At our last composting workshop last weekend, composters Kelvin and Lindsay shared our new microscopes with some of our guests and volunteers! They just received training on microscopes at to be able to see into the world living under our feet. Lindsay says “We at BFS were able to secure an exciting grant from 11th Hour Racing and and to get microscopes along with careful lessons on how to use them. (Thank you John Duke.) Primarily to evaluate soil, worm teas and compost microbes. There is so much life going on in the soil that we tend to discount, pave over, step on, and never think about. It is another ocean beneath our feet which needs to be discovered and treated with care.” Photo: Kelvin Misiurski (center), Teddy Reiss and lanthe Reiss (under the hood) showing us her new learned discoveries!

BFS has a brand new Compost Educator!

Karen Griffith is hired by BFS as a part of the Pilot Composting Program in collaboration with , , and the town of . She is here to help educate our community on the hows and whys of composting!

We asked Karen what her favorite “aha!” moment is when people first understand how composting works? She says:
“I remember talking to a friend about composting, and she said she knew it was beneficial, but she didn’t really feel she would have much to compost because she was careful not to waste food. Then we started talking about all the inedible things that can be composted - apple cores, coffee grounds, melon rinds, tea leaves, onion skins, banana peels, etc. I could see her doing a mental inventory of her trash and realizing how much of what was in there actually could be composted, and her whole expression changed. If people do a waste inventory and really think about and record what they are throwing away and why, they almost always find it illuminating.”

Welcome, Karen! We are so excited to “up” our composting game even more!

We dug up the dahlia tubers today. 🥔🌸 We had a beautiful crop of dahlias this year. BFS compost and worm tea kept the dahlias healthy but this year they were planted with a generous handful of dried sugar kelp from Rhody Wild Sea Gardens.
Beautiful dahlias and tubers! Thanks to Bob, Wayne, Deb and Gail!

We have our last Composting Session THIS SATURDAY 11/15 on the farm from 2 to 4 PM. We will talk about how you can join the composting movement and we’ll be there to show you all the ropes! There are so many different ways that you can be involved in composting: whether it’s from your own home, your work, or contributing to your community’s efforts (like here at BFS). Let us help you find what method works best for you and your family/lifestyle!

See you Saturday! ;)

Why compost?
Methane is a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than CO2. According to the EPA, 58% of landfill methane emissions are caused by food waste! Composting food reduces those methane emissions by approximately 50%! That’s reason enough, right there.
We collect donated food scraps at the farm, Kent St, and the Peck Center. Join in the movement to decrease those methane emissions!

Join us this Wednesday 11/5 or (and!) Thursday 11/6 to help us plant garlic! Garlic is fun and simple to plant: we create small holes and drop the garlic cloves in and then we cover them up and tuck them in for the winter! They stay in the ground over the winter and will sprout next spring and will be ready for harvesting next summer. (the garlic scapes are ready a little sooner). This can be a fun and collaborative time together- or more independent and contemplative if you’d prefer! Park at the farm stand and find us in the field and we’ll get you started from there. 🧄
