This is a wonderful article explaining the importance of learning all aspects of horsemanship and why it’s important to challenge yourself in riding different horses.

Make Them Carry Their Saddle

A father of a darling girl and I were talking last week and he said that he wanted his daughter to ride more and not have to do the work part of the catching, grooming, and saddling. I smiled as I explained.

Riding horses is a combination of strength, timing, and balance. Kids in this country are physically weak (unless they are actively involved with weight training and physical conditioning 4+ times a week.)

When you walk out to the field, you are clearing your stress from being under fluorescent lights all day; feeling the sun soak into your bones. As your body moves on uneven surfaces, it strengthens your legs and core.

When you groom your horse (especially currying), you are toning your arms and stabilizing your core.

When you carry your saddle, your arms, chest, and back are doing isolated strengthening work.

Being near horses, calms and makes you tune into the splendor of these empathetic animals.

When you ride at a posting trot, it’s equivalent to a slow jog calorie burn wise.

After a lesson, the riders are physically tired and mentally quiet and balanced.

Horses feel your heart beat and mirror your emotions back.

Riding large and somewhat unpredictable animals makes you resilient and pushes your expectations.

Working with horses is so much more than learning how to ride.

So parents, make your children carry their saddles. Don’t do the hard parts for them, as long term it actually hurts them. To advance with their riding, they must get stronger. You can help by doing the high parts.

I love having you all at the farm, and am so grateful to get to share these fascinating animals with you.

RWR is making memories at our summer camps. This group was full of energy and ready to go. Our campers learned about proper horse care and participated in barn chores. There were crafts, tie dye shirts and our kids practiced their horsemanship skills, with a chance to earn ribbons.

Rockin W Ranch and A Heart for HEROs are looking for a couple ponies to fill the gap Bo left. Between the Tiny Trotters class and camp beginners, we’re currently looking for two ponies: one around 10-11 hands and another around 12-13 hands. We need ponies that are quiet and calm and forgiving. If you can assist us with our search, please call or leave a text message at 863-205-1494. We are willing to purchase but tax deductible Donations can be made through A Heart for HEROs. We could also use a 15 hand western pleasure horse for beginners and Special Olympians. Please share this as well.

Today Bojangles Spirit crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He came to Rockin W Ranch 23 years ago as a scrawny 2 year old with a couple of interesting pony habits that did not especially endear him to his young riders at first. However, all the riders who took Bo as their 4H project, learned the importance of focus and clear, consistent aids. Because he would not give them a "free" ride, they learned good horsemanship skills and became impressive riders.

Throughout his life's work as a lesson pony, Bo taught many life lessons not the least of which were perseverance and patience. He was proficient in both western pleasure and English IF the rider made it happen. He qualified for the State 4-H Show every year he was a project horse. Bo taught hundreds of children to ride and many were inspired to go on to greater horsemanship skills.

Bo will certainly be missed at Rockin W Ranch. He was one of our primary lesson horses for beginners and helped many young riders on their equestrian journey. His last outing was the Day Without Disabilities at the Bunch Ranch.

The greatest gift you could give Bo, is to help us find a pony to take over his duties. And that's pretty big horseshoes to fill!!
