The summer heat can be brutal! Keep your livestock healthy and hydrated with electrolytes, and other supplements to choose from!

Some great tips:
- For CHICKENS, freeze corn, watermelon, strawberries, cucumber, and peas in ice trays or bowls, and give on a hot day to help hydrate. You can also use Gatorade instead of water!
- For HORSES, mix in a scoop of sweet feed/senior feed in a bucket of cool water with electrolytes and watch them guzzle down their "sweet tea"! You can also supplement Electrolytes or regular salt to their daily grain.
-For CATTLE, Put loose mineral and loose salt(salt blocks work as well) out to encourage drinking.
- For SHEEP and GOATS, Provide ice blocks in their water to keep it cool, keep water fresh. *Avoid hosing them off, as their hair/wool works to keep them cool, and being soaked in water can make them more prone to pneumonia*

Are you prepared for the hurricane season with livestock? Here are some tips to get you ready!

HORSES
- Current photos of every horse, as well as UTD Tetanus and West Nile vaccine
- Plenty of food and water buckets
- 3 days of feed stocked up in the events you are unable to get more
- Mark your horse/s with contact information in the events of getting loose with livestock markers or waterproof tags tied in the mane or base of the tail
- Cooler with ice for refrigerated medications
- Emergency first aid kit containing vet wrap, scissors(or a sharp knife), gauze, wound spray, saline, fly spray, and electrolytes
- Easy access to halters and lead ropes
- Wire cutters in the events of entanglement

CATTLE
- Turn cattle loose in a large area with access to high ground
- Keep feed and hay covered and secured

GOATS AND SHEEP
- leave in a preselected area(out of the rain) appropriate for disaster type
- If access to shelter, make sure it is stable enough to withstand heavy wind and rain
- 2-3 days of access to hay, as well as 3 days worth of feed stored
- Use breakaway collars with tags for contact information in the events of getting loose
- UTD vaccines and health papers

POULTRY
- Secure coop with thick wires or ground rods to prevent moving/shifting from heavy wind
- Store feed above ground in a cool, dry area
- Provide perching and roosting area above ground in case of flooding
- Stockpile enough water for the flock; one gallon per chicken is a good rule of thumb
- Keep electrolytes, wound care, styptic powder, and Corid on hand
- Keep plenty of food available for the duration of the storm, and store it high enough in case of flooding
* With young chickens, be prepared to bring them inside underneath a heat lamp if they get wet*
