop the behavior.

Again, she needs a home where she can get regular exercise, obedience training, structure and lots of love.

To meet Ruby or discuss her, please contact Tony at 802 585 4513. Did I say how sweet she is????? Please share.

Jaia Update! I wanted to take a second to update everyone on Jaia’s journey as she battled this awful bacteria over the last several months. As you may recall, we were horrified to think that Jaia would lose her front leg. Instead, Dr. Kelly wanted to try a more conservative approach first, continue on the aggressive antibiotics, daily wound treatment and honey. Thanks to Don and his daily dedication to the wound care protocol, the wound was beginning to show viable health tissue.. last Tuesday, Dr. Kelley performed surgery, doing debridement of the wound, and closure. Today, we were able to see the surgery results when Don could remove the bandage. What an amazing transformation! (I will post pictures below so you can see) she needs to have her stitches removed in 9 more days, continue to wear that dreaded cone for another 15 days and continue with antibiotics. She will also remain on her thyroid medications for life. To say we are relieved is an understatement. Our fears are subsiding. Jaia is doing so well and is happy, her energy has returned! Although we are still gathering donations for her surgery, we can finally sleep at night. Yay Jaia! And thank you Dr. Kelly!

Jaia update, sorry I haven’t posted an update on Jaia. The photo below is from this morning. Sometimes I think it looks the same as a couple of days ago. I shouldn’t be so impatient but I am. She started on her thyroid medication Friday, and hopefully that gets under control soon. Her antibiotics, pain medication and daily wound care continue. The vet continues to be updated as well. Please send positive thoughts!

Jaia update! We received the lab results today and feel lucky. I know, how is that possible with everything she is going through? Her thyroid issues can be treated with medication and thankfully it wasn’t the “ sick thyroid issue” where there would be additional tests required to figure out what the root cause is. Daily medication for her life will help her. Although this won’t solve all of her issues, it is a contributing factor. Repeat labs will be required in 6 weeks. She will slso be on the antibiotics for at least 6-8 weeks, also with follow up visits. Her pain medication also continues. I am sorry if these pictures are horrific to look at, but I see improvement as well! Dr. Kelly wants to see these pictures every other day as well. We need to attack this very aggressively. The other wounds are also aggressively being managed. Thank you everyone for caring and for the donations. Although we will always do whatever it takes to help these precious souls in our care, your donations help alleviate that stress. Many many thanks!

Jaia update, we have received an update on Jaia’s lab work. Everything is fine except for her thyroid numbers. (I have attached a copy of the letter from Dr. Kelly) We authorized him to do that next test in hopes that it may provide the necessary information on her health going forward. (The invoice for all labs are attached. I feel that it is important for you to know where your donations are going.)

Jaia got her wound care this morning as instructed. I may be looking at this picture with rose colored glasses, but it looks different to me today. Jaia is so patient and kind. Great job Don on the wound care! She looks so sad but keep fighting big girl!!!

02/14/2024

Jaia update! Jaia had her second opinion consult this morning. The early recommendation was amputation of her front leg. As devastating as this news was, we were trying to prepare for that, hence the 2nd opinion with the surgeon. MRSA is nothing to mess with and it has wreaked havoc on Jaia despite all of the antibiotics and care. She has been in that dreadful cone for 8 weeks, admittedly for her own good, but I am sure they don’t understand.

The surgeons assessment is as follows. He certainly was prepared for the amputation but advised against it at this time. After all, what happens if it spreads further, he would have no other options available once that leg was gone. Her infection is not yet controlled. Our course of action right now is to continue on the antibiotics that it is sensitive to, (one of which you cannot touch with bare hands but she has to injest). She also has to have aggressive wound care, where the wound is flushed daily with a special solution. Once that is done, her leg has to be wrapped but the wound is covered with honey, yes honey. Pictures of the wound has to be forwarded to the vet, every other day. Future appointments will be required. They also did additional blood work today to see if anything jumps out at them as another contributor to this infection. I remain so worried and concerned and pray that we see positive signs very soon.

I want to thank everyone that donated. We received $200. In good faith this money was sent by you for the more extensive services and because of that, I am happy to return the money if you so chose. I always want to be transparent. I am attaching a copy of the invoice from today’s visit.

Attached also is a picture of Jaia tonight (excuse the food in her cone). Normally Jaia is the happiest and most friendly dog on earth. She loves everyone and she has never met a dog that she doesn’t like. It’s tough to see her like this. Please keep her in your thoughts. And to our princess Jaia, fight baby!!!!

URGENT: Princess Jaia and Almost Home desperately need your help. She is one of our long term rescues who has struggled with various health concerns throughout the years. Her immune system is compromised which causes a host of issues. She has been battling this issue for the last 8 weeks which started with skin lesions. Many trips to the vets, multiple cultures and antibiotics have kept it slightly at bay but now the infection in her leg is out of control. The infection is now diagnosed as MRSA or MRSP and Jaia’s front leg requires amputation to control it. We are beside ourselves with worry. She is going to Stonecliff tomorrow morning for her consult and surgery to follow immediately. The estimate is 3,200-3,500.

We will keep you posted on her progress. If you can help with expenses, please donate to:

I want to recognize one of our most valued supporters. Ambir Moote has worked tirelessly for this rescue, Little Red Barn Sanctuary and many other animals in need. Yesterday at the annual Blue Cross Employee recognition program, Ambir won the Citizen of the year award in recognition of those efforts. She has done, and continues to do, so much that it’s hard to adequately thank her for those efforts. It is so deserved!

Also, Lizzard (formerly Lope) also won the Pet of the year. Ambir adopted him at the age of 6 from Almost Home. Lizzard is now 15 1/2 years old!!! He deserves to be the pet of the year and Ambir has given him his best life ever. We are so grateful for all she has given to him and all she has given to this rescue.
Congratulation Ambir and Lizzard!
